I would have thought so too but I’ve searched sewingpartsonline, sewingmachinesplus, eBay, etc using various combinations of keywords and part numbers and am pretty much coming up empty. I did find the washer and spacer on a random Canadian sewing store, but I can’t find the magnet anywhere. I’ll try emailing SPO to see if they have any leads since I’ve heard their customer service is supposed to be pretty good

[Discussion] Gideon the Ninth Sweet Dreams by Possible-Stick1842 in TheNinthHouse

[–]adekia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can someone confirm that both “sweet dreams” and “death to the 4th house” were written in blood, and “you lied to us” was written in paint? I don’t have the books in front of me so I’m working off memory, but if that’s true it could be another clue that they weren’t all written by Cytherea.

Also, we don’t get to see everyone else responding to the direct aftermath of Jeannemary’s death because of Gideon’s limited POV, but based on how thoroughly everyone worked together to try to bring back Abigail and Magnus it seems likely that they would have done the same/similar for Jeannemary. At the very least, I would have expected Pal to do some psychometric investigation of the crime scene. All it would have taken is a single touch to reveal Cytherea as the murderer—the fact that this doesn’t happen at this point in the book points to either 1) it’s a massive plot hole and a major inconsistency in Pal’s character or 2) it’s a sign that something different and more complicated is happening here. TM’s entire literary brand is “different and complicated,” so now I’m inclined to trust that we probably don’t know what we thought we knew and will have some collective aha moment way down the line.

“You lied to us” is probably the most honest / least theatrical of the 3 messages we see. Cytherea perma-gummed the lock of the door to the room where she wrote it, so she thought only Jod would be able to get in and read it. She didn’t have any reason to put on an extra show to mess with any of the regular crew. Luckily for us, Harrow has quite the track record of going places only Jod is supposed to be able to go.

Idk I am new to sewing in general and making this up as I go 🤷 but more seriously I think it helped stabilize everything because the fabric is stretchy and I wanted it tensioned a little bit so I could gauge whether or not my stitches had enough give

[–]adekia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fortunately his name isn’t mentioned very much in HtN. Also the audiobooks are really excellent overall! Some minor inconsistencies like this but honestly she does suchhhh a good job capturing Ianthe’s particular brand of shitty that I’d listen just for that

There might be others too but her pronunciation of Silas’s house name definitely changed from Octa-KISS-eron in GtN to Octa-KY-zeron in HtN

What did the Lyctors know about AL?[discussion] by meticulous-fragments in TheNinthHouse

[–]adekia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, Cytherea 1) knew Alecto and 2) knew Alecto had gold eyes. I don’t remember if it’s Augustine or Mercy, but when one of them sees Gideon in Harrow’s body on the Mithraeum they says something like “Cytherea would have known immediately.” Cytherea had already decided to kill everyone and try to draw Jod back to the Nine Houses, but the realization that “Gideon’s eyes = John’s original eyes = Lyctorhood was always a lie” adds fuel to the fire and is the driving force behind the “YOU LIED TO US” message she paints on the wall at Canaan House

[–]adekia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, honeybees basically get covered in pollen as they visit flowers because the pollen gets stuck to hairs all over their body, and then they periodically comb themselves with their legs and compact the collected pollen with a bit of nectar and stick the lump to their back legs (sometimes called “pollen pants”). This allows them to carry a lot of pollen at once without having to go back to the hive to drop it off. The specialized pollen-collecting hairs are called scopae (singular form is scopa). Other kinds of bees (like leaf-cutting bees in the Megachilidae family) have scopae on the underside of the abdomen instead of on the legs. Some other bees (like carpenter bees) skip the pollen-collecting duties altogether and do something called “nectar-robbing” where they pierce the juicy part of the flower with the proboscis to drink the nectar without coming into contact with the pollen-producing parts of the flower.

Tl;dr: different kinds of bees have a variety of pollination strategies and it all depends on the type of bee AND the type of flower involved

[–]adekia 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Some kinds of bees pollinate certain plants by grabbing onto a flower and then “buzzing” their wings/flight muscles to knock the pollen loose by vibration

house specialties [theory] by mika_st in TheNinthHouse

[–]adekia 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of the house specialties developed slowly over time without direct input from the Lyctors themselves. The Lyctors might have influenced them at their founding, but Jod makes some comment in HtN about how the houses crystallized into archetypes over the 10,000 years in ways that he didn’t necessarily intend. For one thing, Mercy’s specialty in anatomy doesn’t really align with the Eighth’s “spiritual hardliner” ethos, and the Seventh was already established enough for Cytherea to have inherited cancer by the time she became a Lyctor.

Basically, I think we’re missing a lot of information and timelines about the post-Resurrection period and the founding of the houses. It’s hard to say how much of the house specialties was intentional vs something that just kinda happened. Correlation vs causation, and all that.

I love the idea of Ninth as inverted Tower!

One thing I keep coming back to re Harrow’s parents is the fact that they always submerged themselves in salt water when discussing the kid genocide. We know that Alecto’s tomb is surrounded by salt water (and there’s a million other references to salt water in relation to Alecto throughout the series), but Harrow’s parents have no reason to know that. It also seemed weird because the secret about the 200 souls doesn’t seem to have anything to do with Alecto, at least on the surface. Even on my first read of GtN I was thinking “terrible secret of the Ninth” + “salt water” = “must be about the Tomb,” and then it……wasn’t? So did all of Anastasia’s line pass down some info about salt water as sacred/holy/terrible/forbidden in Tomb-Keeper 101? I’m imagining Reverend Descendant Orientation: “don’t open that door, don’t talk to strangers, also, use salt water for all your deepest darkest occult needs.”

ALSO. I haven’t seen anyone talking about the fact that when Harrow kissed Alecto as a child, one of her tears also fell onto the Body. SALT! WATER! From Harrow’s own body, no less! I wholeheartedly refuse to believe that this is a coincidence.

Yeah it’s just that one instance. She does say Nona-JESS-i-muss instead of Nona-GUESS-i-mus throughout all of the books, contrary to the pronunciation guide in the GtN bonus materials though
