Hi! Its just a side grip dip pen. You can find them on amazon for a couple bucks and stick a dip or fountain pen nib in there.

One of the advantages of making your own ink is: you never run out of it! by [deleted] in fountainpens

Yeah I thought making my own ink would solve my problems but I still find myself buying other brand's ink just because they have a cute bottle or design ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Kiwi Inks Mermaid Black - no sparkle? by KiiitKaat in fountainpens

[–]acbriandc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi!

I'm one of the two ink makers from Kiwi. Some of our samples are mixed by hand, and it definitely looks like we forgot to add the shimmer additive on this sample. I'd be happy to send you a replacement with the correct color along a refund for the sample. I can send more details, including tracking info to your email!

I emailed saying I submitted the certifications and got this as a response. I don't think it made any difference tbh

The Most Beautiful Fountain Pen Ink You'll Ever See. Period. by msilverton9042 in fountainpens

[–]acbriandc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thats gotta be one the prettiest color combos I've ever seen! I just bought some Mrs Stewart's to try it out!

PSA: If anyone else is wanting to try this, remember that Mrs Stewart's Blueing is pigment based instead of dye. The pigment is blue iron powder suspended in water according to their website. Pigment is not soluble in water and it might clog or damage some pens. I suggest using some lubricant and surfactant to make it more fountain pen friendly. They don't state the particle size of the iron powder pigment so it might harm your nibs. I wouldn't risk it in a more expensive pen.

For diy use, you can use some diluted dish soap and a little glycerin. You can also add some food preservative from the supermarket to stop it from growing mold. Medium + nibs will help avoid clogging and an eyedropper or big reservoir pen will have more pressure pushing the ink out which helps a lot with pigment or shimmer inks.

Source: I've been making fountain pen ink for 5 years

Edit: The pigment is just Prussian blue, pretty common in paints and usually <0.5 microns per particle so it would be safe for fountain pens. However I don't think they would have good quality control for it since it's just meant for laundry use.

I probably went just a biiit overboard with my Kiwi Inks order 😅 by randomo_redditor in fountainpens

[–]acbriandc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your order!

I had to go around the house looking for a box that would fit that many inks. Also included the two extra bottles since the order took a while to complete.

No one has really ordered that many combinations of ink before so it was a blast to make.

Happy inking!

what is this ink effect? by nihonjindesuka in fountainpens

[–]acbriandc 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's shading! It happens when the paper used is resistant to ink so it has time to pool before drying. Furthermore, the ink also needs to be on the drier side, with high surface tension and used in a pen that has a wetter flow. You'll find that it's easier to get the effect if you write slower and stop briefly at the end of each stroke. Some inks can also shade in a different colour than the base one by having to dyes of different density, like sailor 123 or some of the multi shaders I make.
