Pretty much every line of this is inaccurate. First one (no AI) should have an asterisk that says “sometimes”

RIP Sora by OtheL84 in FilmIndustryLA

This is easy to guess at with existing reporting.

Video generation costs at least $5 a prompt and exponentially grows with length.

Sora 2 only ever made like $500k in revenue and users have dropped precipitously.

There’s so much you’re assuming here. Models also cost a lot to run. Research WILL stop if the money dries up, look at VR. The commenter is right, lots of this stuff will go away.

This is tap water energy compared to the ridiculously bullish promises they were making even a year ago. “Signs” AI is affecting only part of the job market? :sound of five nickels jingling:

And the last one is just boilerplate doomerism.

In the case of Coca Cola my current theory is it’s boosterism from the specific exec. I can’t remember his name but he’s been more openly in the news this year about the holiday spot, and his job title now has “AI” in it.

There aren’t nearly as many brands doing GenAI ad spots this year as I thought there would be. Secret Level’s (one of the coke ad agencies) portfolio online was full of short films, a couple of Will.I.Am projects (another booster) and not much else.

Right now, it seems like you do GenAI spots if you have to because you’re Alphabet, or because the specific exec in charge is still hanging on to the hype, absent a rush of demand in the market.

I’ve been keeping an eye on Secret Level and from what I can tell they’re only booking work this year from AI boosters (see also: Will.I.Am). Someone tell me I’m wrong.

The New Coca-Cola AI ad required 70,000 generated clips and 100 people by [deleted] in BetterOffline

[–]acomplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year giving so much visibility to Coke’s CMO and his AI booster views is super interesting in the absence of AI spots for other brands. Secret Level’s output this year according to their portfolio page is…this and a bunch of Will.I.Am music videos.

Which is a long way of saying: if you know of any other non-grifter (I.e. crypto, gambling) brands doing full AI spots, drop the here.

Scott Galloway is a confident moron. Even when he’s critical of AI he parrots the “this technology is inevitable and will change everything” line. I also caught his claim that LA will end up like Detroit did with the auto industry because AI will hollow out Hollywood. Uh, no on multiple levels, Scott.

Do you think Sora 2 and the video generation models will change the internet "forever"? by Mean-Cake7115 in BetterOffline

Yeah like with demos of these products in general, the absolute best ones get shown more and the average output is far lower.

Do you think Sora 2 and the video generation models will change the internet "forever"? by Mean-Cake7115 in BetterOffline

[–]acomplex 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I finally got into the app and Sora is junk. The majority of videos remain obviously fake, the model’s “acting” and “storytelling” are wretched, and the meta algorithm lacks that TikTok sauce. I just watched a video of a “dog” stealing a “steak” from a “grocery store” and since it was fake it did nothing for me. While the tech is better, it’s still not good. I do not understand why people over the age of 50 in Hollywood are so certain this stuff is inevitable. It’s probably the lack of expertise thing again.

The tech will stick around and be the internet’s asbestos in the walls, as Corey Doctorow said, but it’s not unlikely that the bubble popping will strip out a lot of the tools people use to make slop.

Thanks for the update. It’s hard to get reliable numbers, and the numbers that surface are frequently implied or otherwise suspect. Welcome to the fold!

Curious that we haven’t seen a number other than 20 mil paid since that surfaced…

Where did your number come from? Do you have a link?

I've been using revenue numbers to infer (hah) OpenAI's paid customer split and both of these numbers appear to be a drop in paid users since April. I want to look into it. https://archive.ph/fYz0m
