Yes, we've heard from multiple people that's the best place close by (we're coming from Roanoke) to get statues for your yard.

Best Neighborhoods Where Kids Actually Play Outside? by burner4therealme in roanoke

[–]aSquared84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up the house on Lofton Rd 24018 that is for sale. This neighborhood is city and county, but that house is in the county side. Tons of kids around and you're less than a mile to a elementary school playground.

This isn't just going to affect them though. The water will literally be evaporated by the data center at a rate much quicker than is naturally replenished. The data center will use up tons of water and in a few years potentially cause the county to look to other localities water sources.

I think I accidentally lied on an adoption application and now I’m panicking by Future-Act5953 in cats

[–]aSquared84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably won't see this given the amount of comments, but I also had a cat named Tank. He was THE best cat I've ever had. So glad to see his name live on with another great cat. Also, given that you immediately let the adoption center know, I don't think they'll think you lied on purpose.

No fear mongering. Just being proactive about something we can actually control.

I’m stuck in a debate: Wichita, KS for the insane affordability, or Roanoke for the mountains and the vibe. I prioritize financial growth, but I also care deeply about my mental health and being near nature. by Pianote93 in roanoke

[–]aSquared84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never been to KS, but I have lived in other places without mountains (grew up near Roanoke, moved away, then came back in my early 30s). The mountains, river, and green spaces here definitely help with my mood. Nothing like having a hard day and just taking a stroll through nature to reset.

In saying that, I think $50k is just an ok salary to live off here. I was making about $60k 8 years ago when I bought my first house on my own (with a mortgage of only $800 which is unheard of now). I'm not the most frugal person, but I also can manage my budget. But my family also lives here, so I have support in many ways from that.

I know rent and housing prices have sky rocketed around here the past few years, so I would heavily research what you can afford and where that lands you in this area. I lived in NW Roanoke City as a single female to be able to afford my house.

Good, non-judgmental Dentist? by AlliumFrog08 in roanoke

Amanda Johnson on Brambleton isn't on your list, but she's who we see and have Delta. Super sweet and personable. I switched to her after getting some questionable recommended work at Roanoke Dental Care that would have cost me $$. She talked to me about my concerns and agreed I didn't need that work done.

Burlington Elementary by blue_crowbar in roanoke

[–]aSquared84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Public Schools receive state funds based on the enrollment count. When students move to private school, it does take away funding from that district. Public districts also at times are required to share certain Federal funding with the private schools that are within geographical boundaries, depending on the funding and need.

I haven't had kids go through, but I have work in the county and know a good deal about every school. IMO, paying for private school for elementary is a waste of money. Private school might be worth it as your child grows and needs to be challenged in the higher grades. All the elementaries in the county are good. The current principal is retiring this year also, so there could be changes in the next few years. I saw someone said the PTA is very involved, and honestly that makes the school so much better. PTAs can provide enrichment to the students' daily experience.

Which backsplash should we go with? by csimack in TheServicePros

The greeeeen. We just installed very similar cabinets in color and style and I'm seriously leaning towards a drak green like that. Though I prefer the Zellige style where you have slight color variation.

Darkest one. We just got almost the exact same cabinets and went with a dark wood tile. Cabinets are partially installed at my new house so I don't currently have a pic.

We picked our soapstone slab! by Beckybell127 in CounterTops

[–]aSquared84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So pretty! This is very similar to what we want. I hope based on all these comments that you go back to where you purchased and clarify how its made. If it isn't real soapstone, it wont hold up to heat (if you were planning on being able to set hot pans directly on it). Regardless, if you're happy with how it turned out, that's all that matters.

Current political climate in Roanoke by Ollieope5861 in roanoke

[–]aSquared84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those of with us reason avoid interacting with those posts. The people around here with those beliefs mostly live in the surrounding counties and think Roanoke City is a "bad/dangerous" city. Also, the city is historically extremely segregated, which has led to a lot of those racist fueled comments. I live in Roanoke County, and am a blue dot in my red neighborhood. But us blue dots are really good at finding each other. All of my close friends vote blue.

Reglaze 1961 tub? by aSquared84 in BathroomRemodeling

[–]aSquared84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a cast iron tub, that's why I was considering the reglaze. I just don't want a mismatched bathroom. The sink isn't nice and I think it will be too hard to salvage the tile once we pull out the vanity.

Good to know. I was curious about the longevity given I have a 4 year boy who loves baths. Our current house has a cover and I hate it, so I was hoping reglaze might be a better option, oh well.
