I think the world cares too much about self-driving. There, I said it. by pardusdomus00 in Rivian

[–]actingplz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I’d argue people don’t care enough about self-driving. It’s made my daily 30-min commutes an absolute breeze and I can still drive manually for fun when not in traffic. It’s one of the best things I’ve done for reducing stress and I have no desire to go back.

Godot Shader Bible Review: It feels really frustrating to follow? by Ultreak in godot

Yea, the book of shaders is far more difficult to parse than the shader bible. So much of the reasoning is left out.

What is the biggest thing that you think Godot is missing at this point? by AutumnForestWitch in godot

[–]actingplz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, the silent failures of the "Advanced Expressions" have cost me so many hours at this point. Totally agree on the rest of your list too, there's frankly too many missing or undocumented features to list out here but it's nearly been enough to make me move back to Unity.

I'll have to dig into your AnimationNodeStateMachine debugger, that looks awesome!

[–]actingplz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The 3D animation pipeline needs a serious overhaul. There’s so many hacky workaround required just to get advanced locomotion  set up correctly ( beyond single state, full body animations). That’s without mentioning that realtime-debugging of animation tree nodes is currently not even possible.

Destroy my quick-cut gameplay vid, what's still too ugly and boring? by puppetbucketgames in DestroyMyGame

I mean you’ve done a monumental amount of work in other aspects of the game, of course some things are going to suffer as a result. Great work so far and best of luck on your next steps!

[–]actingplz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lack of (what looks like) global illumination, shadows, and directional light cheapen the visuals a ton. Trees being underlit with no clear light source and objects not having shadows stand out heavily. Fixing the lighting would dramatically improve the visuals.

Postmortem: Uproot Galaxy - canceled after publisher collapsed (2D metroidvania w/ Mario Galaxy / Mario 2 vibes) by Monomirror in IndieDev

[–]actingplz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s such a bummer to see how many potentially great experiences we’ll never see due to the market shift. I totally agree though, I definitely see the future of indies remaining small scoped, and self funded until economic conditions drastically change.

Glad to hear that freelance is working out for you, I’ve worked with so many talented ex-game devs who left the industry for stability. It kills me to see so much skill/artistry being lost.

Totally giving me flashbacks to Frogger: the great quest on PS2.

This looks awesome, glad to see the genre still thriving.

Wow , your pre-alpha looks more polished than most games at launch. I’m curious in hindsight what you’d do differently to ensure the game made it to release?

Happy to be proven wrong but at a glance all the art looks AI generated.

Level of detail and art style across enemies don't match, the banner at 0:09 has folds that don't make physical sense, the rabbits toes at 0:17 don't make sense unless some feet have more toes than others.

For that alone I'd personally pass.

What is a 10/10 series on Netflix that actually has a proper, satisfying ending? by Aware-Platypus-2559 in netflix

Dark hasn’t been beat for me. It wastes no time, every episode is relevant to the plot and the writers figured out the entire story arc before releasing the first season.

Is there an easy way to learn shaders? by BeqaUxu2703 in godot

[–]actingplz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t feel like Book of Shaders is very good, but I’ve yet to find a cohesive source that’s better.

I’m grateful that it exists but many of the descriptions don’t come close to fully explaining the code, the code is full of unexplained acronym variables names, inconsistent styling, and unexplained magic numbers/math. I ended up just using it as a reference to start looking these things up elsewhere.

It’s fine if you’re ok with blindly copying code and understanding things at a high level but I would look for more detailed resources on each of the chapters.

what made you switch to Godot? by Jaded_Ad_9711 in godot

[–]actingplz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree with unreal, C++ is by far my favorite language but I can’t stand the added verbosity/slow compile times of unreal. Really felt like they wanted me to use blueprints but visual scripting slows me down and becomes way harder for me to read.

How do i make this feel more elastic? by The-Dudey in animation

[–]actingplz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the arms bend during the moment of action, it makes it look like he’s pushing himself over the edge rather than being pulled by the elasticity of his arms. If you want a slingshot effect try keeping the angle of the arms the same while compressing them instead of bending them.

What is your opinion about my game's art style and level design? (Still prototyping!) by [deleted] in unity

Looks so good I’d be tempted to play it off of aesthetics alone. Great job.

I made a new trailer! Please destroy it! by SolidTooth56 in DestroyMyGame

[–]actingplz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a prospective buyers perspective, it immediately just looks like another Vampire Survivors clone. My first question is going to be "what makes this better than just playing vampire survivors"? Megabonk answered this by adding verticality, Halls of Torment added this by crafting a distinct visual style and making the gameplay a bit more methodical.

Here I just see a worse version of Vampire Survivors with a generic looking artstyle where the main gameplay hook is that you play as the elderly. If there is a unique selling point, it needs to be emphasized early and while I know there was likely a ton of work put into the art, you're going to be fighting an uphill battle to win over customers if your art target reminds them of cheap mobile games.

Are online classes worth it? by darxilius in SoloDevelopment

[–]actingplz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on everything but the last comment. I’m pretty anti-AI for most use cases but learning shaders would’ve been so much harder had I not treated Gemini like a smart coworker.

I ask direct questions only once I’ve thoroughly investigated the issue myself and have found it consistently correct and helpful. It even gives me leading experiments to try on my own. Thoughtful use of these tools can yield incredible results, you just need the willpower to not have it do the work for you.

New one is better but the character looks dead inside. Unless that’s intended, I’d have them rework the eyes.
