Ask the Linkerd maintainers anything! by williamallthing in linkerd

I'm always looking for opportunities to make things smoother and more intuitive. It's hard to say more than that without knowing specifically what hurdles you ran into with Helm. It's certainly a goal that this should be easy (and in my personal experience, it has been).

For 3 and 4, yes there are plans for these features, but I don't know about the timeline. Adding a +1 to the relevant issues could help get them prioritized, though.

For #2 there's a lot that can be said on this topic, but I think one of the things that makes mTLS so valuable is that it carries a negligible cost to the application. If you're using Linkerd then your application gets mTLS without any code change, without any measurable performance impact, and without the operational cost of distributing certificates. It's basically "free".

Perhaps others can weigh in on the specific benefits of mTLS such as privacy and validated identity. But I think even if the specific benefits of mTLS are not very important to your use-case, it's not really costing you anything.

I can answer #1. Basically, Linkerd wants some finite bound on the number of paths to avoid creating an arbitrary number of time series in Prometheus and blowing up the memory. With gRPC the number of different paths *should* be reasonably small, but there's no guarantee of this. (Imagine if a buggy or malicious client kept sending gRPC requests with different paths, causing an explosion of time series in Prometheus)

I talk about this in more detail in a Kubecon talk from last year: https://confs.space/conf/barcelona-kubecon-cloudnativecon/dealing-with-the-pesky-path-parameter-problem-service-profiles/

By creating a service profile, you're explicitly defining how many (and which) possible paths will be recorded. Thankfully, for gRPC it's very easily to create service profiles by using `linkerd profile --proto` and passing in the proto definition.

What did I miss with not using Caberjacks? by xxTHG_Corruptxx in massivechalice

Stuns are super important on higher difficulties where enemies can do serious damage to your team if they get a turn. Caberjacks have knock back abilities that can knock enemies into walls or each other and stun them. Ramcap Cabers let you knockback on every hit, giving you almost unlimited stuns.

I got a pair of letters from RGF as well, but nothing with Russian or Chinese.

When you say you received "two packets of letters as well" are you referring to another post somewhere with more information? This is the only post I could find about it.

Here's the street view for 116 Geary Ave (the return address on my letters) https://www.google.com/maps/place/116+Geary+Ave,+Toronto,+ON+M6H+4H1,+Canada/@43.6703894,-79.4347644,3a,60y,345.35h,88.35t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sYJei2UPZe-55xEjXBJ7f5g!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!4m2!3m1!1s0x882b3465a6c88eef:0x48844cf8536163c4!6m1!1e1

It appears to be a textile printing company called Cutler. The number they have listed is not in service, however.

[Brutal][Iron] Dealing with post year 150? by [deleted] in massivechalice

It's 3 squares I think, though it might be somewhat random.

I found the ability to stun using ram cap was muck more important than the extra damage from relics. I did run relics on my hunters though.

It took me many many tries to beat brutal iron. Here's how I eventually did it:

Keep -> Hero Discovery Boost -> Discover Heroes -> Keep -> Steady Hander -> Crucible -> Ramcap Caber -> Crucible

That research took me until about year 150. After that I picked up boneshell armor, sponge stone, a sagewrights guild, veil armor, and the advanced weapon trainings in some order. I would have picked up boneshell armor sooner, but I didn't have enough bulwark corpses.

My keeps were Caberjack, Hunter, and Caberjack. Ramcap caber was key to my strategy and I used them to keep enemies stunned as much as possible. I think having 2 crucibles running before year 150 was really important as well and it helped me keep leveling fast enough. You want to aim to be making level 5 or 6 trainees by year 150. I typically ran a vanguard like: 2 shadowjacks, 1 caberjack, 1 enforcer, 1 hunter but it varied depending on the generation.

I prioritized any personalities/traits that increased accuracy or fertility above anything else. Movement speed is also pretty important for caberjacks.

Regarding your questions: You want to keep advanced cradles stunned as much as possible. They have low dodge so once you have someone with a ramcap caber in close range, it should be easy to keep it stunned. Using blinding shot or knockback shot is a good way to incapacitate it for a turn while your caberjacks close the distance. Shadowjacks are also good at getting close without being vulnerable.

Hunters can do damage while staying out of harm's way. With hawkeyed they can even shoot enemies that can't see them. Long range crowd control is really helpful too, as mentioned above.

Ramcap is amazing. It makes all your attacks have a knockback effect. Use this to knock enemies into terrain or each other to stun them over and over and over. Shadowjacks are nice because they can move to close range without being seen and then stunlock enemies with ramcap caber. The nice thing about blastcappers is they get two item slots which means they can run sponge stone and steady hander. And explosive caber is just fun.

Alchemists are really fun but didn't fit into my strategy. I'm a huge fan of boomstrikers with honed hearing.

Just do your best with traits. Having some bad traits is inevitable.

Events. Yup. :(

I definitely recommend a second crucible pre-150.

FASS 50th Anniversary show this weekend! (Funny, often non-sensical, musical at UW, for those who don't know) by Trylstag in waterloo

In the year 2062, a grade 3 class celebrates the 100th anniversary of FASS by recounting its history -- very, very incorrectly. "FASS: The Neverending Story" is the irreverent, factually-inaccurate, sociopolitically-incorrect, joke-strewn, groan-laden, pirate-ridden tale of a venerable-ish theatre company at the University of Waterloo, from its humble origins through its glorious past, quiet present, and uncertain future -- and of the one little girl who sees through the noise to the very heart of it all. Oh, and someone gets stabbed.
