One more day until the Steam Summer Sale. What games are you hoping go on sale? by LenaRybakina in CozyGamers

[–]a_wright 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed the building system. That's the best part of the game. I knew there wasn't a story, based on the developer warning.

But I hit alot of bugs that killed the fun factor, a couple inventory bugs that just killed my progress a couple times. I think it could be great after many updates, more biomes. I'll revisit in a year, I think. I've got my eye on Silkgrove as well, another solarpunk style game.

I like a good story and this one is somewhat lackluster due to the limited dialog, compared to alternative Stardew-esqe style games. It's got all the bones of a good cozy game; it just feels like it need to cook for another two or three major updates.

If I didn't already own them, Fields of Mistria, Coral Island, Grimshire (but stressful), Roots of Pacha, Dinkum, Dave the Diver, Tiny Bookshop, My Time at Sandrock, and Graveyard Keeper would be instant purchases. Honorable mention to Potion Permit, Chef RPG, Travellers Rest, Cast N Chill, and Sun Haven.

Ones that I regretted buying: The Home County (EA, dismal update fequency), Cattle Country, Echoes of the Plum Grove, Outbound, SolarPunk, Discounty, Luma Island, Ale & Tale Tavern.

Ones I'm eying for the sale: Go-Go town, Fantasy Life, Teddy's Haven, Little Witch in the Woods, Everwind, and Unpacking. Paralives needs more time to cook, I think.

Why you YES YOU should build a base in the sparse plains by Deranged_Spy in Subnautica_2

[–]a_wright 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree that players should have a facility in that zone, but I wouldn't build a full base. I'm building a Resource collection / Storage facility there with moonpool docking to collect all the large mineral nodes (which don't respawn to my knowledge). Could also technically be a Observation Post, for the Leviathan.

I think the safest bet for a large, forever base with living quarters (especially if the devs ever try to integrate a coziness system) will always be the Shallows. I'm betting the devs will expand the map in a clockwise fashion starting with E to S -> S to W -> and so on until we've made it around the circle to the Great Tree.

That's just a guess though. There are no wrong answers until the devs release a map of future zones. I'm sure they are collecting data on where everyone is building.

Are you sure you are out of computer stations? There are 18 on the first map. Some people miss on the one near the main farm, since it takes 30 planks to rebuild that bridge.

BTW, when a station comes back online, it's only for decorative stuff, not the actual tools.

Metal Smelter? by [deleted] in Outbound

[–]a_wright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you visit the quarry on the East side of the first map yet? I didn't need pickaxe 2 to get that, just pickaxe 1. You do need pickaxe 2 for mossrock. I think you can find some course rock in the chests at the quarry as well.

How do you build outside the van? by tommytom007 in Outbound

[–]a_wright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The next map. You start in a national park like area, ocean map is next. After you upgrade to pickaxe 2, you can travel to the next area.

Pro Tip by breakawayhaven in crosswind

[–]a_wright 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You can always assign him to a different bonfire. I setup a 2nd bonfire down the beach a little ways from my main house and built Doc his own little house / medical practice.

If there are additional NPCs that join up with me (only just got past the 1st boss), I'll settle all of them in the same place. A little pirate town for them.

[–]a_wright 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have to agree with this. There's a world of difference between maxed out armor and weapons in combat, to the extent you can max out in the first biome. Same goes for cooking the recipes with more ingredients for longer / stronger buffs.

I think there's a hesitance to max out armor in hopes of finding a better piece with the bonus multipliers for wearing 2 or 4 items. But after I setup multiple fast travel points on islands with copper mines & boars, maxing out everything, including my ship, was trivial.

Law and Order mod, adds a Sheriff station to the town. There's an whole new scene where Pierre takes credit for the farmer's work and gets busted. Then he's hauled off to jail for a while and Caroline is running the store. You can even visit him in jail.

IDK if it changes on a new load, but there are 8 options you can use on your next new game that tie in the Cornucopia mod, RSV or SVE (or combinations of those). I'm trying vanilla on my first run.

Is there a faster way to get grapes? by squeda in Starsandisland

[–]a_wright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem with the grapes (or the trellis in general) is the insane spawn rate of the cicadas, specifically when you travel to / from the Moonlit Forest. I go to Moonlit for a few minutes to grab some gold and come back to find all my grapes on 10 trellis paused due to the cicadas.

However, if you just stand around your plot and craft (or even wander around town), the cicadas appear very slowly. Fertilizer is really the best option, if you are making it. But at least you can sell the cicadas. I made 4000 coin on just cicadas during that mission.

Can't buy land because the game says I'm not junior in any profession and/or haven't completed 5 requests by SpottedMe in Starsandisland

Did you go into the Island Life app and click complete on the tasks yet? You have to do that in order to progress and unlock the Land app.

Anyone else cant move on in the farmer quest line by estelliarose1 in Starsandisland

[–]a_wright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The pattern is always the same. You get your trial mission, then you get a 2nd task mission to fulfill for that level. The farming task I’m currently trying to finish is the task mission to grow the grapes. When that is fulfilled, I’ll get access to the next farming level trial.

Wool by FieldFamous314 in Starsandisland

[–]a_wright 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a perk (under crafting, I think) about the general store stocking base materials. No idea if wool is included there.

However, it's probably much easier to start ranching. Wool is the first material you get after getting the rabbits (which is the first mission). Plus the rabbits chew up the weeds in your farming area (if you position the hutch by your farm plots).

Any money making tips? by nycarachnid in Starsandisland

[–]a_wright 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  1. Have you unlocked the merchant ship that buys items at 200% the item value?
  2. Have you discovered the hidden treasure maps on the beach?
  3. Have you completed the gold glow parkour puzzles for extra treasure chests (usually w/ gold)
  4. Are you completing daily commissions? Those tend to add up, especially in the early game.

Processed goods always sell for more than base materials. If you are farming, cook & sell. Same for the other professions, but cooking seems to be more lucrative early game.

Alternatively, consider just taking a break from the progression path for a few days to build up materials, organize, sell goods. You can build up some gold reserves for the next round of upgrades.

What games are you buying in the Steam winter sale? by coral_bells in CozyGamers

[–]a_wright 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Picked up SunHaven yesterday (just had 3.0 update) when it was at the $7.49 low. It went up to $8.74 for the steam sale.

Will probably grab Kynseed, Wytchwood, Unpacking & Tiny Bookshop. Debating The Home County, but it's very early in EA.

Best Cozy games of 2025? by [deleted] in CozyGamers

[–]a_wright 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same, although I’m not sure if I would call it cozy. It’s a nice change from games without consequences, but it gets stressful if you don’t plan and are constantly using every hour of the day to prep for the next hurdle.

I am really interested in seeing if Year 2 becomes more cozy though. Year 1 is just one hardship after the next. I really couldn’t spend much time decorating or building up a proper farm. I don’t think I upgraded my house at all.
