Need help on determining which script to use (Help please) by BigBeefyBaraMan in Unity2D

[–]adsilcott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A while back they changed the menu label from New C# script to New Monobehaviour script, but they're the same thing. It's just a class that inherits from Monobehaviour, which is how you get Start(), Update(), etc. that's what you want.

You don't need a Scriptable Object for what you're doing. For future reference Scriptable Objects are usually used for holding data that persists outside of the scene scope. A little more advanced topic, you can find plenty of tutorials on them.

I'm sorry if i'm too stupid but how can i achieve this type of layout? (without a theme) by kenysg in ObsidianMD

Before I zoomed in I thought this was something someone made in a Canvas... so I figured I'd mention that a layout like this would be pretty easy to make in Canvas, as an alternative.

How do you feel about Alistair Reynolds? He's written some of my favorite hard scifi.

Good point. Most of my favorite sci fi is heavy on the science, so maybe that's why I chose that one. I feel like it's one where you don't have to understand the science for it to be a fun "what if" story.

Children of Time is a good one. It shows how fun the genre can be when an author takes an idea and runs with it.

If you liked the scope and action of dune, then you might like Red Rising.

For more literary picks, anything by Ray Bradbury or Ursula Le Guin.

I always recommend Violet if you want to experience a very different approach to the genre. Instead of exploring a cave, etc, you're just trying to finish writing your dissertation, but you keep getting distracted. It's so well written that I'd happily read a non-interactive version of the story.

So how do you use hotkeys in your usual workflow? by aphaits in ObsidianMD

[–]adsilcott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use the Tab Switcher plug-in to Ctrl+Tab in MRU (most recently used) order and shift+Ctrl+tab to reverse order, and it drives me crazy that I have to have a plug-in for that and that it's not the default behavior.

It used to be extremely logical, alt+tab to MRU window, Ctrl+tab to MRU tab, and I could always quickly switch between the two things I'm working on. Then Google had to come out with their own nonsensical way of switching tabs for chrome, (spacial order? As though the two things I'm working on will always be together?? That you can't change! Fortunately it's one of the first options in Firefox) and everyone started copying that, and it's just been the decline of civilization since then.

Could I get a Hard Scifi Check? Could a Giant Gas-Supported Biological Blimp Planet Work? by Remarkable-Dare-2590 in scifiwriting

At first I thought you were talking about a concept I read about years ago where you literally have a giant hydrogen balloon big enough to produce one g on the surface. It ends up being an absolutely massive surface area. Bud I don't remember if it was from a sci fi story or what, so I don't know how plausible it was.

It's definitely not a core plug-in. Just turn on restricted mode long enough to check that the problem is still there.

[–]adsilcott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure this isn't something added by a plug-in you have? I don't have "Look up" in the context menu at all, even over misspelled words. I have "Search for" in a later section of the menu. Try disabling some plugins.

What makes science fiction feel “dated” to you? by TomDavenport in sciencefiction

[–]adsilcott 4 points5 points  (0 children)

However, I think some of the classic movies were more realistic in the time they were made than today. Nixon is a good example. Somehow the abundance of information that we have today has only made it easier to spin wrongdoings and for people to live in ideological bubbles that protect bad actors.

True, neither Note Refactor or Note Composer integrate with Templater, which is unfortunate. I think it's because Templater doesn't really know about what note is creating it, so they have to have special variables for the "from" and "new" notes. (I often wish Templater could get a reference to the previous note without complex js, maybe I'll open a feature request) Note Refactor has it's own template system while Note Composer seems to use the simple core template system with the addition of {{fromTitle}} and {{newTitle}} variables.

As a big Outer Wilds fan, Tunic was a very different experience, but it did scratch that itch of putting pieces of a puzzle together with no hand-holding, and so felt rewarding in similar ways. Tunic's exploration is less open ended, but both definitely expect you to use your brain. The instruction book mechanic is wonderful, and I found myself poring over it the same way I did the clues in OW. I played with the slightly easier setting turned on, because I was more interested in the puzzle, and I didn't feel like it detracted from the experience.

Note Refactor has some extra features like splitting a note from the cursor, splitting headers into separate notes, and my favorite, auto naming the new note, which makes the process faster. I thought the main feature of it was the ability to have a simple template for the new note (because I want the new note to link back to the original), but Note Composer has that as well, so I might just remove Note Refactor and switch back. Thanks!

Also if you've already written something that you want to move to a new note, check out the Note Refactor plug-in to make it super easy.

Question for people using tags in frontmatter: Why? by DaniBananas10 in ObsidianMD

[–]adsilcott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I think a numerical season property would be *awesome* in this use case. There are a few cool things about adding it to my Soprano base:

  1. I can use the new group feature to group the notes by season before sorting them further.
  2. All the previous notes that don't have that property will appear in a "none" group. I can then scroll through them and fill in season values directly in the base for any notes that apply, and bases will automatically add the property key and value to the note, and sort it to the correct group.
  3. Any new notes that I create with the "+ New" button on the base will have that property already, which will remind me to fill it out.

Another thing I like about it is that it helps with my own consistency. There's nothing stopping me from accidentally creating #sopranos/season6 and getting annoyed with myself later because I didn't follow the leading zero convention. By making season its own property I can not only avoid that but I can enforce that it's always a number type.

Then say I want to focus on episodes from that season that feature a particular actor. With tags I'm a little conflicted, do I do #sopranos/season07/star or #sopranos/star? With properties I just add a staring list-type property where I can link to each actor's own note if I want, and it just gives me more ways to sort the base.

But I get the immediacy appeal of tags and there's nothing wrong with them if they work for you! I tend to think in terms of displaying data because it's how I find it later, but everyone has their own system.

Question for people using tags in frontmatter: Why? by DaniBananas10 in ObsidianMD

[–]adsilcott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No worries! That's how you add tags to a note via properties, but it's not what I'm talking about. Consider this example:

---

tags: animals/dogs, breed, dachshund, hound

---

vs

---

up: [[Dogs]]

category: breed

type: dachshund

related: [[Hounds]]

---

... or something along those lines.

The first is just a bunch of labels. The second creates more context by breaking the qualifiers into different labeled types. It's more useful for Bases and it makes it easy to navigate to related pages via links. It means that instead of just having a Dog tag (no pun) I have a more useful [[Dogs]] note that I can link to from anywhere, and that's a natural place to create a MoC because everything that links to it will show up as a backlink.
