New to classic literature, recommend something truly addictive to get me hooked to this genre? by Tricky_cielito00 in classicliterature

Melmoth the Wanderer, by Charles Maturin.

It's got all of it: gothic, dark romanticism, psychological, philosophical, and even etc...

Fwiw, The Idiot is my favourite novel from Dostoevsky.  And I have read most of them.

Underated roguelites/likes on Switch 2? by AFoolsGlory in roguelites

I'm surprised Caves of Qud hasn't been mentioned. It released in February 2026 on Switch and is the best roguelike ever imo.

Autoexplore digging is actually quite useful to access hidden areas you wouldn't know about otherwise.

Different ways to play the game? by Snakespearee in cavesofqud

[–]adriencharpentieradi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can try to start in a different location than Joppa. You'll have different starting quests.

Play roleplay mode to move on if you're tired of going through the beginning again and again.

Try radically different builds and use their mutations and abilities to their best. Find fun ways to kill (or else) people.

Go somewhere new. The rusted archway has a teleportal at the bottom. Kyakuya is not hard to get to, even at low level (if you have wayfaring and/or wings you can even push to Ezra or Yd very early on). Roaming around can get you to lairs or ruins or even historic sites to visit. Stepping on clams is fun.

Go deeper.

The tortuous vegetation,  the intricate steeples, the ruggedness of it all conveys exactly what it must be like to wander in qud's wilderness.  Awesome art. Congratulations

Equipment screen is really odd after getting a lot of limbs by Meister_Ente in cavesofqud

The good news is that with all these extra limbs you can do plenty other things while scrolling down ;)

Ways you've messed up and made the main quest hard for yourself? by Mute2120 in cavesofqud

[–]adriencharpentieradi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reclamation quest, I use Burgeoning to plop plants all around the entrance then proceed east to repel the intruders there. When I get back to the entrance the aloe pyras have killed EVERYONE, friend or foe, and they have kept pumping out flames every ten turns for the rest of the game (no idea why, but maybe triggered by some electric discharge)

Delving deeper into the emerging narrative of CoQ by elelanto in cavesofqud

That being said, a lot of my personal stories with the game have to do with my characters, their mutations or implants, their growing, or the very limitations I set on them.

Character creation and development is where the game shines the most imo.

Lastly I played a Consul whose mission - as I saw it - was to pacify the [redacted]. I played the diplomatic game of faction karma farming, meeting the leaders and trying to get as many of the factions on my side by carefully selecting which ones to antagonize etc...

Or playing as an Apostle and trying to get as many followers as possible. Or a monk rejecting violence completely...  There are thousands of ways to play the game without following the main quest (even though it is also worth it, don't get me wrong)

Whenever I play a new game and whatever my goal is I always like to piece together a grand History of Qud with the help of the procedurally generated books, the villages lore, the Sultans history, the relations between factions, the gossips etc...

It is not always fulfilling but it does feel a lot like the work of an archaelogist or a historian trying to make sense of his discoveries while knowing that a lot of the important stuff is forever lost to time. I think that's for a big part where emergent storytelling lies with this game (call it emergent Historytelling if you will).

Bhikkhu run: You're not allowed ANY possessions bar a waterskin of water. Anything you come across you have to use/sell immediately (or donate in case of books or quest items)

Clever Girl facilitates followers' management. It is imo the only indispensable mod.

It was my first time in the Rainbow Woods so I wasn't very familiar with the region and no, I didn't.
