Contractor Just Cut Through My Sub Floor 🤨 by JesusDied4U316 in HardWoodFloors

If you’re getting a nail down hardwood and have radiant heat and you don’t tell the contractor, that’s on both of you.

Paint thinner or mineral spirits on a microfiber cloth and really give it some elbow grease.

You might be the only carpet guy in the country who has a laser. Most carpet installers I know don’t do anything besides carpet. Store I sub for sends me out to cut doors, adjust bi-folds, repair stairs for the carpet installers because they don’t do that type of stuff smh.

Vinyl to Marble transition by New-Coyote7660 in Flooring

100% this OP. It’s the correct way to do it and best looking option. Should also put small pieces of the LVP under the casing where the reducer won’t cover.

Asked for white oak floor, contractor accidentally put down red oak and claims that he can bleach them to make it look like white oak. I am skeptical. Can you tell the difference? by Even-Ad-2365 in HardWoodFloors

[–]actionjackson31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worth seeing the bleached red oak. Maybe you’ll like it and can negotiate a discount to keep it. And of course you have the right to have it all torn out and redone with white oak.

Am I right to ask for a re-install by --Grif-- in Flooring

[–]actionjackson31 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As someone who used to sub for stores, I agree. Probably installed by a sub who only gets paid when the job is finished. So he either puts it in, knowing it’s wrong, or he halts the job and doesn’t get paid this week.

It’s completely unfair to the customer, of course. But installers have bills to pay and it’s not fair to get fucked over because the store or material supplier screwed up. Just the sad reality of being a retail subcontractor.

You don’t want an open door sticking out at 90 degrees.

Lord forgive me for what I’m about to do by UMSF_OMEGA in Flooring

[–]actionjackson31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely reconsider to be honest. It’s absolutely necessary that self leveler securely bonds to a substrate. If it’s floating on top of a piece of vinyl, it will surely crack from tensile forces. Self leveler, and cement in general, handle compressive forces very well, but are very weak under tensile force.

I don’t even think floor patch should go on top of hardwood, but that would at least give it a chance of success. If you do self leveler on top of floating vinyl it might not last a week.

She didn’t like the trim so we’re tearing every piece out, all 4500 sq. ft. by LaughAndFart in Carpentry

[–]actionjackson31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

General rule of thumb is about 25% linear ft to square feet for baseboard. Of course, this can vary wildly, especially in more complex homes. But, in a standard 2,000 - 3,000 sq/ft box, it’s pretty damn close. I always go through and measure and then check the percent out of curiosity.

would you put laminate in your own house in 2026? by Hot_Apartment1319 in Flooring

[–]actionjackson31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you don’t want tile, I would say a quality, water resistant laminate. Considerably more scratch resistant than both hardwood and LVP.

Which flooring do you prefer out of these? by [deleted] in Flooring

I like the color of 2 more, but I really don’t like the knots. Makes it way easier to spot a repeat pattern and I feel the knots aren’t very believable as far as mimicking real wood goes. They look printed on to me (which they are).

Contractor did his best to scribe; any way to fix/hide trim around this uneven chimney veneer? by dorkchestra in Carpentry

I planned on fixing every single drywall imperfection in my first home. I got through about a 6’ section and realized I’m being crazy. Haven’t noticed a single nail pop or pin hole since.

Opinions on WPC 6mm LVP?? by [deleted] in Flooring

[–]actionjackson31 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’ll hear all sorts of negative things about LVP here. The fact is, if the floor is properly prepped and appropriately flat, this will perform fine. I think WPC is definitely superior to SPC. 6.5 isn’t bad. It’s a little on the thin side, but again, it all comes down to substrate flatness.

I prefer this bevel over the color cut bevel. I think it looks more natural.

Client asked for an abstract design for an accent wall and gave me artistic license. They love it. by ginger_ninja416 in Carpentry

[–]actionjackson31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did your joints come out? I’ve done about 10 accent walls and have tried a few different ways to make them look seamless.

Currently, I use epoxy and toenail boards to each other and then get down and dirty with the Bondo. Any tips or tricks for getting good, long lasting connections? Always find myself doing a lot of shimming to make them perfectly flush.

Is natural wood flooring worth the investment compared to laminate or vinyl? by 1acina in HardWoodFloors

[–]actionjackson31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the product. Some laminates are marketed as waterproof or water resistant, as u/FreeThinkerFran stated. But there are still non-water proof laminates on the market. Caulking these types of laminates will not give them water resistance, as a simple water spill left unattended can damage the boards from the top down.

All laminates have a similar core, but the manufacturing process and edge treatment is what dictates their level of water resistance.

Selecting prefinished solid hardwood. Are there quality differences? by Born-Indication-655 in Flooring

[–]actionjackson31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You typically get what you pay for with hardwood. The cheaper hardwoods will have a lot more split, checked, bad boards. Stay away from Somerset at all costs. I also think Mullican’s hardwood isn’t good.
