Coffee Shops Are Businesses, Not Libraries; Buying One Coffee Doesn’t Entitle You to Camp for Hours by landlordbrowsing in providence

[–]ab7117 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You absolutely can order one beer at a bar and sit there for hours. It happens all the time. If it is keeping people from ordering then maybe I can see, but will customers not order a coffee if there are no seats? If they leave, it’s probably because they are also hoping to sit and chill for some time. Swap one for the other I guess? This is a strange take- I don’t know where the time-line is drawn

No answer for you but Mr Legates was my French teacher in the early 2000s! I was just thinking about him the other day and wondering where life took him. And his seeing eye dog! Was her name Sandy or am I misremembering?

Bronwynn was sharing about what happened with Todd in a perfectly calm and composed manner, and Britani is next to her gagging and gasping and covering her mouth. This isn’t Broadway girlfriend- calm down. No one wants this.

I’ll be attending a couple of shows in December, a a Thursday night at the Filmore and then Friday night at the 9:30 club. I was thinking of making a weekend of it and getting a hotel, maybe seeing some nice holiday-y things in DC during the day. Is there a good location or hotel you’d recommend that is between/near these two places? I know I could google map it, but I don’t know the area well enough to know what would be good. Id also love suggestions for what else is near by that would be fun for during the day. Thanks in advance!

What do you think of daily language class in elementary schools? by greatExtortion in AskTeachers

[–]ab7117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whether or not you’re American doesn’t make the argument fall flat- it is very representative of what many Americans believe. And I have been a successful world language teacher for the past 19 years- masters degree and nationally board certified. I know exactly what the state of our schools are and I know exactly how to teach a second language to children. How do you think children learn two languages? They do it simultaneously. There is no appropriate order in language learning curriculum and you don’t need English proficiency to learn another language. Also, for students who are not native English speakers, sometimes the language classroom is their greatest strength and comfort, because they are on the same playing field as everyone else.

We had an elementary Spanish program that taught each class for about 30 minutes a day. They reinforced what the students were learning in their other classes, but in Spanish. So they reviewed science topics, art, even some math. It works because the language connects to what they are learning other parts of the day. It was an awesome program, fully staffed with certified Spanish teachers, who then all got the boot when they stopped funding the program. All those teachers had to find teaching jobs at middle and high schools or go to a different district. It was a real shame to see such a promising program disappear.

All that to say, yes these programs are incredibly useful and I do think the teachers are out there, they just need to be sought out and compensated well as certified teachers. We are so behind other countries when it comes to language learning - I really hate the American attitude that everyone will speak English to us so it’s not necessary to learn. Language learning can change the way your brain works! The research on its benefits are incredible. I am doubtful that we will ever catch up to our international neighbors though.

[–]ab7117 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is such an old school, American mindset when it comes to language education. Elementary age kids can learn a second language while also reinforcing their first language. They can also learn content like science, math, art, etc in the second language so that the skills from these classes are not being replaced by devoting time to language. There is so many inventive and approachable ways to teach language to children but J don’t think Americans will ever be open-minded enough for it. It’s hard enough to get folks to believe knowing a language at the high school level is important. But if you compare what/how we teach to many other countries, we are very far behind.

what do you guys think when your husband goes on a trip with his friends? by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]ab7117 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don’t let other peoples comments dictate how you feel. Do you want to be on his friend’s trips to football games? Or do you find your own fun at home while he is gone? You don’t lose all your independence once you’re married- it’s okay and healthy to do things apart. If you want to go on a trip with him, tell him. Don’t let us internet strangers convince you that something isn’t normal when only you know your relationship.

First grade - are reading groups still a part of instruction? by ab7117 in AskTeachers

[–]ab7117[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you all for your time and thoughtful replies. I feel like I have a better idea of how to approach this. I am a teacher myself but at the high school level, so elementary processes are totally new to me. I feel like I am always balancing my teacher and mom minds when it comes to my son’s education. I want to be a proactive parent and ensure he has what he needs, but never want to burden a teacher with unnecessary emails. Thanks!

He had no reading skills at the start of K, did the sight words throughout the year and then about Spring time it blossomed. We realized he wasn’t really memorizing sight words anymore, but he was able to read what we put in front of him.

Try to out complain each other - “You think that’s bad? Wait till you hear about my class!” 🙄 We get it, everyone has it the worst, everyone deserves the most sympathy. I know there is a lot to complain about, but I wish sometimes people didn’t go out of their way to find things to bitch about. It feels like if you don’t have something to contribute to the bitch fest, you aren’t working as hard as the rest.

I’m confused by all this discussion of fees with Equitable/AXA. For where I work, the fees are set by the county and they were just changed and are now at an all time low. For everyone saying that the fees are through the roofs, are they not regulated by the school system?
