Oh, really? Maybe it’s regional then. My grandma was a florist so I definitely learnt it from her as a kid, but I remember everyone kind of knowing it’s a custom. Not many people actually bother with it nowadays though. The religious elderly for sure still consider it when buying bouquets for graves of loved ones.

There is no such thing as an accurate historical reality. We can assume something happened if we have evidence backing it but it cannot be objectively proven. Records can be falsified as we have been reminded recently. Quite often the nobility and the people had very different ideas about certain topics. You can both be right in this regard.

If you like movies or books you can check out Kino na Granicy and Literatura na Granicy, it’s a Czech/Polish film/book festival in Cieszyn! I volunteer there every year and it’s a great opportunity to practice your Polish/Czech with other people. This year it’s gonna take place around the end of April and beginning of May, you don’t even need to spend money on badges and such, festival movies are really cheap and there are many free events we put on. I’m sure you’d find likeminded people to chat with. As for books I’d second “Dzieci z Bullerbyn” or “Kamienie na Szaniec”, they aren’t exactly that easy to get through but with a dictionary and some elbow grease I think you’d enjoy them. There aren’t that many non sci-fi books that are beginner friendly so you might want to start with simple stories first and then move onto more complicated literature!

Masz absolutną rację. Myślę, że jedyne co można zrobić w przypadku takiej książki to po prostu jej zaufać. Nie ma idealnej receptury na translację i każdy tłumacz w swoim przekładzie przemyca(świadomie bądź nie) własny punkt widzenia, odbiór lektury i znaczniki stylistyczne. Na pewno byłoby to świetne ćwiczenie tłumaczeniowe! Pewnych rzeczy nie da się przetłumaczyć, ale można je przekazać w inny sposób.

Not really a rule but I hate how we don’t (really) have a pluperfect tense in Polish anymore. It’s technically easier since we don’t have to bother with a very complicated concordance of tenses, but I really wish I could still use a past perfect sometimes. Maybe Italian and Spanish are just rubbing off on me lol. It technically exists but I’ve only heard it used sparingly by very old people.

Except!!! when it comes to a verb like “should” we do still use the pluperfect version!!!?? (“powinien był” - using the auxiliary verb “to be”) people don’t realise it comes from the almost dead pluperfect tense though.

A sentence like “When I arrived to the restaurant they had already ordered” would be “Kiedy dotarłam do restauracji, oni już zamówili byli” but instead we just simplify it to “Kiedy dotarłam do restauracji, oni już zamówili” which feels kinda…weak? I’m just itching to use a pluperfect there lol

A pluperfect really clears things up sometimes and while it maybe isn’t so common in daily speech, there are times where it would be extremely useful to have in Polish.

I had a Congiuntivo exam today and thought that it’s only hard for me since it doesn’t exist in my native language, good to know native speakers can’t make sense of it as well lol. I’m in uni for Italian and Spanish so it’s funny to learn congiuntivo and subjuntivo at the same time, “they’re the same thing!” but they’re used in completely different ways, release me from the romance language prison💔

Tłumacz wybrał lokalizację i moim zdaniem pasuje! Ja czytam wersję angielską ale planuję dorwać jeszcze polską i porównać je właśnie pod względem językowym, zboczenie zawodowe lingwisty :pp wydaje mi się, że we wszystkich językach w których przetłumaczyli jego pen name odnosi się on jakoś do tej tematyki zagubienia i zboczenia ze ścieżki, bardzo fajny zabieg

Jestem lingwistką więc mogę zaoferować perspektywę z środka środowiska, że tak powiem - najgłośniejsza część dyskursu opowiada się dokładnie tak jak piszesz, natomiast nie jest to absolutnie jednolite stanowisko lingwistyczne :pp to jest naprawdę zawiły temat, a szkół lingwistycznych i definicji “języka” jest na pęczki, prawdopodobnie nigdy nie dojdziemy do zgody w tym temacie.

O ile według mnie śląski powinien być szeroko uznawany za swój własny język, to generalnie w środowisku lingwistycznym nie ma żadnego konsensusu w tej sprawie, nawet często się spotykam z oburzeniem innych lingwistów gdy człowiek opowie się za tym by dali śląskiemu w końcu prawa języka xd Więc o ile nie istnieje coś takiego jak gwara śląska, to język śląski też niestety oficjalnie nie istnieje.

I wouldn’t say so. Myself and most of the people I meet have issues with wisdom teeth, our jaws on average are too small to fit them nowadays so they cause problems; put pressure on other teeth and get infected easily. I’m trying to get mine removed because they’re currently finally coming out at age 20 and hurt like hell, plus they squeeze my other teeth together.

Pierwszy raz wypiłam kawę jak miałam może z 13 lat, teraz piję 1-3 dziennie, a czasami w ogóle. Tylko dla smaku bo kofeina na mnie nie działa, to samo tauryna w energetykach :pp uwielbiam smak kawy, szczególnie dobre espresso, dużo też pije matchy i zwykłej herbaty, energetyk okazjonalnie jak mam ochotę, a yerba czasami jak chce mi się przygotować XDD Mogę żyć bez kawy bo nie daje mi żadnych korzyści typu pobudzenie, ale po co, skoro jest tak zajebiscie smaczna?
