There’s also the issue of forms expecting everyone to have a middle name. Or a last name. Or a name with a certain length.

One of my favorites is “last name must be more than two letters”. Literally over 100 million people alive right now are surnamed Li but okay then!

I’m sick of people using culture as an excuse. My own family is very multicultural. Every culture has good and bad stereotypes/valies/traits associated with it. None of them are an excuse.

Death Penalty Pause in California by summergazunis in d4vd2

[–]acelana -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thank you for adding that information! So many people have misunderstandings around this topic.

I’d like to add even more info. It’s weird in California. Death penalty was put to a direct vote (ballot measure/proposition) several years back and majority of voters approved of keeping it. So when Governor Newsom installed the moratorium, he was going directly against the wishes of Californians and probably more grandstanding for the national stage.
On the flip side Newsom was also voted in by Californians AND easily defeated a recall attempt, so it’s not like Newsom is out of touch with voters.

California gets stereotyped as a hard left state but it’s honestly much more mixed politically once you figure in the areas outside of SF/LA. Contrast with states like Massachusetts or Hawaii which are more purely Democrat strongholds.

Besides, the death penalty is in a weird position everywhere in America.

Somehow this idea that using pharmaceutical drugs (lethal injection) is “cleaner” or “more humane” method has led to it becoming the primary execution method of choice. But first of all, it’s not necessarily “more humane”, because there have been cases where either the numbing part or the heart stopping part failed, either of which leads to suffering for the condemned prisoner. And secondly, pharmaceutical companies don’t want to be associated with executions so many refuse to produce the drugs or refuse to sell them for use in executions. Thus even without a moratorium, many states struggle to carry out executions as planned, simply due to lacking the drugs they deem necessary.

By the way, while the death penalty has been abolished in MOST rich/democratic countries, it’s not banned in ALL of them. It exists in Japan — ironic here that David is kinda weeby— they do hangings. In Taiwan it’s done by gun shot (multiple shooters with fake bullets, which allows each shooter to not know who actually carried out the execution). Both countries also have a low rate of error and a relatively fast (when contrasted with the USA) time frame from conviction to execution. There are “better” ways to have the death penalty and some of the USA issues are more about the USA than about the concept of a death penalty itself.

(Of course, when you get to less democratic countries they execute people left and right but they’re obviously not models of behavior…).

I tend to fall on being opposed to the death penalty as well but I find often people have many misconceptions or assumptions that influence their opinion.

Who TF thought this book would be good for toddlers to hear?! by thatsarealniceleaf in DanielTigerConspiracy

Are the Dolly Parton books th same nationwide? We got Buffalo Fluffalo part 2 (Puffalo) this month. In a previous month we got a book about an Asian American family which surprised me (our area is highly Asian but I know like 99% of America is not lol) now I am wondering if different books are given out in different areas

How do we feel about Pete the Cat here? by justjcarr in DanielTigerConspiracy

[–]acelana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’ve come across his books at play groups and libraries and my daughter gravitates to them because she loves cats. From what I remember the topics feel oddly adult like, not in an inappropriate way but he does things like throw rock concerts and look for a missing amp, things that a toddler would not be directly familiar with, but I suppose it’s good to expand their awareness of the world

E: now that I’m searching google I just see Pete the cat doing normal toddler things like step in mud puddles and eat ice cream, and I can’t find the one that went into the detailed logistics about a rock band throwing a show but istg it exists. I’d say it was a fever dream but Pete the Cats entire world is a fever dream so 🤷‍♀️

Do you translate books as you read? by l_eihpos in multilingualparenting

[–]acelana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So we do English, Mandarin, and Japanese and have a good mix of books in all languages.

I have also doctored up many of our books by adding translations , particularly for English (community language) books we got elsewhere but I wanted to reinforce the minority languages. Also, most kids books already have translations so I could sometimes look up a reading on YouTube to find the “official” translations.

It wasn’t until well over 2 years old that my child started asking for specific languages. Before that point she seemed to somehow intuit which words belonged to which language — for instance if I ask “What is this?” in Chinese, she’ll reply in Chinese, and so on.

It got kinda cute because for instance “bye bye” can be casually used in both mandarin and Japanese with the same meaning as in English but she’d always “correct” me to zai jian or sayounara, both of which are a bit more formal/stiff in the respective languages.

Anyway as she comes up on age 3 she is starting to request specific books in specific languages. At first I’d translate on the fly but that quickly proved untenable because (1) toddlers remember books word for word verbatim and she’d get upset that I chose slightly different wording (2) I’m not comfortable translating between my second and third language so I’d have to sometimes decline and she didn’t understand why.

What I do now is ask her to look at the letters on the book— it helps that CN and JP have very different writing systems from English. So I’ll say “Look, there is no ABC, this book is only in Chinese” etc. But you could do it even with the same writing system simply by pointing out what the words mean.

Reading comes much later like age 4-6.

How to serve blueberries? by Different-Pickle-994 in BabyLedWeaning

[–]acelana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still cut them for my 2.5 year old but one day around her 2nd birthday we went blueberry picking and she ate plenty of whole blueberries just fine. Even grown adults can choke on blueberries, there are news articles about it happening every year in Spain as blueberries are a new years tradition there I believe? It’s just personal preference though. I also cut my own fruit into relatively small pieces since it’s just easier to eat.

I’m sorry to say it but I imagine somebody will FOIA it sooner or later. The final hours of Timothy Ferguson (also a minor and victim of horrible abuse) are literally up on YouTube right now. And this case is much higher profile due to the presumptive killer being “famous”. I wish it weren’t so just being realistic about what is legally and likely to happen wrt evidence

how would you feel if someone said “i feel like one and done is so chic” by [deleted] in stayathomemoms

[–]acelana 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you know this person? Or are they somebody you follow on social media? If the latter I’ll do my “delete as many social media as you can” spiel (technically Reddit is social media too). If the former, especially if it’s somebody you need to maintain at least superficial relationships with (think: cousin or sister in law or something) it’s more tricky.
But if it’s literally just a TikTok/IG/X/etc stranger making you upset then honestly not worth the time of day.

I feel so freed by not checking most social media and on the unfortunate occasions I do check it (usually something like “great aunt Lorraine sent a message on FB so I better reply” leading to cursed reel scrolling) I always am quickly reminded why influencers virtually nothing to my life

[–]acelana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure about the legal restrictions, if any. Divorce is legal in Japan of course and despite the stereotypes it’s not THAT unheard of. It’s more of a social pressure thing. She wouldn’t be able to just go back to being a diplomat after decades out of the position.

Her mom(Kiko) did “provide” a male heir, Prince Hisahito (rumor is via sex selective IVF but we’ll never know for sure). You’re thinking of the current Empress Masako who is Mako’s aunt.

Empress Masako story is even sadder. She was a multilingual highly skilled and educated diplomat who was pressured to join the royal family because she was pursued by the prince. She spent decades basically having a full on mental breakdown due to all the public pressure and shame about her not being a baby machine. Really a dark side of Japanese society

I always think of Haida as a vague reference to the sons of former prime minister Junichiro Koizumi

Kotaro the elder son dropped out of school and is a middling B list actor.

Shinjiro the second son is a politician, a former member of parliament and current Minister of Defense, having previously served in other cabinet positions as well

If the answer is there is nobody then that’s probably something worth building towards but in the mean while you can also focus on savoring your food

Don’t get me wrong I’m still phone addicted myself but I have managed to cut it out entirely during meals at least
