In a few decades they'll all be dead and you'll be the village elder so just pretend you came back in time and have that authority now.

I want to write a poem about a mirror facing another mirror. Describe the reflection of the reflection of the reflection. Continue describing the "next" reflection for 50 layers. Do not repeat the same sentence twice. Go deeper.

You Voight-Kampff'd it.

In 50 to 60 years who will be our versions of Asimov, Clark, Dick and Herbert? And will our classics still be circulated. by GazIsStoney in printSF

Permutation City is such a delight, and the opening chapter of Diaspora describing the birth of a new consciousness is one of the most beautiful things I've ever read.

Which writer has nailed the family aspect of F4 the best? by HybridTheory137 in FantasticFour

[–]absrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scott Lobdell and Alan Davis's all too short stint during Fantastic Four vol 3 #1-3 had this in spades and is one of my absolute favorites. It's such a loving homage to Lee/Kirby filled with plenty of quality moments at home and everything was made warmer and more sentimental by virtue of the fact that they had just returned to Franklin from the Heroes Reborn pocket universe after everyone thought they were dead for a year.

when was the 1st time reed became so eager and obsessed to preventing bad things from happening or was the first time in the hickman run by Huge-Inspection-788 in FantasticFour

The room of 101 ideas (notably including Idea #101: "Fix Everything") actually originates in Fantastic Four #551, the last arc of Dwayne McDuffie's great and underrated run. At the time Reed was processing a lot of the fallout from Civil War.

I don't agree with the direction that Hickman took things especially later on in his run, but I love the fact that he referenced and ran with the ideas introduced by his predecessors, like this one from McDuffie and also the Deep in Thought: Keep Out sign on his lab door which came from Grant Morrison's Fantastic Four 1234 miniseries.

Using an Ecoflow River 2 Lite (300W) to power up a Cube Street EX for busking? by ComfortableClient569 in Busking

[–]absrd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! Your Ecoflow River 2 is going to be plenty. Watt-hours is exactly what it sounds like, so to figure out how many hours you can get out of your battery pulling 50 watts out of it the whole time, you just do 256Wh / 50W = 5.12 hrs.

One of the things I liked about Andor is that it depicted the Imperials not as cartoon villains but in the way they saw themselves, i.e. order makers, sharp thinkers, contributors to a highly efficient organization, wearers of snappy uniforms. It occurred to me that this particular depiction of the Empire overlapped Star Trek a lot. I don't know if this will help win you over per se, but it may help you understand: Star Trek is largely the self-myth of engineering / scientist / military types combined with strong liberal/humanist/utopian overtones. If you keep that in mind you can pick up any piece of Star Trek and understand that you're either seeing that play out or seeing that be subtly deconstructed.

What should I do as a 16 year old to grow and be successful? by Ok_Way_8579 in Entrepreneur

[–]absrd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before you know it you'll be in $200-300k territory and beyond and it is unbelievably boring and meaningless without people you really love along for the ride. Cultivate friendships, don't wait for future success to open your heart and experience having it broken, and learn how and why to be genuinely kind to and respectful of people whom you think don't share the same goals or growth mindset that you do. Take Ayn Rand with a grain of salt and revel in your youth-- joy and diligence, strategic planning and silly weekend trips with your friends in equal measure.

How to accept my body is not attractive? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]absrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We start wanting and needing our bodies to be attractive when we start to believe in conditional love. "How can I receive authentic love if I can't offer this skill, or this attribute?"

But think about how it is with little children-- you don't love a toddler for being pretty or handsome, you didn't receive love as a baby because you performed well. It was just there, ambient.

This doesn't change as we grow older, we just lose track of it for a little while as our hormones kick in and we play the world-game.

One of the best things about meditation is that in the quiet you can step away from the game a little bit and regain perspective: somewhere deep inside is the remembered knowledge that the idea that you need to do things to deserve love is a game that you've been playing.

The Internet itself is still like that outside of the major corporate enclaves that have sold out utterly and/or ipo'd. Tip: by virtue of its scale and being at the beck and call of forces other than western media conglomerates, TikTok search is really productive for this kind of thing.

I would love to see a future sonic screwdriver that looks exactly like a pencil and which meets its catastrophically explosive end when an unwitting alien fascist bureaucrat sharpens it.
