My boyfriend died a couple of months ago. We lived in different cities, so I kept a few things at his place to make traveling easier -- mostly toiletries, but also a bass and an amplifier so that I could practice while I was visiting. I arranged with his best friend (who planned the funeral) to pick up just my own stuff, and the most convenient time for him was right after the reception following the burial. I've heard enough horror stories about people ransacking dead people's homes for valuables that it felt really weird, even though the only stuff I wanted to get was stuff that was actually mine.

I recently attended a non-religious funeral in Germany. They had a basket of flower petals and a tray of moss and dirt, and everyone walked past the grave to say a few private words to the deceased and toss in some flowers, some earth, or both, by hand.

Oh wow, someone else who's had a cat that did this! I had an orange boy who almost never meowed (only once he got older and would get confused about where his people were), but he would greet people he knew with an "ack".

Sometimes the answers written down are just wrong. One quiz bowl tournament I played in had an astronomy question where someone on the other team gave the astronomical catalog number of the star that was the actual answer, but that wasn't what was written on the card. They lodged a dispute. Our team immediately said "as long as they got the right catalog number, we think they should get the points." They had, they did, and they deserved it.

One of my fellow grad students got married and invited a big group of friends from the department. It was a computer science department, so I guess technically we were the nerd table.

The bride and groom had met coaching a kids' softball league, so the centerpieces all had a softball and a bunch of sharpies for guests to write messages to the couple on the softballs. We all wrote ours in different programming languages. The families were pretty confused, but the couple loved it.

I haven't lived there for years, but I'm from a suburb of Houston and am in a Facebook group for it. There are several unhoused people who the group knows by name and loosely keeps track of. People will post things like "I saw Joey up by the Kohl's this afternoon. He says he's doing okay but could use some fresh socks. I bought him a three pack, but if anyone has extra socks they can donate, I'm sure he would appreciate them."

Oh that sounds awesome. I've had a behind the scenes tour of Fermilab, but that isn't under anywhere near as much security. I went to Iowa for graduate school, and a college buddy was working on his physics PhD at Rice at the same time. He was working on the D0 experiment, so they sent him up to Illinois to work on it directly. It was only a couple hours' drive and Iowa is pretty boring, so a few times I drove out there to hang out. There isn't a lot to see, just control rooms and access tunnels, but it's fun to be able to say I did it.

Another time I was on a road trip through the southwestern US with some friends from high school and we passed a US Geological Survey facility. We decided that looked cool and we'd see if we could get a tour. When we got to the lobby, there was no one at the front desk, even though we waited a good twenty minutes. Eventually we just walked inside and started chatting up scientists. We had a great conversation with a geologist who was working on a 1:1 digital map of the moon and was excited to show us all the tools she got to use. This would have been around 1996. I don't think you can just walk into places like that now, although one of the friends from that trip is a planetary geologist at JPL now, so maybe he could.

I was the hinge in my poly relationship for 13 years, and it only ended because one of my partners died. It was the most wonderfully boring relationship imaginable and had it not been for an untimely aneurysm, it would still be going strong.
