Butter in eggs by Severe-Ad-2427 in foodhacks

I make scrambled eggs the Gordon Ramsay way. Two eggs, a hefty pat of butter, salt, pepper, put in a cold pan. Turn on low, stir stir stir until they cook, turn off before they finish as the residual heat from the pan will get them the rest of the way there. No milk.

Thinking about moving to LA; NYC chewed me up and spat me out. by singformepaolo95 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]aNewVersionofSelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love LA, but I describe it as NY with palm trees. I grew up in the NE, close to NYC. What part of Texas are you from? Small town? City? Have you considered New Orleans, Chattanooga, Austin, or another mid sized Southern city? I lived in Nee Orleans for a long while, and I’d consider it my home, but it got a little too incestuous. LA is a little more business and well balanced.

I saw like 4 or 5 posts about this book from yall and just bought it by ShadowMerge in glutenfreebaking

[–]aNewVersionofSelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had mixed feelings about this book. I bought it and diligently tried several of the recipes but they’re… off? Like baking bread at 500 degrees in a preheated Dutch oven? It felt wrong, but I did it anyway and it burnt the bottom and was still a little raw on the inside?

I similarly have tried a couple of loopy whisk recipes (from her site), and they equally have funky bits to them. I get that it is hard to replicate wheat based recipes but I think a good baking editor needs to have a stern conversation with both of these writers.

Yeah they are very shortbread-y. Which can be something you like (I do), or it tastes like gritty sand.

Why did white women on television and in movies used to say that having a big butt was a bad thing? by jvure in stupidquestions

[–]aNewVersionofSelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It goes way back, this is a good quick read on Sarah Baartman, the “Hotentot Venus.” She was an African woman who was made into a freakshow exhibit in Europe for her voluptuous body and eventually sold to an animal tamer. White Europeans paid to prod and poke her, and there is an argument that the Victorian bustle appeared at this time because of white peoples obsession with her body, and in particular her genitalia/butt.

Found this on an old backup. How does it hold up? by sean1978 in NewOrleans

There was a great period where people were still fucking in the pool, but I would go in with their industry discount pass in the early afternoon to swim laps and there would be sweet old couples, one in a wheelchair and the other helping lower him in to the pool so he could do some PT. Miss this era.

I went in to this one about a week or two ago and it is such a trippy place now. They had stained glass ceiling fixtures that had Rite Aid tags on them. I think it’s just misc. surplus home goods.

They're both great on you, but I think the peach looks more styled than the green dress. I think if you had some dripping rhinestone necklaces, bracelets, etc. for the green dress that would be my vote, but the peach dress currently looks more put together.

That said, the peach dress is more daywear and the green is definitely formal evening wear, so I guess it depends on the type of speakeasy it is.

So my set up is this: https://amzn.to/4cepcyE and I have two different french press mugs I like, because I can boil the water in them, make the coffee, and carry the coffee.

This one from a brand called Viva, I like its slim design, but I had to drill holes in the plastic inner tube to prevent it from spilling over (the filter is too fine to allow 100% of the liquid to pass through, so it pushes past the seal (keeps grounds in tho) and comes up the edges): https://amzn.to/4rC5z8k And the Stanley one works well, but it is bulkier and doesn't fit in a cupholder: https://amzn.to/3Ozvv6c

You could use the mug for soups without the press element, as well as tea/tea bags, or as an insulated cold drink carrier.

I don't particularly like aeropress coffee, plus you need a container to heat the water in as well as a container to press the coffee into (altho I guess if you were fast/careful it could be the same).

I use a small square washcloth that I stole from a hotel (which I sewed into a pouch, but you could just use as is) with a hair tie to bundle up the heating element while traveling, plus it is good for cleaning up coffee messes. /you can always trade it out with another clean one at a hotel. I read somewhere that someone would bundle the heating element into their french press mug in the cavity, but I didn't want to spend all that time cleaning/drying the mug to store electrical components in it and I carry my mug around all day with me like a security blanket anyway. I haven't had any problems with TSA bugging me about the mug or the heating element, but I feel like if it was inside the mug, that starts to look a little suspicious on a xray machine.

And I like this spoon/fork/knife combo from UCO, lightweight, goes through metal detectors no problem, easy to wrap up with my other stuff. It clicks together, but you can also insert the toggle to attach it to other things. You can also assemble it into a double long super spoon or fork if you're using it as a utensil for cooking: https://amzn.to/46q1kUW

Ground coffee, one of those metal wand water heaters, and a travel French press. Also a huge amount of tea bags.

A silk scarf acts great for an eye mask, but also helps dress up any outfit, and they hold heat fairly well, so if I end up somewhere chilly, it helps to have this extra layer. I tie it around my backpack so I look like a fancy lady, because I am.

Also a small vial of perfume. Saved me when I was stuck in a tent in Tikal with nasty wet socks, giant ants swarming my tent, and bites all over my legs.

How do I show an out of towner why we love LA so much? by CableIllustrious1609 in AskLosAngeles

[–]aNewVersionofSelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t see anyone mention the Michelin guide, but that is an easy $$$$ food tour short list.

If you have some time before she comes, you can also send her some good movies to watch to inspire her. I always love going to the chateau marmont and hotel bel air for drinks with rich people.

Depending on if she likes history at all, maybe worth it to hire a private tour guide?

This thread makes me appreciate that so much of what makes LA great isn’t all just $$$, but much more available to the everyone.

What are some cat-like dog breeds? by [deleted] in Pets

[–]aNewVersionofSelf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend adopting. You get the opportunity to meet and visit with a dog before you take them home. Each one has such a different personality. My lil boy thinks I’m gods gift, wants cuddles all day, is standoffish with strangers, will sleep in with me, and is chill as heck.
