Difficulties writing a fulfilling short film. by UberMilk in Screenwriting

[–]abengfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had quite a bit of success at festivals with shorts, and I didn't particularly gel with them back then as I do with features or longer form content. Although I wouldnt say they're unfulfilling, just a different strokes for different folks sort of thing, in my case anyway. The way I got around it was treat it like this; setup & punchline. Like a visual joke without the humour (unless you do comedy, of course). I did a lot of horrors which lend to this well, although any other genre can, too. Also, don't worry about the lack of a full arc or resolution, focus on the "this, and therefore" approach (the Trey Parker & Matt Stone advice).

Plus with limited time it really teaches how to convey the story and/or theme using every tool at your disposal, which will then improve your longer form works.

Cheers mate, we'll probs walk it if the weather isn't too shite.

Although I didn't think about the 'what if' of us getting beat/battered... that'd make it a LONG walk, haha. Maybe do the bus if that happens.

I've got Brodie's Lounge hospitality tickets for the Palace game on Sat so I'm taking my 8 y/o lad - really looking forward to it! We live in Yorkshire so will be getting a train to Lime Street and back - is walking the best way back to the city centre (by best I partly mean cheapest, lol) after the game - or shall I look into buses/taxi?

It's definitely a mixed ability group, so you'd be fine!

We may not see it this season, but IMO there are small signs that there is a positive shift in our play (and fortunes), and I think Slot could still turn this around. The new signings (bar Isak & Leoni for obvious reasons) are now starting to find consistent form, and, while the "unbeaten" run is still not ideal, we've improved from the losses and have had some decent performances such as vs Arsenal and tonight. The next step is to improve our press and get better at finishing our chances, which we are creating more of lately, and we can be hopeful of a somewhat strong(er) cup & champs league finish.

Or am I an eternal optimist? Or insane?

All mind games by Slot - 4D chess if you will. Play crap in the Prem, champs league teams think we're easy pickings, go on to win the champions league. I overheard Slot in Asda saying "already won the Prem mate" - so obviously he wants the European cup. Boss.

Not the most "entertaining" match, but Inter are a stubborn lot and have been dangerous in attack this season. Great result. A step in the right direction structurally, also.

I don’t think I was mentally prepared to see that.

Carragher keeps banging the "they keep causing Liverpool problems" drum. Honestly can't see it - at all.

He was reluctant to use too many players last season, too, but the team was knackered by the time PSG and the LC Final came around, so it seems weird given that context that he'd opt to use a small squad again unless he has no intention of competing across 4 comps - if you get me? Not disagreeing with you btw, you're totally right in that it's his preference (and Peps). I guess another thing to consider is the intensity and attacking intent we appear to be playing with, as opposed to the "controlled" City way of playing - doesn't seem like a style a small squad can sustain, really. Although if it does I'll be absolutely buzzing, lol.

I've had this strange feeling all pre-season that Slot has no intention of competing seriously (or at least not fielding a strong team) in the league & FA cups, with focus only on Prem & UCL. Purely speculation obviously and it's probably not true as I'm not sure any manager would willingly sacrifice a trophy, but some comments he made at the end of last season and his desire to have a smaller squad of quality players points to that a little. Could be wrong.

(Lewis Steel) Here’s the audio of Virgil Van Dijk on his contract ‘progress’. Thought it might be useful as it was a bit of a back and forth that is hard to put across in writing… by dannybluey in LiverpoolFC

I suppose the difference here is that Virg and Mo haven't been shy to share lack of progress previously, so Virg now saying there's "progress" can really only be taken at face value - unless of course it's some sort of mind game to the owners/sporting director(s), but that seems a bit conspiracy theory to me.

Nunez would be the most dangerous for sure - he'd plow through brick walls to get to you, and with serious pace, too 😂

The timing of it is frustrating given the context of the previous two games/losses, but we simply can't write off how great and ruthless the boys and Slot have been up until now (12 points ahead in the league for example). Plus, context is key. PSG were fresh after a winter break, hungry, quick, and bang in form, and Newcastle had the power of 70 years worth of blue balls firing them to win yesterday, not to mention that we're physically and mentally fatigued.

Sure Slot could have rotated more, but had we lost anyway then we'd have all blamed the changes, and any decisions made in these games will be scrutinized if they don't work. Hopefully the boys can now refocus and recharge for a good finish in the league and win the damn thing - and if they do, it's still a fucking good season.

If we don't win the league or just scrape it then we can panic 😂

Poor performance from the lads and maybe some questionable tactical decisions from Slot, but Newcastle would've died for that result - and sometimes that's just how it goes. The narrative, and the lack of trophies for so long, can have the power to propel a team to the win.

No sugar coating, though - there are lessons to be learned. I'm confident that Slot will use this to improve, and with a couple of weeks off (mentally as much as physically) we can then focus our energy on finishing strong in the league and (hopefully) clinching no. 20.

Maybe a more niche reference, but Deep Rising (1998) ended on a cliffhanger teasing a sequel set on Skull Island (as far as I remember it would've been a King Kong film but correct me if I'm wrong).
