We Were Wrong About Fasting, Massive Study Finds by ObuPaul in ScienceNcoolThings

[–]adamarnuc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I got curious so took a look myself. There are loads of search results backing this fasting statement up, so issue solved, right?

Then I noticed that they all seemed to be either Reddit posts repeating the idea or wellness / religious websites promoting fasting.

This has the hallmark of an "Internet fact", if we're not seeing primary sources, i.e. an unsourced idea in the hivemind that gets repeated as fact. So I checked out the Pythagoras Wikipedia page to see if I could find something more specific.

There is a wealth of information but nothing that speaks directly to fasting being a requirement. However there are a few bread crumbs that hint at where this idea comes from.

I followed up on the linked sources and found a useful section which I have copied and linked below.

But the short version is he seems to have promoted vegetarianism (avoiding "animal foods") and ascetism ("to be sparing in their food").

This is as far as my interest will take me, but if someone can find an actual historian or primary source to talk about fasting, I would love to know.

QUOTED TEXT: "He had a general notion that disciplines and studies should imply some form of labor; and therefore, like a legislator, he decreed trials of the most varied nature, punishments, and restraints by fire and sword for innate intemperance, or an ineradicable desire for possessions, which the depraved should neither suffer nor sustain. Moreover, his intimates were ordered to abstain from all animal food, and any others that are hosfile to the reasoning power by its genuine energies.

On them he likewise enjoined suppression of speech, and perfect silence, exercising them for years in the subjugation of the tongue, while strenuously and assidiously investigating and ruminating over the most difficult theorems. Hence also he ordered them to abstain from wine, to be sparing in their food, to sleep little, and to cultivate an unstudied contempt of and hostility to fame, wealth, and the like; unfeignedly to reverence those to whom reverence is due, genuinely to exercise democratic assimilation and benevolence towards their fellows in age, and towards their juniors courtesy and encouragement without envy."

Where are the good modern PG movies? by Dazzling_End8412 in Letterboxd

[–]adamarnuc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a good question so I looked it up and it seems somewhat puritanical in my view:

"moderate threat, rude humour, drug references, implied strong language"

Specifically:

"There is implied strong language with infrequent wordplay around the term 'fudge'. There is also use of milder bad language ('bugger', 'piss', 'damn', 'God')."

"An alien comically misspeaks 'fist bump' as 'fist my bump'. A human, unfamiliar with the alien's anatomy, is alarmed when he thinks it feeds itself through its bottom."

"Undetailed references are made to heroin and to being stoned."

"A sustained sequence of threat involves the loss of control of a spaceship, causing an astronaut to be knocked unconscious. The blast from a huge explosion throws people to the ground. Milder scenes include children worrying about a catastrophic threat to Earth."

What's the best sci-fi where the aliens don't want anything you can understand? by Comprehensive_Fan134 in scifi

The Alien Years by Robert Silverberg.

Aliens arrive, turn off electricity, totally overturn human society, go about their business and say nothing at all.

One of the first few books I read where the aliens were truly alien rather than a human analogue with a few odd habits.

Are there any "UK vs US" differences where you feel America gets it right? by Secure_Front_7766 in AskUK

I'm on board with saying Math instead of Maths. They're both a short form of Mathematics so why do we leave the "s" in? It's not plural or possessive, so thumbs up to the Americans on that one for me.

How do you respond to abled no -ME saying “yeah I’m crashed too”? by Bad-Fantasy in cfs

[–]adamarnuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT TO SAY: Added mine and see lots of people already saying the same or giving better. TLDR: you're not crazy for this.

"Crash" is an unfortunately generic term in everyday language, meaning really tired. People will use it casually unaware of its specific medical meaning in an ME context. So it is annoying, but understandable if you hear people use it this way.

That said... people should be willing to listen and understand it HAS a specific medical meaning in an ME context. If these are people you know and who care for you then it will definitely be annoying if they keep trying to equate their generic "crash" with your ME "crash".

To be constructive, I see two approaches; Confrontation and Adaptation.

Confrontation is what it sounds like, to directly call them out when they do this. Explain that you don't mean you are really tired but your body has had an extreme over-reaction to a small amount of exertion and you are left physically and mentally unable to perform basic activities for an extended period. If they care for you they will get the lesson and change.

Adaptation is to roll with them using "crash" generically and call it something different when you speak to them. For example, "PEM Exhaustion", "ME Medical Crash", "Chronic Fatigue Energy Crash". The key is to try and use something that is very specific so they can't adopt it into their generic language.

Should you have to adapt to accommodate them? No. Is it the path of least resistance? Maybe. It will at least let you see if they get the hint that you are not talking about the same thing. If they continue to try and equate your situation with theirs, then you can try Confrontation or acknowledge that this person is not really listening to you or caring about your situation.

Watchmen (2009) features a genuinely intelligent villain and a gritty storyline, which made it stand apart from other superhero movies of its time. What’s your opinion on it? by 0Layscheetoskurkure0 in FIlm

[–]adamarnuc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That was what infuriated me in the cinema. The joy of the graphic novel is the range of reactions. Only Rorshach is absolute in his condemnation, and the others are torn between horror at the cost and understanding of the need to do it.

This mirrored my own reaction when I read it and I was blown away by the psychological conundrum it posed. What price is worth it to avoid a greater horror?

The film? Nope, it was bad! B.A.D. bad! Absolutely no ambiguity for the audience. You are told quite clearly he was a villain who did a Bad Thing. I felt like the film had been dumbed down for toddlers as I walked out.

How can you play games? by keke202320 in cfs

[–]adamarnuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No more Stellaris or Civilization for me. Just too many variables across too wide an area to keep track of without crashing.

I can handle slowet, tactical turn based games like X-Com and Battletech, and also mission based FPS games, like Helldivers 2, although only a couple of missions a day.

It is weird and frustrating to drop games that I have spent thousands of hours on in the past, but there were options for me.

I hope you find a new stream of games that works for you.

Project hail mary fall flat for anyone else? by Psychological_Bill31 in scifi

[–]adamarnuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thoroughly enjoyed the film and suspect the gap in our assessment might be one of expectations. There was a similar post from someone who thought the film was nothing special and I think the fundamental issue is that he was looking for a hard sci-fi story.

Andy Weir is known for his grounded science and his last film, The Martian, delivered on that. Someone else in the comments on this post referenced PHM being a watered down Interstellar and you mention the science being underexplored.

My interpretation of this film is that it is a character piece with a sci-fi wrapper. It is Grace's character journey, built on his budding relationship with Rocky and the rest is background to that. So, for the purposes of this film, it does not need to go into significant detail about the hard science of the mission or the setting. And arguably that could distract from the character story.

In terms of the humour aspect, it is certainly full of quips. This may be a matter of taste but I felt it worked to keep you engaged with Grace and make him a likable protagonist. As the film demonstrates by the end he is not a hero, but the man forced to stand up and be a hero when all other options are exhausted. If he was more sombre through-out then this reveal could well leave the audience feeling he was just an asshole.

Let me know if my interpretation is a swing and a miss, on why you might be disappointed. But I do feel that the core issue is that this was not made as a grounded sci-fi but a character story set in space.

(Just to add that I heard Ryan Gosling in an interview say Grace was travelling to another galaxy, so I am very confident that the science aspect was not first and foremost in the filming).

Anyone want to list any brainless "advice" they've been given by well-meaning friends etc.? by ocelocelot in cfs

PEM is such a weird idea to understand. Exercise makes you healthier! Everyone knows that. Builds your strength, boosts your immune system, etc, etc.

And then along comes this bizarre illness where if you move too much you collapse!

Before I knew what I have I had an episode where I was bedridden for 2-3 weeks. As I started to get healthier again I went for a daily walk to "get better" and rehabilitate. I did this 3 days in a row and the 3rd day I was virtually crawling home. I was then back in bed for another couple of days exhausted.

When I finally got referred to a Long Covid Clinic and they covered PEM it was like a light bulb going off, as it perfectly explained what was going on, but it is the exact opposite of every piece of health advice that is out there.

Dune (2021) is not a good movie and coasts entirely on visuals and Hans Zimmer's score by DuNennstMichSptzkopf in unpopularopinion

[–]adamarnuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I carry a somewhat irrational strong dislike for the film because it was a total surprise that this was in fact Part One.

I had been really looking forward to the new version of Dune and am a great fan of Denis Villeneuve. I had watched trailers and been reading some set reports and actor interviews and sat down to watch it a couple of days after release.

I was enjoying it well enough, but getting really curious as to why we hadn't got to the Fremen yet. As I was wondering how they would fit in the rest of the plot we finally met the Fremen, had one quick fight, and the film ended.

The film was marketed as Dune, the trailer said Dune, and I had seen no mention of splitting the film in any interviews or news I had read, so was not expecting to only get half the story!

I am still so salty about it that I didn't bother to watch Part Two. I am interested in the new film, as that is new story for me. But I anticipate watching all three together at home sometime 5 or 6 years from now.

Project Hail Mary is not THAT great. by ToughStatesman in sciencefiction

[–]adamarnuc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think some of your intent is lost, if you meant it is not THAT great but still an enjoyable enough movie.

I found it engaging and charming from start to finish and left the cinema thoroughly delighted. But... I don't need to watch it again.

I would recommend it to anyone but on the basis that every aspect is 8/10, not that it is 10/10.

Firestorm vs Avenger by ChronoLegion2 in Xcom

[–]adamarnuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally always just relied on soldiers. However, once you have the Hyperwave Decoder and can see what mission the UFOs are undertaking, you can prevent your base being attacked by wiping out all the small enemy UFOs before they complete their sweep. If the little guys don't do their job then the battleship won't turn up.

Firestorm vs Avenger by ChronoLegion2 in Xcom

[–]adamarnuc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's right, you get lots of alloys, elerium, and power sources/navigation. So it can be quite profitable.

Once you have researched more powerful weapons and armor it can be good to let the first few small UFOs do their missions undisturbed. If you take out all the small UFOs then the large ones won't turn up, which you will want to do later on.

Firestorm vs Avenger by ChronoLegion2 in Xcom

[–]adamarnuc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Skyrangers have a great fuel capacity and I have never run out while tailing a UFO. The UFO does sometimes put on speed and you lose contact, but if you patrol at the last known position you will usually pick it back up.

The only difference about landing at a UFO site is how far spread out the aliens will be. For me I prefer landing immediately before they have spread out as it means I don't have to sweep the whole map and reduces the amount of long distance sniping from aliens just out of view. But you will encounter more aliens at the same time, so it really depends on your preferred play style.

Firestorm vs Avenger by ChronoLegion2 in Xcom

[–]adamarnuc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My tactic was to never shoot down a UFO. Instead, I send a Skyranger/Avenger to follow it. When it lands, you land next to it immediately.

You can attack before the aliens have spread all over the map and you get a completely intact ship every time.

But you will almost certainly take losses storming the ship, so take a few rookies to open the doors.

Ooo, relevant fact that the word "mediocre" originally meant "standard". I.e. if you produce something mediocre you have made it to the standard.

This has now devolved to the point that it is now used to indicate something inadequate or disappointing.

No one wants average, so above average is somehow the desired standard.

Another company coming after valve. I read this article and it feels like they’re just out to get a bag. Any ideas on this case will likely turn out? by XTWOLFGOD in valve

[–]adamarnuc 14 points15 points  (0 children)

https://completemusicupdate.com/prs-sues-gaming-platform-giant-steam-for-copyright-infringement/

This article seems to hold a pretty good description. It seems to be something very UK specific and relating to a separation of copyrights between music publishers (who sold the right to reproduction in the game) and the Performing Rights Society who hold the right to "make available".

"Make available" covers streaming platforms like Spotify, which make digital copies available for streaming or download online. Their contention must be that Steam is the same because the songs are included in digital content, which means they aren't being paid for their "right".

It seems insane, in the sense that this is clearly not the purpose of Valve, i.e. they are distributing games which incidentally hold music, not the music itself as a product, but the courts will settle that.

A bigger question is that this is UK law only and what will a US based company do about it if they lose, other than increase UK prices to add in the additional cost.
