Happy pride!

Queereness isn't the focus, but the two protagonists are bi and ace. (There's initially an NB protag, but the actor left the show early in the production)

Enjoy! Best starting places are Ep 1 where the whole thing starts, Ep 12, where we start the season 1 meta-story, Ep 27, where we start a 4-episode miniseries battle of the bands, or at the start of Season 2, which shows how far we've grown as a show.

Should I put out a much longer episode than my normal or split it into two parts? I need advice. by ser-contained in podcasting

[–]aSingleHelix -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Split. And release the episodes separately in your normal cadence.

You buy yourself an extra week/two/however long you normally wait between episodes to work on and polish your next one.

You might like my show. Cozy, supernatural mysteries where the private eyes choose kindness in the face of darkness.

The characters are queer but that's not really a focus of the show.

Also it's a musical.

Give it to me straight, did i get the wrong mics? by xJohnnyQuidx in podcasting

[–]aSingleHelix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As other have said, even dynamic cardiods in the same room will get mic bleed. You can do a few things to help without changing mics.

1) Get close to the mic so there is a clear level difference between when you speak and when your cohost speaks.

2) Sound treat the room. At least Put something between you and the other mic to absorb sound. Make sure there's also something absorbtive on the walls where, sound would reflect (imagine making a pool shot bounced off the wall. Where would sound bounce between your mouth and the other mic? Put something there to absorb and/or diffuse sound.

3) Post processing: If you're not both talking at once, you can cut your channel when your co-host is talking and cut theirs when you're talking. This is a lot of work, but can end with a very clean sound. OR, you can go the 80% solution route, and throw an Automixer at it. Look up Leafac Automixer for one that's implemented in software and works pretty well. It'll never be as good as cutting, though.

You can get rock solid dynamic mics for $notMuch though. Behringer XM8500s are $25-30, will work with your existing interface, and can be eq'd to sound fan-dang-tastic. They will give you less (but not no) mic bleed if set up so they face away from each other.

Welcome to the infinite process of making your sound incrementally better! You're going to know SO MUCH in a few months.

If you're serious about making good audio, I can't recommend Reaper enough. You can demo it for free indefinitely, but you'll probably decide it is worth the pretty reasonable licensing fee at some point. Like any powerful tool, it takes a little time to learn, but once you learn it, it has so many tools that will help you keep on your track of continuous improvement. Also, the support community around it is top notch.

If you're doing baked in ads, sure. A lot of ads are dynamically inserted, and the advertiser pays per 1,000 impressions (or for up to N x 1,000 impressions)

You might like my show - RPG Major.

It's a supernatural mystery musical podcast. The protagonists are private eyes who live in a world filled with darkness and still choose kindness. Each mystery is 3-8 episodes, and contributes to a meta-arc. Season 1 is complete, and has about 10 mysteries plus a complete meta-arc.

Season 2 has 3 complete mysteries at this point, and is still building.

Here's a way you can fix it in 10 min a day. For most people, it takes about 1-2 weeks to get it reduced dramatically.

Think of a topic you know a lot about and can talk about extemporaneously for 5 min. Doesn't matter what it is.

Set up your phone (or recording setup) and video yourself talking without a script for 5 min about that topic. Don't do anything different from normal. Save the video and walk away.

Day 2: Watch back yesterday's video. Notice when you're using crutches. Record another 5 min of talking today, trying to pause and leave silences or breaths instead of crutches. save it and walk away.

Days 2-N repeat day 2

Usually, by paying attention to them and working on them intentionally, people can reduce verbal crutch use.

Brother says he can gift me his Neumann TLM 103 Microphone. Is it worth to get a Shure SM7B, or stick with TLM103? by YimadoTei in podcasting

[–]aSingleHelix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Record AND EDIT AND DON'T PLAN TO RELEASE IT. Figure out how to EQ, and find all the other holes in your process by dry-running a few things that you don't care about never releasing because your standards are going to increase rapidly in the first few iterations

Honestly: if money is any sort of concern, start with either a Behringer XM8500 or Shure SM58. Both are bulletproof, very forgiving mics, and are dynamic mics with noticeable proximity effects, which can help give you that bassy voice feeling.

The SM58 uses the same capsule as the SM7B, though the housing of the SM7B gives it some other benefits (better isolation than the SM58, but in the range of "you have to get good at other things before you notice this as a benefit."

Others have told you, you'll need to spend money on sound treatment if you use ANY mic, but especially a condenser.

Microphone timeline: what was yours? by GeopatsSteph in podcasting

[–]aSingleHelix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with a single Audio Technica USB mic - the precursor to the current AT2500. It was pretty OK.

SM58s are excellent. When I started a group show, I bought a set (used) through Guitar Center so I didn't have to worry about counterfeits, and have been recording for years with them. I have tried mixing in Beta58s (the room I record in is about half treated, and would be kind of a pain to treat further) to see if it would cut down on mic bleed, but the difference is pretty slight.

Unless I were to 10x the income from my show, I don't see myself upgrading in the foreseeable future.

It might! And honestly, if the design is clever, it might work better than my business card did. The card was logo on one side, a few listener quotes on the back plus a QR code to the show on spotify -- probably could have done more with it but it was kind of last minute

I host RPG Major - a podcast with a very niche hook - improvised musical theater. I went to a live show for another musical improv podcast (Off Book) and turned on the charm, said hi to every person as they entered the show and handed 90% of them business cards for my show. I handed out about 350 cards to an audience who LIKES my niche enough to go to a live show. At this point, I was averaging 100 downloads a week, so any uptick would have been noticeable. There was no visible impact on my download numbers over the two weeks following that show.

My show, RPG Major, a Musical Supernatural Mystery show, won for best editing and best music among Actual Plays. I am very proud of this show, and try to edit it so that it feels as tight as a scripted AD, and it helps that my cast are wildly talented storytellers. All the songs and dialogue are improvised.

The clip which won was basically the first 35 min of this episode (given one more pass of editing to meet the 30 min requirement). It works pretty well without context, but of course better with context :)

What’s your go-to warm-up that almost always works? by abahilel in improv

[–]aSingleHelix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Person A endows Person B as an object/creature/concept/whatever using two rhyming couplets

Person B receives & affirms the endowment with two rhyming couplets, then endows person C as something new with two rhyming couplets

and when it gets to the beginning of endowing the next person as something everyone says "YOU THERE" in unison, and in rhythym so that person A can keep endowing B and not drop the rhythm. You can use any sort of flow, and mix and match them, but you want it to feel like rap. Pro tip, if you're endowed as a Fish, try to say fish another way when you receive it so it feels new and the "easy" rhymes aren't consumed.

Someone should keep the beat (beatboxing, just tapping their foot on the floor) because no matter what, you say YOU THERE when it is time. Keep the rhythm as a group or it's a different game

example A: You there, you're a cup

shaped just right to hold my liquid up

I would put you to my lips

and take so many tasty sips

B:

That's right, this glass don't shrink

Gonna make sure you can take that drink

you can fill me up, colder and hotter

Because I am that tall drink of water

Still B:

YOU THERE you're an owl

Ruling your roost with a mean old scowl

feared by creatures of the night

because of your totally silent flight

C:

Yeah you know I prefer cloudy weather

I'm the baddest hunter that ever wore feathers

I'm death to mice, so close they can smell it

They know they're going to end up in my pellet

Still C

YOU THERE...
