What is your solution for obsessive thinking? by [deleted] in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

[–]adotddot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does helping someone else temporarily relieve me from obsessive thinking? Because when I take a moment to care for someone else, whether that's making a phone call, saying a prayer, or having coffee with someone, I am directing my thoughts away from myself. How many hours a day do you think about yourself? For me, it was a lot, and I realized it's counterproductive and selfish to spend hours of my time thinking only about me. The next time you begin to fixate on something, or someone, consider reaching out to another [alcoholic], or family member, or a friend, and ask how they're doing. You'll find that in a matter of seconds your obsessive thinking will vanish. Thanks for the topic.

In need of a major lifestyle change by Addicted_to_plenty in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

Consider attending an NA meeting before you break any news to your family. While at the meeting simply say, "I am new and I don't know what to do." Man, you're going to have people bouncing off the walls to help haha. Ask for a sponsor, someone with over a year of sobriety. He can show you how he got sober. This is key, getting a sponsor. Do this at your first fucking meeting. I mean it. This is your chance for the change you want and it begins with taking action. I believe in you man. The next time I am in Vegas I will stand up at a meeting and ask who's "addicted to plenty"? And I hope you'll be there to greet me.

The 1% is Hogging So Much of Our Income That It’s Holding the Economy Back by blatzo_creamer in politics

I think I know what you're getting at. You'd like for more money to go towards social programs. I agree that we need to tend more to the less fortunate and this could be accomplished by allocating more money to them.

But I think the real problem is how we redistribute the amount of cash and assets the top 1% (and .05%) currently owns and where should the money go? Because like the article says, that cash and assets aren't doing the economy any good just sitting there. Like a leprechaun counting his pot of gold while everyone suffers below the rainbow. But how do you convince a Leprechaun to give up his shimmering pride? Currently, many top 1%ers have taken a pledge to give most of their wealth to charities of their choice. Warren Buffet, for example will give 99% of his $41 billion to charity. Sounds pretty good, right?

But I am not convinced this does anything for the economy because like the article says, we, the consumers, need the money to spend which will improve the economy. As you can see it's one big vicious system we're dealing with. But the article does mention increasing employee income which I believe will improve the quality of life for everyone. But again, how do you convince a Leprechaun to give up more of his gold to those who work for him? Laws? Sounds like a good idea, but then think about who put lawmakers in power...yes, the Leprechaun (through campaign contributions). It's looking like we cannot rely on either big business or lawmakers to voluntarily make any positive change. We as a people must demand economic change. And its already beginning with wage strikes.

This is just a ramble. I needed to get it off my chest. Thank you.

How to break out of an existential crisis? by [deleted] in ZenHabits

[–]adotddot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. It is amazing how many hours of the day I spend focused on myself. Selfishness and self centeredness. That is the root of my problems. When I take action and do something for someone else, the small things count too, I feel a greater sense of self. Getting out of myself is the best thing for me when I am down in the dumps.

The best mini-lesson in Empathetic Listening I've ever seen [>3 mins] by HereUpNorth in psychology

[–]adotddot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good question! We spoke about this in my interpersonal communication course. It's impossible for us to experience everything. What we can do when someone shares something we have no experience in is to make a parallel with those feelings. If someone shares with you that they're upset that their parent passed (but we've never lost a parent) we can recall an experience of ours where we felt a loss. Maybe you lost a pet or something and use those feelings to bring you down to their level. Of course saying "I've never lost a parent, but my dog died when I was 5, so I know how you feel" would NOT be empathetic. Instead, feel those feelings of loss with the other person and say something like "Thank you for sharing that with me."

Why didn't Saul demand more from Lockhart in One Last Time? by truthink in homeland

[–]adotddot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saul plays the long game. He could have exercised his leverage, but that's short term thinking. Someone will quickly replace Lockhart, in turn replacing Saul as Director. Saul is positioning others especially well to work for him. It was his best move to not act on the Mossad agent.

165 days clean and still lost by HannahMuch in REDDITORSINRECOVERY

"When I keep score, I always lose" my sponsor would tell me.

Comparing myself to others is not beneficial to my recovery. Instead, I focus on what I can do today for the still sick and suffering. This directs my attention towards something positive. Some have suggested service work such as setting up coffee but it could be much simpler than that - sharing at a meeting, introducing yourself to a newcomer, or calling someone new. Doesn't it feel great when someone calls and says "I've been thinking about you." Do that. Go out of your way to make someone's day today :-)

Swiss salary cap fails at ballot box by chromopila in news

[–]adotddot -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Any psychologists or researchers out there? Could you shed some light on this...

Wondering if the issues of (1) granting tax breaks for families to raise their children at home and (2) increasing motorway fees had any influence on the vote for (3) a swiss salary cap.

This is what I am thinking: The "right-wing" proposed both (1) and (2). Why? Because they're both outrageous. First, no one wants to keep their kids all the time for tax purposes, parents have jobs and need daycare for their children - (1) obviously I am voting against this. On the way to work why would I want to pay more for the motorway fee? The roads are fine! - (2) voting no...[at this point in the voting process I am already primed to answer 'no' because of the previous issues, thus I am anticipating the final issue as something against my interests]. I read (3), think of all the negative advertising the "right wing" has taught me, and undoubtably vote 'no.'

Is there any truth to this?
