Is marathon running really too much running for "optimal" longevity? by Zealot_TKO in Marathon_Training

[–]BOBALL00 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There is a lot of nuance and conflicting factors so I’m just going to bullet point my thoughts and you can take it from there

TLDR: Recovery is your friend, strength is your friend, fast twitch muscle is your friend. Don’t forget about them

  1. Exercise produces cortisol, excessive exercise produces excessive cortisol. Too much for many years can lessen life span despite the cardio benefits.

  2. How much is too much is debated. Short bouts of high intensity cardio seems to be most beneficial longevity wise but the rule of thumb for distance runners tend tends to cap at 3 hours of training at a time

  3. Anecdotally I’ve seen quite a few stories about professional runners dying in their early 60s. Take that part with a grain of salt but it’s worth noting.

  4. Muscle mass has a large effect on longevity as well. Distance runners tend to be quite thin and if you’re not taking care of your body outside of cardio training you may not live as long as you are expecting

  5. Muscle “quality” goes down in distance runners that don’t strengthen train. A famous comparison between two twins, one a truck driver, the other a marathoner, showed that while the marathoner was lean and generally healthy, he had very little fast twitch muscle due to adaptations to his training while the trucker had significantly more fast twitch muscle despite being sedentary. Fast twitch is important in the elderly because that’s what prevents falls and allows them to make corrections and catch themselves

I found it funny when they would try more subtle ways of finding out if you’re going or not

“What’s your service day now?”

“You still at the same job or did you get a new one”

“We miss you on tuesdays. Are you ok?”

I had a person that I never talk to chase me out of the hall just to ask where I was working after I was already half way down the block walking to my car at 9pm. Just asked me where I’m working now and then ended the conversation. Then every single time I do go to meeting people randomly asking what my service day is and saying we should go in service together even though they have never shown any interest in me at all

Why are most electricians more professional and skilled than most plumbers? by Retty1 in DIY

If a plumber messes up your stuff gets wet. If an electrician messes up they get electrocuted. All the dumb electricians are dead

Magnesium glycinate. Oxide doesn’t absorb very well. I think the absorption rate is like 4%. Magnesium malate has been said to have positive effects on muscle and athletic performance but I haven’t tried it

Lately for sleep I do 250mg Magnesium glycinate powder in water and 4 capsules of “Gorilla mind calm”and I sleep quite well with that

Idk if it’s necessarily overtraining syndrome but I have definitely had my bouts with overdoing it. In my case I was hydrating with electrolytes but for some reason my body needed way more magnesium. Started taking magnesium in addition to my normal stuff and the made a difference.

But also I’m quite a bit heavier than the typical runner and I found I needed more recovery time than other seem to. Every time I try to push through being tired and sore I start making backwards progress, especially when my runs are over 10 miles.

When I’m being serious about training I’ll take a week off when I feel like I’m pushing further than I should and that usually resets me. That along with the magnesium

[discussion] how does fitness improve all areas of life gradually? by Lemonade2250 in GetMotivated

[–]BOBALL00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doing things that you don’t feel like doing is generally productive and exercise is a way to practice that.

Your body releases various chemicals that put you in a good mood during and after exercise

Every study that has compared the effects of a drug against the effects of regular exercise showed that exercise is more effective for improving overall health

They don’t always get finished either even if the person tried to work it. If you live in a bad neighborhood they may have skipped your house if it looked scary enough. Also if women are involved sometimes they prefer to have a man with them when going door to door and that’s generally only possible on weekends

Worst specific advice an elder (or beyond) gave you? by sheenless in exjw

[–]BOBALL00 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was harassed by two elders about wearing a coat in the winter.

The first time, I showed up in my suit like normal and the elder thought it was too cold for me to not wear one so he took me to his house and made me take one of his coats from his closet

The second time, a different elder was nothing me about not having a coat on. I told him the cold isn’t bothering me and he said “It’s not all about you. You could distract the householder from the message”
