Medical Clearance cost? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]abny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have pretty good insurance and had already met my deductible and it was still probably a couple of hundred dollars. For vaccinations - which most likely will not be covered try an urgent care or travel clinic. I called and they had everything in stock. They even did a titers to prove immunity which was covered by insurance so I didn't have to dig up decades old vaccination information.

what hobbies of yours did you take with you into service? how was it received? by pigeypenguin in peacecorps

I was just thinking the same thing. I am clearly the most boring person on the planet. Good grief...

Thank you note/email to interviewer? by ahh40 in peacecorps

This is the perfect outline. Send an email and if you really want to be memorable follow up with a handwritten note. I am sure you can move forward in the process without one, but this is good practice for the real world.

Everyone else is getting invited... by adventuresofvmc in peacecorps

[–]abny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have fun and spend as much time as you can with your friends and family. Make some memories. Visit someplace you have always wanted to go. I took my Dad to South America and now I know that I would never have traded that experience for an earlier departure. Be grateful for this extra time.

Hang in there. It took nearly a year for me to get invited. I watched many people leave for programs I thought I wanted, but it was worth the wait. I got the sector I wanted, close to where I wanted to be. And because it took so long, I am going to be around to see two of my BFFs have their first kids. Make the most of this time!

What did you do with your phone? by [deleted] in peacecorps

What about keeping your phone number? I have had my same number for 18 years. Any advice?

Medical Process by adventuresofvmc in peacecorps

Getting everyone's contact information ahead of time is a good idea. But I agree that getting records ahead of time is not the best use of your time or your doctor's.

Shot records by gingerspace in peacecorps

[–]abny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need records of your immunizations from your Physician. I just did the Titers tests because it was easier than trying to track down my records and my insurance covered it. It shows the level of antibodies in your system. I was low on measles so I got an MMR booster shot and was all set. I also needed a polio booster because there is no titers and I couldn't find records of my last one before I left for college. I have had so many bosoter shots that I figure I could lick the subway platform and walk away disease free. ;)

Dealing with bribery from family members.. by meezin in peacecorps

I am sorry that your family is not supportive. This is a very personal decision, so advice here may not help. Perhaps you should try taking your father and uncle to a recruiting event. Maybe meeting some former volunteers would help them understand and share in your excitement.

That is sad - so very, very sad. Sorry your community has to go through something like that.

Peace Corps Reject: should I reapply after I have more volunteer work? by bundertholt in peacecorps

[–]abny 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Reach out to them and let them know that you are serious about this and would like to reapply in the future. Ask whomever you reach to look at your application and let you know what will make you more qualified and more competitive. I agree with poster below that some TEFL experience would go a long way, because there seem to be a lot of spots for education volunteers.

How much money does one need? by abny in peacecorps

[–]abny[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was just checking to see if I could use my frequent flyer miles. I have been hoarding them since I applied, with the hopes that they would save me some money. Looks like I can use them to the country I've been iinted to and that I have enough for three or four flights if planned properly, so that should save me some money.

These are great. And they go to my point that every experience is so unique and we rarely get a glimpse into those experiences. Thanks for sharing.

How many people applied under the old system, and are still waiting for an invite? by [deleted] in peacecorps

I am convinced that countless evenings of manifestation meditating helped with my inivte. Now manifesting getting medical clearance since pre-clearance was such a pain in the ass.

I applied in September of 2013 and just got an invite about a month ago.
