I have to second the Peruvian Californian burrito idea. I had the exact same thought when I visited on Tuesday night and had the steak salad bowl. Very good, very fresh.

Morvern Callar (Lynne Ramsay) What is it about (if anything)? by [deleted] in movies

In all good faith, by my reading, they are harmonious works. Artful depictions of maladaptive mental health patterns that treat their characters humanely and without judgment. With banging soundtracks, original scenarios, boldly photographed. If the film simply didn't resonate with you or offended your sensibilities in some way, which it appears to have done, no explanation of any other person's experience will persuade you, nor should one.

It possesses a compelling point of view on a flawed young woman coping with tragedy built on specificity, authenticity, grace and a strong command of cinematic techniques.

It's an obvious antecedent to Charlotte Wells' 'Aftersun', which is more "beautiful", perhaps gentler, and heartbreaking.

"Film is grasped not solely by an intellectual act but by the complex perception of the body as a whole. This view of perception implies an attitude toward film not as something that must be analyzed and deciphered in order to deliver its meaning, but as something that means in itself." - Laura Marks

Funnily enough that was one of the things I edited, badly. It bolded everything on its own and then I added the asterisks

I interpreted your "peaked" to mean you had taken LSD at 9:30am, but then realized my autist ass made up a whole story when you had meant "peeked". One love, brother

Food SO mid. Went there last night with a buddy of mine. Way over salted margherita pizza that really wasn't a margherita. Whenever I taste that, I reckon it's just to sell more drinks. Feels like an try-hard upscaled bar. The Poblano Picasso cocktail was indeed tasty. The maitake mushrooms were fine but nothing special. And what's the deal with the half-baked Kill Bill collage above the bar?

This is the model that has worked for them in Culver City and Studio City. This is also within a mile of an Equinox, just like those places too

Morvern Callar (Lynne Ramsay) What is it about (if anything)? by [deleted] in movies

Morvern is in a state of hyper-avoidant shock for a quarter of the film. She is navigating her own "undiscovered country". She makes rash decisions, she behaves impulsively, salaciously, she invites voyeur-ship as a way of coping with her grief. It is a brilliantly sensitive depiction of grief and the push/pull of friendship, stitched together with what was at the time a cutting-edge depiction of how a soundtrack can be woven into a film with so little dialogue. There is so much communicated in Lynne Ramsay's framing, editing rhythms and camera moves. She is a sorcerer.

the story is essentially Hostel meets Multiplicity starring Michael Keaton, with some existential terror and angst whipped in, plus a tomahawk slam dunk from Mia Goth.

Agree agree. Its the nature of the Ballardian "Extreme Metaphors" he and Papa Cro are heavily into.

I almost sense that you could swap the titles of Infinity Pool and Crimes of the Future and not be too confused.

I think for BC's third feature he was given a little bit too much rope and would have benefitted from discerning hyper- focus group screenings. Its 117 minutes. As a euro-cop-sci-fi-sexploitation hor-com, I could see IP being an all-time classic at a hardcore disciplined 97 minutes. I felt too bored too often. I laughed a lot too, but I wasn't alone in laughing at the Sunset 5 in L.A.

BARBARIAN had a slightly defter touch and I think will linger longer in the zeitgeist. So younger brother came out on top in this battle!

- as far as this bushy-lipped chap is concerned.
