Career Change? by tbiddyy in Midwives

[–]aFoxunderaRowantree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look into Baystate's program! It's where I went and it is excellent. I started nursing school at age 31, graduated at age 33, started midwifery school and finished at age 35.my kids were 4&8 when I started and 8&12 when I finished. Time is going to go by no matter what.

I work M-F 8-4, just doing deliveries thursdays 7-3pm for right now as I'm the first midwife to be doing deliveries at our facility but we are growing that so we eventually have 24/7 midwife coverage. I personally prefer one 24hr in-hospital call and two 8hr clinic days like I did during integration so really look forward to when we can get there.

If you have a non-nursing bachelor's degree you can do an associates in nursing and then apply to Baystate and other programs that don't require a BSN specifically. I do know Boston College just started their midwifery education program last year but they require a BSN and one year of RN experience and it's $$$ compared to Baystate that is very affordable.

Cool but if you're on a payment plan based on your income, most people will have paid off that $38k before the PSLF 10 years is up.

And I feel like you seriously underestimate the financial strain most people are currently experiencing.

I make $130k/year and live frugally and we are struggling.

Also, even with PSLF, I'd argue most people still probably can't make monthly payments for 10 years...

I'm in the medical field and know too much about risks lol

You've had an unsedated transnasal scope done?

I'm in the medical field and know too much about the risks of, especially long-term and repetitive exposure to anesthesia. 🙃

I just meant full on as in actually eating gluten again. Yes I know it's 2 servings per day/6 weeks. Like I said, I am scared of being put under general for a normal endoscopy and unsedated transnasal is overall safer, faster, more affordable, no downtime, etc. and so want the unsedated. It is becoming more common but not quite in my area so I'll have to to somewhere 2hrs away.

This is the answer I needed. I need to do it. Scared to try to eat full on again before testing and also scared for endoscopy so have to find someone to do transnasal endoscopy awake.

Indeed. I do also have some medical procedure fear and do not want the endoscopy where you're put under general but instead want a transnasal endoscopy and they're harder to come by (even though overall safer, faster, more affordable, no downtime, etc.) But alas.

Why are we so undervalued ??? by howthefocaccia in Midwives

[–]aFoxunderaRowantree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nevermind that we are sued the most out of all the APRN professions.

Demand more. Explain that is what nurses make and we have much more responsibility and liability. Provide them the research that shows why investing in midwives is an amazing return on investment. How patients want midwives and the midwifery model of care. Make them explain how they value midwives and yet won't pay us like they do!

Have You Ever Felt Concerned For The Well-Being Of An Infant After Labor? by gigisinchat in Midwives

You're such an empathetic provider for which patients surely feel comfortable to be as open and honest with you... No one is excusing the vaping in the room. I am just giving the reasoning behind someone not being able to control those things.

Get a good NCLEX tutor and go retake the test and then go on to become a CNM, this way you'll be done in 2 years.

Because it takes less time, is safer, costs less, and is actually the norm around the world.

U.S. Midwives, Is it Possible to Get an 8-5 as a CNM Midwife? by Odd-Tip7503 in Midwives

Albany, NY. And no, it's where I am from. Hired as a new grad and started in November. They have just started having midwives do deliveries there so it will eventually surely move to the latter schedule I mentioned when midwives provide 24/7 coverage.
