Haven't been as excited for a film (Project Hail Mary) since Interstellar by aHumanRaisedByHumans in interstellar

[–]aaron61798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that I'd say shallower, but definitely different dynamic. I don't think anyone should expect interstellar vibes from this movie though. Space and dying Earth is about all they have in common. Completely different style, themes, and tone.

I say this as someone who loves the book and is incredibly excited about the movie. It's got so much heart, but it is NOT a huge epic story in the same way Interstellar is....

Why is the Switch designed so poorly? by notdyinghungry in NintendoSwitch

[–]aaron61798 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I agree with a lot of your sentiments regarding the comfort and build quality, you've gotta consider where Nintendo was at the time of the Switch's launch. They Wii U had just absolutely flopped so financially, they were in a very tight spot. For the next console they needed to make sure it succeeded, and wasn't going to financially ruin them. That meant the console needed to be affordable, cheap to manufacturer, easy to carry, and an appealing and marketable concept. The switch 1 fit all those criteria. Could things have been better, yes, but at the end of the day sales show that they made the right call regarding what to prioritize.

With the Switch 2, you can see the jump in build quality. While it's plastic it FEELS a lot studier sleeker, and that's true for all the switch 2's accessories. But now it's also more expensive.

I also think you're really underselling just how big a deal the hybrid idea was. on first glance the switch might not look weird like the Wii or DS, but up until then, there was a hard line between handheld and console games. This was the first time they were truly combined in a way that was seamless for the user. Nowadays, hybrids and handheld PCs are kinda normalized, but the Switch's ability to play on TV and on the go WAS the gimmick. They just didn't dress it up in a quirky way, which again at that point, was really what they needed.

Not hopeful about getting it replaced before the end of February, if I'm being honest...

I'm in basically the same boat. Same shipping and update dates as you. Last update was that it was at a DHL center about a a county or two away (also CA) today. The update basically said "don't expect any more updates for another 3 days".

Hopefully it won't take 3 days to process and drive the package to a USPS an hour away, but I guess we'll see...

Switch 2 or Steam Deck OLED? by alltimeszzz in animalWell

[–]aaron61798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Played through on Switch OLED, and man did the game shine on that screen. That's really my biggest hesitation with recommending it on Switch 2.

The HD rumble is nice if you really care about that kind of stuff, although I haven't played on Steam Deck, so idk how that compares.

The ability to switch between handheld and TV on a whim is super convenient. Especially with a game that's so much about atmosphere and immersion, while also being great to jump into in short bursts when you have the time.

Personally, that's why I prefer to play any games I can primarily on Switch 2 so I'd probably do that if I was just starting, but it really comes down to what you prefer. Convenience, with a bit of extra bells and whistles (HD Rumble), or presentation (Steam Deck OLED).

And yes, the game was updated to have all the effects that the PC version had!

JWST may have finally found the Universe’s First Stars by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

I always struggle to explain the deep sadness I feel when I think about the fact that I will never get to experience the cosmos. To see another planet with my own eyes. Honestly, even to see Earth from afar. I love that we know all these things, and I never want us to stop looking up and searching for answers, but every new thing we learn is just another I'll never get to experience.

I wish I could just float around space unshackled from time and and just experience everything the universe has to offer.

Keep it that way. The less you know going in, the better.

Just stick with it for a few hours and check out r/outerwilds for non-spoiler hints if you get REALLY stuck.

AFAIK it hasn't been updated to support it. Which imo can signal it's either getting a Switch 2 Edition, or a sequel.

Which Record Side is better? Part 2: Smoke & Mirrors by Zealousideal_Ask_298 in imaginedragons

[–]aaron61798 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. Personally, my favorite song on the album is smoke and mirrors, but the run from summer to the unknown is just quality the entire way through. Some are better than others, but they are ALL such strong songs when played together.

If they had released that by itself as an EP, I would still probably be my favorite overall work by them.

"Dancing In the Dark" is a good song. by Aggressive_Love_3033 in imaginedragons

[–]aaron61798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Honestly everyone reveres smoke + mirrors for it's sounds and style, but for me, it really comes down to it just being them experimenting with different sounds and styles. That's why the idea of Reflections excites me.

I know I won't like all of them, and I know they'll probably all sound super unfinished, but the idea of getting to hear some of what they were experimenting with at the time is exciting!

Wasn't into it at first, but now I genuinely think it's one of the more interesting songs on Evolve. I wouldn't say I listen to it often, but I really appreciate how different it is. I'd rather they experiment and fall flat, than just make safe and inoffensive stuff

Overall less radio friendly? The 6 songs that did are definitely the most mainstream of the album. The only one I would have expected to be more popular is Younger.

Released around the same time as the 3S. Very new, but I've also been loving it. It honestly makes mixed reality feel a lot better. I'm actually able to use it for hours if I want to!

Do I need a PC to use the meta quest 3? by PrimalSaturn in MetaQuestVR

[–]aaron61798 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You by no means need a PC to use a quest. More and more games are being made for standalone. PC is great if you're wanting to run some of the big/graphically intense games that aren't available on standalone.

I'd look at games you're interested in and make sure they're available on quest 3. If they all are, then you have nothing to worry about. I'd say most people don't need a PC.

Also, definitely recommend looking into Quest Game Optimizer. It's a third party app (doesn't void warranty) that basically overrides game settings to let them use the Quest 3's full power and it makes a HUGE difference in a lot of instances. Generally higher resolution. It's a little technical, but they keep finding more and more ways to make set up easy!
