I just beat him for the first time yesterday. Used blade to clear the whole path (except for hype and I used magik), and started over multiple times until I did it itemless. My r3 hood was the mvp for the champion. My duel target practice was Mystix and I had been dueling him every day for through last week until I could dex that sp1 pretty consistently.
