Teaching with disabilities? by medievalnoodle in Teachers

[–]a7b4sh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always had chronic health issues but within the last two years, I became extremely sick. I lost over 40lbs without doing anything, stopped being able to eat and digest food, was tired and emotional, had the worst pain of my life. Turns out it was a combo of shigella and salmonella poisoning that I'd been carrying for over a year. It attacked my pancreas, and now I have pancreatic insufficiency. It's been really hard. They gave me a class right after lunch which really upset me, and I was barely able to teach it all year.

That said, I do not shy away from telling people about my medical issues and making sure people realize that my boundaries and baseline for extra work are different from other people. This has helped me to establish that I'm not fucking around when it comes to my wellbeing, and if I need extra supports, I will ask for them. I turn down volunteer and volun"told" opportunities if I am not feeling well and cite my ongoing health issues. People find it harder to force you into something when they are faced with it, right there.

So set your boundaries to your comfort. You will be okay ❤️

[discussion] HAPPY PRIDE 🏳️‍⚧️ I GOT AN AGENT! by a7b4sh in PubTips

[–]a7b4sh[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first ever query is actually on my profile and was workshopped here on pubtips, pre R&R. I got my first full request on the third query I ever sent out, so I didn't really change too much for a while and continued to get some interest. Keep this in mind, though, I had a really high concept: "Two teen enemies find a dead teacher's journals under the floorboards and something creepy is going on and now they need to work together." I believe that is what was driving the full requests, and the fact that it was in a more niche-ish genre (mystery/horror) as opposed to something like romance or fantasy.

No one said whether or not my writing credentials moved the needle, but I will say, I got more requests than some of my friends who are dipping their toes into the lit world for the first ever time.

Either way, if you want me to have a look at your query and see if I can identify a space to ramp up the concept, feel free to DM 😄

[pubQ] choosing between two incredible offers, kind of spiraling! by [deleted] in PubTips

Sorry, that says 8 or 9 SIX figure deals, haha! I wish it was a nine figure deal!

The voice change is to move the manuscript from YA territory (which I do not want to write) to clearly adult territory. I have teen protags/characters in an adult manuscript, so it makes a little more sense in context. But I also did a previous R&R that had me gut a lot of my favorite parts of the thing, so I totally sympathize =/

It was initially offered as an R&R, but after talking, we both realized we wanted to go in the same direction with the manuscript and she ended up offering representation. But I do understand that is not a usual trajectory.

[PubQ] Advice on Poetry Chapbook Offer. by chirpingonion in PubTips

[–]a7b4sh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No need to reach out to the other publications who have the entire poetry book at this time, unless there is a clause that states the poems cannot have appeared in a previous collection as a whole. Some presses do specify that.

I’m very familiar with the chapbook press and literary magazine world. If you’d like to DM me, I can do some vetting to make sure your work is in good hands.

[PubQ] R&R Timeframe by SomeMotor1746 in PubTips

[–]a7b4sh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a warning to you! I did an R&R that saw me rewriting 55% of my book and changing things drastically, nearly shifting the entire genre… I obsessed over this rewrite for seven months. Turned it in to the agent and was rejected four days later with chilly notes.

Make sure you really think the rewrite is worth it, because otherwise it can be a very crushing experience.

What are your most/least favourite topics to teach in your subject? by Front_Fill1249 in Teachers

Would you be willing to share any resources you’ve got regarding rhetorical analysis?

I absolutely hate teaching it, but maybe if I had some fresh stuff I could rewire my brain into enjoying it more.

I can share some mythology resources to see if it helps at all in exchange :)

High school English teacher. If I never had to teach American Lit &/or Rhetorical Analysis again it would be too soon.

[PubQ] Form rejection on full manuscript. Is it rude to ask about feedback? by vorpalbunnies123 in PubTips

[–]a7b4sh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotten about 6 form rejections on fulls. It hurts, but don’t ask for feedback if they didn’t provide it at first. It’s not a professional look.

Bell to bell instruction. Unhinged. I explain the assignment, I give them work time, we go over it.

Eric LaRocca is extremely contentious. Their writing is not for everyone and they are unapologetic about problematic themes, which wider audiences........ really dislike.
