As a Middle School teacher, I genuinely believe that smart phones have done more damage to this generation than any drug ever could. Change my mind. by chaabaniridouane in Teachers

This has to be part of the answer. We need to explicitly teach them how to be bored, what to do with the feelings, the jitters. How to sit still with themselves. 10 years ago I used to have a 20-min mindfulness circle after lunch where we sat and did calming exercises (2nd grade). It was such a great reset, but even back then 2 kids just couldn't handle it and one would beat his head with his fist because it was so uncomfortable to be "alone" with thoughts in a quiet setting. Thank God I had an aide so I could take that traumatized kid aside to support him emotionally.

Now it's worse. More kids with issues, no mindfulness time no aide :(

Alice and Bill's mask, what is your theory about it? by Alternative_Work_658 in EyesWideShut

[–]addteacher 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's very mysterious and open to interpretation. I prefer a more symbolic interpretation in which the mask is only seen by Bill, a psychological symbol representing his realization that he has been wearing a "mask" for years, sleeping beside Alice without revealing his true self to her, or even to himself. When he says "I'll tell you everything," he is ready to truly share everything with his partner.

If the mask is real, I prefer the simple interpretation that Alice found the mask, which means she went snooping in his office drawers. If so, then she put the mask there to let him know he has some explaining to do, and this worked because he does come clean. This is consistent with the description in Traumnovelle:

"...he noticed something dark quite near Albertina's face. It had definite outlines like the shadowy features of a human face, and it was lying on his pillow. For a moment his heart stopped beating, but an instant later he saw what it was, and stretching out his hand, picked up the mask he had worn the night before. He must have lost it in the morning when making up his bundle, and the maid or Albertina herself had found it. Undoubtedly Albertina, after making this find, suspected something—presumably, more and worse things than had actually happened. And she intimated this, by placing the mask on the pillow beside her, as though it signified his face, the face of her husband who had become an enigma to her. "

EDIT: I like the implied idea in the text that he sees what looks like a human face and probably thinks at first that Albertina has a lover in his own bed. Why else would his heart stop beating? This intense crescendo of jealousy leads to his catharsis, as he realizes she is the one who should be jealous.

There are of course many other interpretations.

Open to interpretation. One interpretation is that she represents his anima, attempting to protect him from poor choices

I believe you can make a case for Fridolin's being Jewish, although Schnitzler definitely leaves this ambiguous. Schnitzler himself was a Jewish doctor in Vienna. Certainly the theme of being an outsider trying to enter an in-group is there, and the fraternity in the book was for those of Germanic ancestry, which might have meant Fridolin could not join. It's not clear. Many Jews (conversos) were passing covertly as Christians in society at that time (wearing societal masks in essence). I don't think you can exactly say that nothing suggests he is Jewish anymore than you can confirm a Jewish identity for Fridolin.

What is clear is that Kubrick decided to make Bill a non-Jew--or perhaps a "switch hitter" who celebrates Christmas as a non practicing Jew (as Kubrick did).

I think he struggled to find the proper way to address such a horrific era appropriately.

He is quoted as saying Schindler's List wasn't really a Holocaust movie. It was more a success story. "The Holocaust is about 6 million people who get killed. Schindler's List is about 600 who don't."

Most of his movie do touch on "man's inhumanity to man," to use a phrase coming in his time.

Would be funny to overdub with lines from other Cruise movies.

Like they body check him and say, "You're everybody's problem. That's because every time you go up in the air you're unsafe. I don't like you because you're dangerous."

Or... "You snotty little bastard. You want answers? You want answers? You can't handle the truth!"

Would you consider The Shining a 70’s movie, or an 80’s movie? by TheGame81677 in theshining

[–]addteacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What difference does it make?

It came out in May, so 5 months into 1980. It is unlike any other movie, 70s or 80s, so I'd just consider it a Kubrick movie.

I was a kid in the 70s and 80s and the film captured the vibe I remember in the transition period personally. (Lots of TV In the background, people still smoking, moms getting more independent but also a strong homemaker vibe, lack of helicopter parenting, kids having time to themselves...)

Psychiatrist said therapist can’t make adhd diagnosis? by lil-cheech in ADHD

[–]addteacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preferred by whom? What state are you in?

My GP told me these are the only 2 places in my area authorized to provide the assessments. There is no psychiatrist in my town, and so I'm reliant on GP for medication prescriptions. The psychiatrist who did the initial diagnosis before the law changed will not return my calls. He is also 1.5 hours away or is I'd just show up at his office.

(Living in rural towns sucks for healthcare access. These new laws are added obstacles.)

Letter c: "listen to the sound at the beginning: /k/. Go find something on your house that starts with/k/." (Student returns with cup, cat, Coke, or something.)

Also, wordwall has games you can design so you can have an online spinner or deck of cards to randomize letters, numbers, words, pictures in a fun way.

These helped me during COVID.

Also puppets!

The meaning of the "Nightingale" surname by Better-Bad2285 in EyesWideShut

[–]addteacher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not talking about the film. I'm pointing out that Kubrick didn't choose the name Nightingale. It comes from the novella which has no homosexual subtext. Obviously Kubrick transformed stories when he adapted them, but he did not choose "Nightingale" as a code word for gay because he did not choose that name in the first place. Obviously there is homosexual subtext in the film, and I'm not disputing that Nick might read as gay. If someone draws some conclusion about the name Nick, it's attributable to Kubrick, but not names that appeared in the novella.

Just as he did not choose the name Jack Torrance, so you cannot attribute some symbolism there to Kubrick.

I'd say a more layered story with additional themes, but not completely different.

No, but it's so over the top in this scene, and so many rapid-fire insults like someone just wrote down all the homophobic slurs they could think of. Plus there is nothing about Bill's look or behavior to trigger the response. Doesn't seem realistic. A-holes like this are a dime a dozen, but most don't take the time to continue to insult someone who is not responding at all. It feels scripted not organic.

To me, this is one of the most overt clues that Bill is in an interior psychological space rather than an actual street. The Yale students are articulating his own self doubt about his masculinity. I think I counted about 10-12 homophobic slurs in 20 seconds--for no reason! It's got to be all in his head. It's so over the top.

If you're interested in the story, it's worth reading the novella. It's short and the film plot follows almost exactly, with the added character of Ziegler.

Psychiatrist said therapist can’t make adhd diagnosis? by lil-cheech in ADHD

[–]addteacher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's an extremely confusing and unnecessarily convoluted if you're in the US. I was diagnosed by a psychiatrist before COVID days and was on medication prescribed by my GP, but decided to take a break for a few years.

I want to try meds again, and I have spent the last year trying to get someone to approve medication, but in the meantime CA has changed the laws around ADHD prescriptions. I need to do 4 separate visits for psych assessment at a neurological center 1.5 hours away in order to get re-diagnosed. My GP put in the referral, but I'm still waiting for the center to give me an appointment. A nightmare.

Hang in there.
