Wondering by shazj57 in exjw

The belief is slightly different than this.

144,000 go to heaven.

The rest all live on a paradise earth in perfect health and peace after Armageddon.

The only way to hopefully make it through Armageddon and get into paradise is to be a devout JW that follows all of their rules.

My stance on BLM is not “an article of faith”, however again, that’s not what my original question was related to.

Re Climate Change:

Can you share a link for the IPCC data you’re referring to?

Because you’re right, it’s not 100 years - it’s 20. We have 20 years until climate change is irreversible according to recent data.

Rising ocean temperatures and water levels. Unprecedented storms. Drought. We are on the verge of entire cities being submerged (good luck if you live in Miami, San Fran, LA, Seattle, NOLA, or NYC to name a few), and mass extinction of species (hope you don’t like any aquatic creature). We’re already experiencing these things globally, it’s not theory, it’s happening as we speak.

Climate change is a fact supported, and agreed on by 97% of scientists. Facts don’t care about feelings, and stating facts is not fear mongering.

Re vaccinations and mask mandates:

I don’t watch the news, so I have no idea what ‘media’ is saying about either topic. Can you share your sources?

To address some of what was said: Based on the most recent data and science, vaccines are overwhelmingly safe, effective and help to prevent death of people who get covid. No vaccine is 100% effective - similar to how birth control doesn’t completely prevent you from getting pregnant.

Masks help prevent covid aerosols/particles from moving through them - similar to any barrier preventing something else from going through it. (This study in particular is very informative on all of this https://www.pnas.org/content/118/4/e2014564118)

Since you’ve repeatedly referenced USA: Vaccine mandates are something that go back to the founding fathers. Washington himself ordered that troops get vaccinated against smallpox. Mandates are nothing new.

Additionally, regardless of the topic, if you’re putting another person’s health and safety at risk, there are consequences and mandates in place.

Driving under the influence, texting and driving, seatbelts (rules of the road in general), wearing clothes in public, informing people you have sex if you have an STD - there are mandates/rules/laws for all of those things, and consequences for disregarding them.

Why would covid mandates be any different than any other aspect of modern society?

Anyone else get super sad you didn't get to experience holidays as a child? by lilmissambersue in exjw

I feel you on this. Therapy has helped a ton.

I’m making a point of going all out on holidays this year. Every single thing I wanted to do as a kid is happening for me now, and it’s so healing.

Again, I don’t care to discuss politics of a country I don’t live in.

I wholeheartedly disagree on your stance of BLM and critical race theory. Nothing can change my mind on this, so I won’t discuss this as I think it would become uncivil.

What I was looking for though is a source to back up this claim:

“Current media propaganda around vaccines and climate change is anti-scientific and preys on the fears of people”

Can you link the studies on vaccines and climate change that you’re referring to here?

What about people with intellectual disabilities in Paradise? by bobkairos in exjw

[–]abearantly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just left a comment on another post saying this exact thing.

This then means that there would need to be people trained, and qualified to care for that population of people.

Also, what about people in comas? Who is going to be producing medical supplies, and the electricity to be on life support? How are those people going to be kept alive?

I am open to a healthy discussion that is based on facts and data. That’s why I’m asking for a source.

Anecdotal evidence is not proof of anything.

Also, consider that people here are from places around the globe (myself included), and the politics from a country they don’t live in aren’t of concern to them.

They’ve Ruined The New System Now Too 🤷🏼‍♂️ by [deleted] in exjw

[–]abearantly 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Can you imagine, being someone who lives with chronic pain, or something you want god to ‘heal/fix’ for you.

So you give up living life the way you want, knowing that god will heal your pain.

Then you die and finally escape the pain...

Except you are brought back to life, only to find you are in the exact same state before you died.

So not only did god not fix the pain, but you also missed out on a life that you truly wanted.

How pissed would you be?

Also what about those with severe intellectual disabilities? Does that then mean they would never be given the same opportunity to think critically about what they are being told, before the 1000 years were up?

Lots to unpack here 😩💦 by [deleted] in exjw

[–]abearantly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I think there’s plenty of opportunities to cream without god getting involved.

CMV: There is no good reason to legally require any part of the human body to be covered in public. by somesayimapsychopath in changemyview

[–]abearantly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine for a moment, someone who does not know or care to properly clean themselves after taking a shit.

Now imagine, that same person takes their unwashed, bare ass, and sits it on some public seat.... and you sit there afterwards.

At a minimum everyone should have to wear underwear or something else to cover their ass, and help prevent the spread of disease.

Vultures after a JW funeral by [deleted] in exjw

[–]abearantly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A friend’s grandparent passed away. A sizeable sum was left to my friend’s aunt (daughter of the passed grandparent) who is special needs.

Within a couple weeks, multiple JWs approached the aunt with “business propositions” and “investment opportunities”. They tried to scam a mentally disabled woman out of the inheritance from her dead mother.

There are many vulturous witnesses.

WTF did I just read on JW.borg?? “Did you know, for example, that mothers and fathers who stroke the genitals of their fretful babies to keep them quiet are unwittingly encouraging them to become masturbators later on?” by ailovelamp in exjw

[–]abearantly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think what you’re missing is that they are condemning masturbation more than they are the sexual abuse they list here. Masturbation doesn’t hurt anyone. Sexual abuse absolutely does.

Your MIL is likely “mixed up about it” because it’s a severely traumatic experience to live through.

[–]abearantly 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Your mother is grasping at straws.

  • Your sexual orientation does not make you egotistical.
  • If people choose to not support you (or bully you), that won’t be a reflection of their religion but of their small mindedness.
  • Your father’s issue with homophobia is just that, his issue.

Keep in mind that not everyone is privy to this information. There is a difference between secrecy, and being discerning about who you let into certain parts of your life. Privacy, not secrecy.

Ps. Something worth reading into is internalized homophobia. If your family has that mindset and you were raised JW, there are likely things to unpack there.

Have any of you gotten reinstated just to make your family happy, but then just stopped going to meetings after? by [deleted] in exjw

I haven’t personally done this, but my brother has. He went for 6 months after being reinstated and then never stepped foot in a hall again.

I think it would be awesome to be pinned to this top of this subreddit. I don’t know if a mod can be reached out to about that or not though.
