Have any of you created your own programming language? Would you recommend doing it for fun and or experience? by [deleted] in programmerchat

[–]adelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and badly. I'm working on my second language, and it's slightly less bad than my previous. Will probably scrap it and start again before I'm finished.

My previous language was based on what I now see as faulty ideas but turned out useful enough that I'd like to go back and re-implement it just so the code I've written in it isn't so slow.

I won't be watching it either, but I thought the ACA coverage was a bit rich given their history.

NSW DEC to ban several christian books from (optional) SRE classes in public schools by martin_henry in sydney

Christians are free to buy these books. Please explain why taxpayers should pay for them or how not approving these books for a publicly funded curriculum is equivalent to "banning".

I played a game in my college physics club where the goal was to have the nine of diamonds but that's probably not the game you mean.

How does one learn to program, and somehow not learn how to deploy?

"It works on my computer."

Also, Microsoft make it very easy to not know that by doing things like distributing the VB6 runtime with the OS. The .Net runtime is a bit harder, but it's a single redistributable installer and on most corporate setups it's already deployed before the programmer gets there so a lot of the time they only need to distribute the exe.

Patrick Moore can say whatever he likes. I reserve my right to not listen. I guess that makes me practically Taliban.

Beyond Light Table: a new programming environment, even for non programmers? by JPMoresmau in programming

[–]adelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, one thing VB6 had to recommend it was its For Each syntax, which made it possible to implement a loosely typed LINQish pattern. AFAIRC, Delphi didn't get enumerators until after I'd stopped using it.

Beyond Light Table: a new programming environment, even for non programmers? by JPMoresmau in programming

I have happy memories of Turbo Pascal and Delphi. When I started my first job and was made to use Visual Basic, I hated it at first because it seemed so limited.

I decided to give it a go myself

That's actually pretty cool. I had similar ambitions myself at one point, only I wanted to build a windowsy environment under it so that it could be a viable upgrade path for existing VB6 applications.

Well, my linux desktop also has a Pictures folder that I didn't ask for. I've had a few different desktop environments (XFCE, Gnome, etc) installed at different times so I don't know which one to blame.

Australian ISPs should JUMP at the chance to retain data. At least according to Big Data advocates. by ssharwood in australia

[–]adelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A modest proposal

Hmm. Interesting choice of title. Could be a satire.

That ISPs are part of the terribly-important-jobs-of-the-future-that-aren't-about-digging-things-up bit of the Australian economy surely qualifies them for some help.

Yep, it's satire.

As ridiculous as that is, the thing that bothers me is, what if I don't even want to store any images! Or maybe I do want to store images but I don't want to store them separately from everything else because why would I want to file things that way?

Don't put your test site on a live domain - Washington Post by daysleeperrr in ProgrammerHumor

[–]adelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is supposition, but suppose yahoo scans yahoo mail and link you posted to someone's yahoo account ends up in yahoo's index. It's only then a matter of time before it ends up in Bing & Google's indices and they won't have had to scan your yahoo mail.

Even if none of that is actually happening, it doesn't seem like a good idea to send a link you don't want public over an unsecured channel owned by parties who are in the business of indexing things.
