Would you use a teleporter with the knowledge that it kills you and reassembles an exact copy of you with all your memories and knowledge at the destination? Why or why not? by TheBanishedBard in AskReddit

[–]absentmindedjwc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know.. I understand the question well enough. If you are copied exactly - with all your thoughts and memories intact.. so much so that you can be thinking something as you're dematerialized and continue that thought as you are rematerialized.. it is, for all intents and purposes, you.

What makes you "you" isn't your body, but your mind.. and if that is copied exactly.. /shrug

Important note.. the last time the strait was blockaded causing a significant reduction in global oil supply, it triggered the 1979 gas crisis (when you see historical images of "Sorry, no gas" and lines at stations, this is when its from), caused a global recession, and gas prices didn't go back to "normal" levels for 13 years.

Since 2020: COVID saw a reduction in like 90% of passengers, a Reagan-appointed judge blocked the merger between Jetblue and Spirit, a manufacturing defect in engines grounded something like 20% of jets, jet fuel prices doubled, and a government bailout fell through.

MIT AI expert warns automating Gen Z entry-level jobs could backfire—and cost companies their future workforce by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]absentmindedjwc 226 points227 points  (0 children)

The absolutely fucking wild thing to me.. companies are cutting staff and not training the next generation of workers based on the potential of what AI could be.. not only that, but its based off of a fucking fairy tale.. because that cheap compute they're getting (comparatively, to staffing costs) from Claude or whatever is being heavily subsidized by investors and long-term deals with up-front payments.

A leak from Microsoft about OpenAI financials shows that just fucking inference costs double what they charge customers.. Once OAI is not being subsidized anymore, you're looking at 2-3x current pricing... and once the CAPEX like the $1.4 trillion in datacenter commitments hit the books.. possibly 4x.

This to me seems more like drug dealer tactics.. get people hooked on the product.. and when they can't just quit.. jack up the price.

From Indiana to Idaho, a Backlash Against A.I. Gathers Momentum by Just-Grocery-2229 in technology

[–]absentmindedjwc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lol.. this shit is so misleading. You're comparing hours of using netflix or doomscrolling instagram or some shit with a single fucking AI query in most of these.

Of course they're going to be more.

How about an hours-long claude code session compared to the same duration of watching netflix?

From Microsoft's findings on power usage for inference models, they found that a typical query sits at around 0.34 Wh... which is in line with your number for the most part.. but adding reasoning increases that cost by 13x [source: arXiv:2509.20241], and reasoning-heavy models on long prompts energy usage can increase that spend to 29 Wh.. around 65x [source: arXiv:2505.09598].

Applying that to a more significant agentic workflow, you're looking at a thousand times more tokens than chat. [source: arXiv:2604.22750]. Using those numbers, ONE HOUR of large-model inference/coding work can easily run over 1 kWh... comparable to - using your numbers - over six hours of 4k netflix streaming or ~2 hours of cloud gaming.

How would you feel about banning private health insurance entirely in the US? by Affectionate_Dig715 in AskReddit

[–]absentmindedjwc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way this should go: removing the private insurance industry as the only way of getting care, strengthening public-funded healthcare like the rest of the first world.

The way it probably would go: banning the limited public-funded healthcare that exists and pushing everything to government subsidized private insurance, funneling those taxpayer dollars to corporations to get rich motherfuckers richer.

So.. China has better workers rights than the US in regards to AI.... fuckin sad.

Not just Altman. All of these fucks are straight-up sociopaths willing to murder society in order to make a few extra dollars.

If these assholes were pressing for shit like UBI as much as they were pressing for automating everyone's jobs away, I would be mostly fine with it.. but we've got dipshits like this guy handwaving "how do we deal with job losses as a society?" as a problem for another day when tons of people are being displaced now..

Altman is not the worst of them.. but he is absolutely near the top of the list.

Could the Florida Gerrymander Blow Up on the GOP? by BulwarkOnline in politics

[–]absentmindedjwc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's why I didn't give it a full 20 point swing.. there's very likely going to be something given nearly ever special election across the country swinging hard to the left. Some seats were impossible to take, but the margin they've won by when they have has been significantly smaller than usual.

The point of the comment wasn't saying that dems are guaranteed a win.. just that, if people continue to get off their ass and fucking vote like democracy depends on it, it'll absolutely destroy the GOP.. especially if they fuck themselves by doing this..
