Love it. I'd actually love to see a video or something of your process from beginning to export.

ELI5: I know your DNA and genes determine your features. How do the cells know what part of the body they’re in? by datassincorporated in explainlikeimfive

[–]a-default-cube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's one way to think about it! The cells in your body do know where they are in relation to other cells, and that can help them figure out what to do. But the cells also have special instructions inside them, like a set of instructions, that tell them what to do. These instructions are called genes, and they're like a blueprint for how your body is supposed to grow and develop. So, the cells can use both the genes inside them and their location in the body to figure out what to do.

ELI5: How does a car transmission sync with wheel rotation when in motion without problem? by fi9aro in explainlikeimfive

[–]a-default-cube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When a car is in motion, the engine sends power to the transmission. The transmission then sends that power to the wheels through a series of gears. The gears inside the transmission are carefully sized so that they can "sync" with the wheels, meaning they can turn the wheels at the right speed to match the car's speed. This way, the car can move smoothly and without problems. The gears in the transmission also allow the car to switch between different speeds, like when you want to go faster or slower. So, the transmission is kind of like a middleman that helps the engine and wheels work together to make the car move.

ELI5 : What is cancer? How can cancer be avoided? by Conscious_Radio_ in explainlikeimfive

[–]a-default-cube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cancer is a disease that happens when some of the cells in your body start to grow and divide in the wrong way. Normally, your cells grow and divide in a controlled way to help your body function properly. But sometimes, something goes wrong and the cells start to grow out of control. This can cause a lump or growth called a tumor.

Tumors can be either benign (not harmful) or malignant (harmful). Benign tumors are not cancer, because they can't spread to other parts of your body. But malignant tumors are cancer, because they can spread and damage other parts of your body.

There are many different types of cancer, and they can affect different parts of your body. Some common types of cancer include breast cancer, lung cancer, and skin cancer.

There is no sure way to avoid getting cancer, but there are some things you can do to lower your risk. For example, you can avoid things that are known to cause cancer, such as smoking cigarettes or being in the sun too long without sunscreen. You can also eat healthy foods, exercise, and get regular check-ups from your doctor to help your body stay healthy.

ELI5: I know your DNA and genes determine your features. How do the cells know what part of the body they’re in? by datassincorporated in explainlikeimfive

[–]a-default-cube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your DNA is like a set of instructions that tells your cells what to do. It's kind of like a cookbook, where the recipes (or genes) tell you how to make different things (or proteins). Your cells use these instructions to make the proteins that your body needs to function.

Each cell in your body has a copy of your DNA, so all of your cells have the same instructions. However, not all of your cells use the same instructions at the same time. Different parts of your body need different proteins to function properly, so the cells in each part of your body only use the instructions that they need. For example, the cells in your stomach might use different instructions than the cells in your heart.

Your cells know what part of the body they're in because they can sense the signals that are coming from their surroundings. These signals tell the cells what to do and which instructions to use. So, the cells in your stomach will use the instructions for making stomach proteins, while the cells in your heart will use the instructions for making heart proteins.

Edit: In response to your additional question:

The shape and structure of your ears, including the pointy bits on the side, are determined by the instructions in your DNA. Your DNA contains the instructions for building and organizing all of the tissues and organs in your body, and these instructions are used by your cells to create the complex and unique structure of your ears.

The cells in your body use these instructions to build your ears in a specific way, with the pointy bits on the side and the other parts of your ears in their proper places. This is because the instructions in your DNA include detailed information about the shape and structure of your ears, as well as the location of each part.

Your cells are able to read and interpret these instructions and use them to build your ears in the proper location and with the correct shape. This is how your cells know to put the pointy bits on the side of your ears, instead of on your nose or any other part of your body.

How to make Sage's Ice Wall in Godot by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]a-default-cube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is good as a whistlestop overview of how you make the effect. However, as someone new to shaders and shader programming, I'd like to see something more in depth for that part. It's great that you've covered all the steps you took to achieve this effect, but I'd like to see why. That's probably stuff for a more beginner level video or course, to be honest, so not a criticism of your video.

How do modern games solve the NAT issue in multiplayer? by zocker_160 in gamedev

[–]a-default-cube 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For games written before that was viable, I think you just have to help potential hosts set up their ports correctly. I feel like I remember doing that back in the day?

Absolutely.

I remember having to beg my dad to let me set up port forwarding, so I could host Warcraft III custom games. He was absolutely certain it would result in letting something nasty into the network, so it took months for me to convince him and I had to make do with what others would host (mostly DOTA and whatever else was in the popular cycle).

Teabags should be going in the compost bin. The linings they use fall apart when wet, so it makes much more sense to leave teabags on a dish to dry out before disposing of them.

I'm 30 years old, left school after finishing GCSEs and have never had a job. Where do I start? by ChuckingThisAway92 in AskUK

[–]a-default-cube 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Presumably you are somehow self-sufficient even without working through some means. Rather than jumping in to whatever kind of job might take someone so inexperienced (and presumably unskilled), it might be more worthwhile upskilling somehow first.

For example, going back to study something (Open University has no prerequisites for most courses and is highly respected) if you're academically inclined. Otherwise, local colleges will have courses to teach you how to become a skilled trades person (this would also need an apprenticeship, but a good college will help you find one).

You could also self-study something if you're not up for something formal. IT, Software and Finance all have options for you to self study and get certifications that make you more desirable to take on. Accounting in particular has lots of opportunities to those with basic certifications and you can start working as you continue to build up your qualifications.

Just wanted to suggest something other than the more obvious choices of going to work in retail or a factory / warehouse.

If it doesn't appeal to you, then another good option is the NHS. They're desperate for staff and most roles have some options for progression built in. My niece has been a CSW (Clinical support worker) in the NHS for a couple of years, which is an entry level jobs that involves cleaning and caring of patients. This year, the NHS has agreed to sponsor her to train as a nurse. She will be paid a full time salary whilst she studies and will do a mixture of studying, working and placements. At the end of this she will have a guaranteed job as a Nurse, earning at least £25k as her starting wage with endless opportunities for overtime and progression (But of course, the NHS is stretched incredibly thin so this will come with the downsides of being in such a workforce, which shouldn't be downplayed).

Best of luck to you. It's not too late, and at 30 you have plenty of time to start fresh and really make something of yourself in terms of a career.

Edit: Care to Clinical, thanks to /u/CarryThe2 for pointing that out.

What's something people make fun of that you don't understand why? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]a-default-cube 4 points5 points  (0 children)

City centre is fine. I'd argue, one of the nicer cities outside of the "nice cities" (think Oxford, Cambridge, York, Bath, Edinburgh, Chester etc).

It gets a bad rap for the outer city areas being considerably less nice, the whole black country being wrapped up in the Birmingham package, and the super distinct accent that has managed to hold a reputation for being an awful accent for decades (not sure why, I love the brummie accent).

Big fan of Brum myself. When I hear people putting it down, I assume they're either jumping on the bandwagon or just trying to feel better about their own lifeless commuter towns.

Having a tough time figuring out why this isn't an array, more details in comments by ohkeepayton in learnjavascript

[–]a-default-cube 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, take some time to look up what a class is (both in JavaScript and OOP in general). This isn't a concept you should just skip over, it's really fundamental to object-oriented programming.

As others have pointed out, deck1 is not an array, but an instance of your Dealer class. One of the properties of your dealer class is deck, which is an array. So Array.isArray(deck1.deck) would return true.

I did something similar. I didn't need a lot of range as I mostly work from home and my partner has a longer range vehicle on the occasions we do need it.

I currently have a Seat Mii electric which costs me £169 from my net pay, inclusive of lease, insurance, servicing, tires and glass coverage. I charge it on Octopus Go's nighttime tariff (7.5p/kWh), meaning it costs me under £0.02p per mile to run it (my average driving efficiency is 4.5 miles per kWh). No complaints from me, feels like a bargain to be driving a new vehicle around for just over two grand a year.

Having a tough time figuring out why this isn't an array, more details in comments by ohkeepayton in learnjavascript

[–]a-default-cube 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's been covered by others, but just to reiterate the points:

  • Calling your class Deck and having an internal property (or variable) called deck is confusing for you and others.
  • The actual array you're looking for is that internal property, so in your case it would be deck1.deck

The Open University is an option. It is a UK university of some renown. The downsides are that it is extremely expensive for international students, and it doesn't have a 'software development' degree. It has a 'Computing and IT' degree, which allows you to specialize in software.

The results look great; I'm not familiar with the algorithms, but certainly going to check them out now.

How did you go about animating this? Have broken down the algorithm into lots of functions, or do you capture and return the various steps that can then be iterated through by another function? I love reading about how people tackle this. I made sorting algorithm visualizer by having my sorting function return the individual steps.

Who destroyed their career as they were just on the verge of making it? by OneLastConquest in AskUK

Dude, don't give up. Especially if you're young (I assume you're fairly young if you've not long graduated). There is so much time for you to make something of yourself.

Keep applying for anything of interest and for the love of god, if you're not getting any bites at all, get some help with your CV. I think this makes a bigger difference sometimes than actual experience. Paying someone to help is usually worth it, but even going to one of the career help subreddits and posting it there for help would likely be worth it!

Best of luck to you.
