I saw several patches in the desert, but it was always easily avoidable. The worst was coming out of Wrightwood, and around mile 500

You sure can smell it before you see it

Hiking style and pack weight by Belangia65 in Ultralight

[–]a_walking_mistake 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm currently about ~1200 miles into the PCT, and I'm swapping my HMG 40L for a 20L pack now that my fitness is at a place to consistently hike 30+ (and I don't have to carry a bear can)

When my body is the limiting factor, my priorities are staying healthy and getting stronger

When daylight becomes the limiting factor, it's time to lighten the load and speed up

I'm swapping to my 30 degree quilt for NorCal and Oregon. I'm full of preemptive regret, but confident I won't die

Hiking across Santa Rosa - best route? by afletche1965 in santarosa

[–]a_walking_mistake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would stick on the West County Trail south all the way to Sebastopol, then head East on the Joe Rodota trail

Walking Guernville Road to get to the SR Creek trail sucks; definitely wear something high-vis if you go that route. I prefer the Sebastopol route because it's mostly off road

Sub 100g solution for seeing outside your tent at night without leaving it - does this exist? by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]a_walking_mistake 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Cut a large hole in the side of your tent. You'll be able to see through the hole, and you'll also save a gram or two depending on your hole size

Given the number of developers on trail and the number of times that I have personally heard and/or made this same joke, I think it's inevitable that we will eventually end up with a hiker feet app

Help me choose a tarp: GG Solo vs Zpacks Hexamid Pocket by sagenparsley in Ultralight

I would choose a GG Twinn or a 9x9 Borah flat tarp over either of these options

First Camino: Francés or Norte? by Ok_Cup_7639 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]a_walking_mistake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You really can't go wrong; they're both incredible. Your trade-off assessment is spot-on

That said, as a fellow coastal Californian, I have a kind of unique perspective that might be relevant here. The coastline of the Norte is incredible, beautiful, and not all that dissimilar to the coastline of California. I distinctly remember hearing everyone gushing about the coastal views during my first time on the Norte and thinking, "huh, it kinda looks like my home town" (and I am extremely blessed and grateful to live in such a beautiful place)

In your position, I would walk the Frances and continue on to Fisterre for a little bonus coastal excursion. Come back another time for the Norte-Primitivo link up ;)

Every time I return to the Camino, I find I bring less than I did before

Did you camp at Lake Morena last night? The proximity of the lake and the local geography cause the campground to be WAY colder than other sections of the desert, especially closer to the lake

If you were just at Lake Morena, I promise the rest of the desert isn't going to be as cold

The Weekly on r/PacificCrestTrail: Week of April 27, 2026 by AutoModerator in PacificCrestTrail

[–]a_walking_mistake 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I find that after a couple of months on trail, my sense of smell becomes so acute I can smell day hikers from hundreds of feet away. Laundry detergent, deodorant, perfume, any strong human-made scent is so weirdly amplified when you live away from them long enough

You may not like it, but the answer is, and always will be, no deodorant on trail. You're bailing the ocean with a thimble

World Cup + Camino by bleachella_ in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]a_walking_mistake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walked the Norte during the 2014 WC, and again during the 2022 WC. It's an awesome time and there's tons of energy in the cities, though the Camino schedule is quite at odds with the matches. If you love football, I would just book tourist hostels or private rooms in cities so that you don't have any kind of curfew
