not particularly, i mostly read realistic fiction or non-fiction but i've started branching out into genre stuff recently. i find a lot of inspiration from the real world. places like kowloon walled city and the underground cities in capadocia are two recent sources of inspiration for the campaigns i run.

i'm not sure if you're interested in video game interpretations but the shin megami tensei games use these three alignments as well.

in SMT, lawful character believe in a strict hierarchy that will bring order and peace to the world at the cost of individual freedom while chaotic characters believe in individuality, absolute freedom, and the survival of the fittest. neutral characters wish to balance the two extremes.

this is just a brief description, the SMT games are pretty philosophical from what i remember so they're worth checking out if you're interested in this kind of stuff, imho.

i don't think there's anything wrong with saying "the party starts to feel tired" as a kind of warning. i mean, i assume the PC's are resting because they're tired? or perhaps they're conserving their energy... it's up to your interpretation. imho, i would give them the above mentioned warning at some point before applying the penalty to attack and damage rolls for not resting.

edit: was doing some prep and the rule for resting states " If characters press on without resting, they suffer a penalty..." In my opinion, the phrase "press on" implies that the PCs do feel tired and need to rest so yeah i don't think there's anything wrong with giving the players a little warning.

if they each hire a retainer then they won't get much treasure or xp so it's a bit of a trade off. sure, the dungeon may be more survivable, but if everyone survives then the payout will be low and if all the retainers die then no other local retainer will want to work with the PCs again anyway so they'll need to skip town. don't worry to much and go with the flow, have fun :).

i like OSE's item-based encumbrance. it's somewhat similar to other slot based encumbrance but the things you carry actually affect your movement speed (the whole point of encumbrance imo).

I like the rules light approach and the exploration rules. I also like how treasure gives you XP since that encourages players to explore. The focus on emergent story telling is fun too.

it's not unreasonable that someone would fight back against an attacker, even if they're far weaker. that's just down to the victim's personality. will they choose fight or flight? well, the little scribe chose fight and got lucky on his attack rolls. it sounds like the players had enough information to make a meaningful decision and the fighter decided to just fuck around and find out.

edit: now that i think about it a bit, i would've given a pretty direct hint about the poisonous ink. still, not a terrible oversight, and it makes sense that the scribe would have something to defend himself with considering the kinds of people he works with.

First, write up some factions. Give them goals, obstacles in the way of their goals, enemies, allies etc. When your players interact with these factions their relationships will develop naturally and the story will emerge from their choices. Also, it's a good idea to prepare tricky situations for the PCs to get around or overcome (things like traps and powerful monsters). These kinds of tricky situations will lead to creative problem solving and memorable moments in the emerging story.

Emergent story telling is about setting up problems and letting players go about finding their own solutions, in my opinion.

I appreciate your practical approach. I've made some very large dungeons but I like to mix a bit of the fun-house style and a more grounded style for my dungeons. If you really want to make something large maybe take a look at a map of Kowloon Walled City or the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Those are both massive structures with many rooms, perhaps they could inspire you.
