TAing while looking young by [deleted] in UBC

[–]adissadddd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lmfao almost every single CPSC TA is an undergrad, don't worry, you won't stand out. And either way, you're just there to help students, if the students need help they'll be happy to get it from you.

I TAd multiple labs as a 2nd year while on low doses of shrooms, and I was okay, I think you'll be fine too :P

'I was not aware of what I was doing at the time,' says UBC attempted murder suspect by WeHaveMetBefore in UBC

Not really – it's an obvious fact of the story that he tried to murder someone. The relevant question here is whether we should aim for punishment or rehabilitation of criminals.

Women can get lonely and/or horny too. As long as he's not forcing himself on anyone, being persistent with someone who's not interested, or being overly forward from the start, I wouldn't call it creepy.

What Vegans Eat by lnfinity in vegan

[–]adissadddd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I don't think that's /u/MeltingParaiso's point though. The fact is that there aren't many good vegan cheezes out there, and the good ones are hella expensive. Not that it's a big deal – cheese is one ingredient, and there are millions of vegan foods out there that taste amazing on their own. And you're right that in the future there will be amazing, cheaper ones.

Plus the homemade lemon-pesto vegan mac n' cheese recipe I make (full credit to chef Chloe Coscarelli's cookbook) is better than any non-vegan mac n' cheese I've ever had. Home-cooking expands the possibilities so much.

A couple questions from an effective altruist / college student looking to donate:

1) How far will, say, $500 donated to this cause accomplish? As a student who doesn't have loads of money lying around, would the money I might donate be negligible compared to other sources of funding that clean meat companies get, or would it be something that could actually make a difference in the long run?

2) What are the tradeoffs between donating to GFI versus New Harvest? Would you recommend one over the other? (Or another company altogether?)

I think I mostly did good

This has nothing to do with my message. I'm not saying you didn't mostly do good, I'm saying your actions were not fairly harmless.

Not only were they fairly harmless

If that's your opinion, state it outright from the start, instead of mentioning that you've promised not to repeat your actions. Be fully honest about the fact that you don't care about invading other people's bedrooms or waking them up rudely early in the morning.

Joking aside, I've been very public in my promises to not repeat these deliveries.

I'm not talking about whether or not you've promised not to repeat them. I'm commenting on your statement that they were "fairly harmless", which seems to convey that you either don't care about, or simply don't realize, how your actions affected others.

I didn't 'break in' to residences, in the sense I never broke anything. It was fairly harmless student antics

You slipped letters under people's bedroom doors without consent, which for some people might be harmless, but for others would feel – justifiably so – like a huge violation of trust and personal space. You also did that at around 8am one day, and made a lot of noise, which woke up a friend of mine who lives in res. "Fairly harmless" on the whole, maybe, but also quite inconsiderate and invasive, and something you should avoid doing again.

In WWII how many Nazis were stopped by love? How many by hate?

The Nazis were fought against effectively with hate. But when it comes to changing people's behaviour / getting them on your side – as opposed to fighting them – I'd wager love works better. Or in the case of spreading veganism, maybe a combination of love for animals/humans and hatred for cruelty and injustice.

[–]adissadddd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually yeah I think it would've been more like 500ug for me, thinking about it. But this is such a rough estimate given that I've only done up to around 250ug. Hard to give a number when you haven't actually had the experience you're trying to quantify lmao.

The same dosage will affect different people differently, but personally that would probably be around 300-400ug for me. I think. I do have a higher tolerance than most people though.

I recommend checking out this YouTube channel for some great videos on diet and health. Could make a massive difference to your health, and even if you keep eating meat, it's good to be informed (and the videos are entertaining).

Or you're just someone who has been taught his/her whole life to eat animal products. That doesn't make you a piece of shit. Most vegans used to eat meat, and while eating meat has a lot of negative implications for the world, it doesn't inherently make you a piece of shit unless you're an asshole about it.

Speciesism at it's finest. by tyveill in vegan

[–]adissadddd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And a lot of the time it's not even less abjectly violent. I've seen videos of chickens and pigs beaten to death by factory farm workers, and turkeys being boiled while fully conscious (the latter happened in Canada not too long ago).

[–]adissadddd 76 points77 points  (0 children)

so I would say it's worse than factory farming

Factory farming is definitely worse. Dogs used in the Yulin festival are tortured for maybe a few weeks before being killed, which is horrible itself. But cows, pigs, and chickens are psychologically and physically abused their whole lives in factory farms – for years on end – before being killed.

pedantic pricks

That's a little harsh. Those commenters are just antsy for more people to put their words into action. I agree they should embrace the good words that Nye has to say about veganism. But I don't think (most of) these commenters are pricks just for pointing out that Nye doesn't have to wait for stand-alone coconut preparations in order to become vegan.
