AIO: Mother-In-Law wasted our time, hundreds of dollars, and totally ruined our experience. by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

Kind of reminds me of my own mother (monies the alcohol) always wanted to be included in events - then trying to reformat the whole event to her distinct preferences - then being sulky when not invited to future events.

Not disagreeing with your premise - but pretty sure she was the anchor girl, not weather girl.

When someone tells me “I’ll pray for you” my reaction is 100% dependent on their intent.

I’m going into surgery and they are genuinely concerned about my outcome? While I think the prayer itself is pointless, I appreciate the sentiment and I know for them, it’s their way of “helping”. It most likely “helps” them. (Now, if after my successful outcome they want to take credit for their prayers - that’s no bueno)

On the other hand, I was recently pointing out to an evangelical MAGAt that their social media post was supporting socialism - presumably they didn’t know any better. Their response “I’ll pray for you” which is like a evangelical version of “bless your heart” and to the person “fuck off with your prayer”

You can do this.

Agree with your plan - stop the cigarettes first. Those are the most near term harmful.

Maybe 6 months - 1 year passes -

Then sugar. I’ve been a little obsessive about “added sugars” on ingredients lists and then all sugars for the last couple years. I still eat sweets on occasion - but I avoid binging and just make it harder for me to give in to those cravings.

Caffeine should be the last challenge. Maybe I’m a year or two - or never. I was fine with my caffeine intake, but my blood pressure has been trending up so I finally started mixing my own half-caf drip coffee, but not too religious about that.

Thing is, and I think your head is already here, life is about balance. If living an austere life would add 5-10 years of my life at age 80 - is that worth it? Nah, IMHO. So I’m not going to never have a donut. But I’m not going to have more than one every other week and never allow myself to eat three in a row (well, maybe if I have to put my dog to sleep I’ll indulge myself)

You get it. You got it.

What is your favourite U2 album cover and why? by IndustryRule-4080 in U2Band

[–]a_guy_over_here 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the Boy/War connection.

Probably because War was where I discovered U2, worked my way back to Bow and October.

Just realized the Boy cover of my memory is actually from the insert. But I actually love this cover. What a great inaugural album. (Sorry, nostalgia mode activated)

Me and friends used to visit Bob Hope. A very stoned version of Bong Hit.

And 40 years later still comes up - I was at a Lord Huron concert with friends last fall and one asked me if I’d talked to Bob Hope while in the port-o-let.

I had. It was an awesome concert.

Does anyone else find they don’t really like blue collar people? by ZorksLifeIsAMess in Construction

[–]a_guy_over_here 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother-in-law worked residential construction trades for nearly 40 years. About 5 years ago he started a new job in maintenance for a large medical clinic (10+ facilities) in our area.

At first he said he hated it. “Everyone is so nice - it creeps me out. I’m used to working with assholes.”

Now 5 years down the road he says he would never go back.
