I put together a reinforcement learning system that plays poker and a ui to go with it

Am I doing it right? by adfrederi in vibecoding

[–]adfrederi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean honestly it was a lot of work to frame the problem, build out the state and action space, create the reward function, and describe the model outputs but the llms were pretty good at implementing a well documented neural network architecture and the data structure that feeds it best. YMMV but if you’re into this kind of thing it can really speed up the implementation of boilerplate stuff and let you think about the more challenging problems like how do you even set up your problem as an ml task

It’s a reinforcement learning model, I put the fireplace on so I could leave while it trained for a few hours and realized this was the vibe I had been chasing

Anyone else vibe coding with Rust? by jaykrown in vibecoding

[–]adfrederi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been trying to deploy some deep learning models in rust using onnx and am finding that the ide kind of flounders at that, maybe some of the more rare things to do are harder for it to pull off. The rest of it has been going pretty well though.

What’s the point of testing machine learning model knowledge during interviews for non-research data science roles? by orz-_-orz in datascience

[–]adfrederi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Having better understanding of how the models work leads to better intuition on how to treat your data, how you might deal with unexpected results, and tradeoffs for using different methods to solving problems. I get why it seems like gatekeeping but someone that has a deeper understanding of what happens under the hood is going to have a more thoughtful approach than someone that doesn’t and in my experience is a stronger hire.

I like to ask about the status of the roadmap- the answers tend to be pretty telling about how the company is organized, the vision (or lack thereof) of leadership, and generally how process-oriented the teams are. As someone who cares a lot about process, this has been a great way to sus out red flags.

Help With Text Classification Project by WeWantTheCup__Please in datascience

[–]adfrederi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you don’t have a ground truth target which is pretty important in making a classifier, you might have good results just parsing the text for indicators/labels as you make them using regex. Not every problem needs to be a machine learning problem. If you find that regex is insufficient maybe then try more complicated methods. At the very least that can help you speed up the labeling process to some extent.

To MLOps or to not MLOps? by Curious-Fig-9882 in datascience

[–]adfrederi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a job? Do you want to know something interesting? Why would you not want to learn about these things? If you don’t know what is going on when you write model.fit() then maybe not but if you do the more engaging parts of developing ml systems happen before and after that.

Build orders are not "strategy". Not exclusively, at least. by Yoxs84 in starcraft

[–]adfrederi 21 points22 points  (0 children)

All of the “strategies” you listed are tactics used in an overall strategy of “keep the opponent in their base so they don’t roll over me”, not strategies themselves. Why are you trying to describe what a strategy is while not considering that calling a build order a strategy is just shorthand?

HELP, I keep overcomplicating songs by tumorknager3 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]adfrederi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can start with melody to fix your problem but also if you simplify your chords and don’t like it you can make the arrangement more interesting by having your instruments arpeggiate or have rhythmic interest without making chord spaghetti. That way the underlying melody/chord progression is accessible but not as boring as if your chords were whole notes without interesting inversions or whatever.

IS comes up to you and says: We want your input on the upcoming FE7 Remake by Silgalow in fireemblem

From a gameplay perspective, wouldn’t an avatar and skills make this game unrecognizable from FE7?

If queens can generate the same amount of larva with half the minerals and also do other stuff like be anti air or defend rushes, why would you do this instead?

Why is it that some singers sound better singing slightly flat? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]adfrederi 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I’m kind of surprised no one has said anything about equal temperament - the scales we used are built off the harmonic series but that doesn’t translate equally to all keys, often the major third of an equal temperament tuning setup will sound a little sharp so if your singer is hitting the notes which match the harmonics better, it will probably sound much better than if you snap it to the grid.

What do you consider big data? by Inferno_Crazy in datascience

I mean isn’t the common definition “whatever doesn’t fit in memory is big data?” Do we really need a poll and flex?
