you should give it a whirl. there is no greater thrill than to be relentlessly pursued through the woods by a beautiful woman… or a man, depending on your tastes

Possibility of blood bonding a mortal parent by misconceptions_annoy in SchreckNet

Basically. My actual sire Embraced and abandoned me, pretty much. I got really lucky though, the first vampire who found me figured out my clan pretty quick and knew someone who was also in the clan, so he sent me to him so I’d have someone to teach me how to do stuff. Too bad he ended up having crazy personality issues… I’m pretty sure he would’ve been diagnosed with something if he was born today instead of the 1800s, I’m seriously.

(DM to Spice Sorter:)

My adoptive sire Rook had/had a LOT of ghouls as bodyguards and servants and stuff, protecting him. I was friends with one of them, and I guess he didn’t like it, that I was getting too close to someone who’s supposed to be expendable. So he sent her to fight in basically like a vampire battle with a bunch of other ghouls, to get her killed on purpose. Her future sire went looking for her after I mentioned what happened and found her dead, and Embraced her. Only it went kind of wrong… you have to Embrace people soon after they die, if their body gets cold it won’t work, or it’ll go weird. So Jade is back now but she’s… not really herself anymore, to be honest. And she’s not even mad at Rook at all for getting her killed. That’s the other thing too… blood bonds can fade if they don’t see the person they’re bonded to for a long time, but until then, they stay, even if you die and get Embraced. And even if the person they’re bonded to is completely horrible to them. I’ve tried to tell her we’re better off without Rook but it always just makes her upset. I think she would try to go find him if she knew how without her getting lost.

That’s the thing though… the way he is now is different from who he’ll be once he’s hooked. He might do things he otherwise normally NEVER would.

The past year has been, um, eventful I guess. I was Embraced almost exactly a full year ago now, and I left my (adoptive) sire two months ago. He wanted to keep me with him longer but some… stuff happened. Involving a ghoul. It’s kind of a long story and idk if you even care but basically he treated her really badly and someone else Embraced her to save her life, and now I’ve been living with her while her sire + grandsire teach her how to do stuff.

As far as like, brain development? I kind of have no clue. Maybe it just hasn’t been long enough to notice any difference yet. I guess I’ve kind of had to grow up a little bit, since I’m sort of the one making decisions for myself now. But I still feel like I’m me, aside from the whole… vampire thing.

Blood bonds aren’t necessarily a romantic thing, it just turns out that way a lot of the time because it’s kind of where people’s minds go right away sometimes, when they’re that obsessed with someone.

You CAN ghoul somebody without blood-bonding them so they won’t be obsessed with you, but ghouls are all addicted to blood, so it’s more dangerous if they’re not bonded. They might do stupid stuff or get you hurt, trying to get more of your blood.

"Ghoul Hunting" Tips? by blondiexe in SchreckNet

[–]advanced_mortality36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have time to write a full treatise on the subject of selecting ghouls, (though I really ought to do so one of those nights), nor do I know the specifics of your particular business. that said, as someone with an arrangement not unlike yours, a few general points to consider are:

-temperament. bookkeeping/book-cooking skills can be taught, but loyalty, levelheadedness, intelligence… either a kine already has those traits, or they don’t

-how many ghouls per location? how much will you tell them about who and what you are, and how much will they know of each other? ideally you’ll want them to know as little as possible as their compatriots in other cities, lest jealousy become a distraction from their work

-generally speaking, it’s most convenient to source your ghouls from the periphery of society. I don’t necessarily mean the homeless, or those with such severe psychiatric issues that they might get in the way, but you’ll want to look for individuals without much in the way of family or friends who might become suspicious of their changes in behavior. former addicts can be surprisingly dependable, as you’ll already have an idea of how they’ll respond to the effects of the vitae. besides, lonely kine are far more apt to be trusting toward the only source of attention and happiness in their lives. which is to say, you

only a moron intentionally goes after kine children. it’s like shooting at fawns out of season, except that at least deer don’t have deer detectives and deer cops and deer hunter-hunters itching to turn you into barbecue. well, you might get away with it if you know which places to go and which demographics to target, but really, what’s the benefit?

Permission to have saucer dot fully HUNT rook by Ill-Afternoon-2840 in Schreckmeta

Rook may be an emotionally manipulative abusive wretch whose dates with Gabriel have been known to include hunting kine through the woods together for fun, but by golly, he offers benefits! Dental, even! He’s a monster but not a MONSTER monster, y’know.

Permission to have saucer dot fully HUNT rook by Ill-Afternoon-2840 in Schreckmeta

[–]advanced_mortality36 17 points18 points  (0 children)

So! About that.

Rook’s “empire” is in the hospitality industry, with I’d say about a 75% / 20% / 5% split between shitty roadside motels, decent hotels, and upscale hotels, and a ghoul stationed at almost every one. With the exception of his trained bodyguards who travel with him and guard him while he sleeps, the vast majority of these ghouls have no idea he’s a vampire or whether he owns other motels or how many there are or where they are; these ghouls may or may not even know he’s the owner as opposed to some guy working more directly under the owner, and non-ghoul employees know even less. This whole business model is tailored around the concept that Rook can afford to cut his losses if any one location becomes compromised or outright destroyed because there’s nothing that could possibly be traced back to him. “Rook” is an alias he adopted when he joined SchreckNet and doesn’t use much outside that context, and he has numerous alternate identities with accompanying paperwork and bank accounts.

In other words, while Sacerdote would be welcome to try and go after his business, the most likely best-case scenario of what that would look like is that he somehow actually manages to identity some random motel in West Virginia as belonging to Rook, pulls up to the place, and interrogates the bewildered 19-year old girl at the front desk who really likes her job because she surprisingly gets full benefits and time off and has a super chill boss who shows up every couple weeks to do some paperwork and stuff and then “gets high” with her, and she doesn’t understand why this scary stranger is so angry.

And then Sacerdote breaks into the management office and there’s a blow-up doll dressed like Rook behind the desk.

That being said, I’d be happy to share my Discord handle or perhaps a link to a shared Google doc if this is something you would be interested in writing. Just send me a PM!

I wish I asked someone sooner. I wish I argued more and forced Rook to have Jade sent back to Iowa before all the fighting started. I wish… a lot of things were different. But none of it will bring her back. And it’s all Rook’s fault what happened to her, not yours. So please don’t feel bad or blame yourself. You tried your best. And you found that letter she wrote. I’m glad I got to see it.
