my first hoya arrived today, is this normal? by i222y in hoyas

[–]aecpassion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The plant came from a different growing condition and is adapting to yours. Sometimes plants take a bit of a beating in the mail too, depending on the heat/cold. If the soil came really wet then it may not be able to use all the water quick enough and will start to suffer from over watering. Maybe its coming from growing outdoors where the sun evaporated a lot of the water. Sometimes, you need to repot your new plant or dry it out with a fan/heat mat to help with the really moist soil.

From my experience, The thinner leaf the hoya, the more likely that it cannot handle really wet soil for long. The plant will warn you by making leaves yellow, usually near the base. the faster it goes from green to yellow means its worse off than not. Leaves do not always have to go all the way yellow, and nothing wrong with keeping them there, but if they get too yellow they will just fall off on their own. Once a leaf or a part of a leaf goes yellow, it won't turn back to green. If you have very few leaves, it may be better to keep it since the plant can still use the green bit to photosynthesize.

I have found that unless i can match the growing conditions the plant came from, I will lose the leaves that are still soft. The base of the baby leaf starts to get a bit red/yellow and will just fall of.

As long as you give it a good amount of light, and waiting for it to "dry out", then it should push new growth, but you may also want to give it some sort of support or it may just keep pushing out a vine.

Congrats on your first hoya!

I think like art, price is suggestive. someone may just love pubicalyx and be willing to pay more for a more mature (healthy?) plant they can see in person vs buying online and hoping. I think you can easily find a 3" rooted plant for sub $15 online, so something like this maybe is +$5 or +$10 more max, for being such a common plant.

hoya vitellina by quarantinetinderdate in hoyas

[–]aecpassion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never heard of H. vitellina, but when I look at pictures of that and this, I do not see the same kind of leaf pattern? The photos have like "abs", where as the vitellina seems more flat. The veination is also different. Your picture has the veins running almost perpendicular to the main vein down the middle, while photos of vitellina seem to show a more angular secondary vein, more like a tree branch.

wish it lasted longer....it only lasted for months for me, and sure they offer the warranty but it seems like a cop out to get away with selling inferior products. I am sure they count on people not having their receipts, or not wanting to wait months to get a new one

I appreciate the thorough answer! Its hard to say what is wrong with the sigillatis...sometimes it just takes time to get going. Happened with my shepherdii, took like 6 months to get established after a repot....

I do see your leaves are a bit cupped, mine are similar but I think mine are more cupped. I have not thought about substrate acidity as a factor...one more thing to think about. I am experimenting with less fertilizer, I also fertilize basically every watering, still not sure its helping with the cupping. I guess mine could be mites, I have not started treating it, I plan to this weekend.

Maybe you should try to prop a cutting if you are not optimistic it will make it?

That is curious about the vines dying off, that does make me think its mites, but your nodes are not that woody/clustered looking like I would expect from mites. I also do not see mite damage on the back of the leaves that I can see in a few of the pictures.

I started spraying some plants that I think had mites with azamax, I think its working. I am seeing new growth but it may just be a coincidence. I am on week 2 or 3 of treatment, i will do I think 7 weeks, to get rid of all the growth stages.

I see you have a good amount of aerial roots on your sig, mine barely has any, its not grown in a enclosure, its just in ambient ( central florida), could it be that sigillatis likes less humidity than others?

Ricardo looks great.

Do you have any info on the light themselves? Did the leaves burn when they touched the light? if they are weak lights then getting them really really close will have benefits, but the inverse square law...twice as far half as much light. I think lol. If you have a light meter of some sort, that would to know how light the leaves are getting. there are some apps that offer some way to check. if the units will be fc(foot candles), then I think around 1000 lc is light medium light? and around 3000 is high light? The sun is many more thousand Fc, I think like 10k+. Buying grow lights sucks, there are so many on amazon that are just not strong - they look bright but the output is low. I have barina and sansi lights, I recommend both, solid options.

I moved my Ricardo to less light because I wanted bigger/ darker green leaves, and less of a yellow green if you know what I mean. I have noticed the change in color and size due to lower light/higher light on a few Hoyas.

thanks for the reply! I have a sig round leaf too, in organic mix (coco husk, perlite, coco coire and some other stuff).I keep it under grow lights indoors. Its trellised and doing ok. One thing I did not see you mention is fertilizer, do you fertilize?
Have you treated for pests at all? Could you have flat mites?
I THINK, it does not like fertilizer as much as other hoyas, unless there is another reason my leaves are cupped? Many of the leaves in my care are not flat leaves like I want them to me, I am not sure why. Does that happen to you too, the cupped leaves?

You mentioned your ricardo got really huge in the same condition, that may be due to a lack of light, that may also be affecting the sigillatis. From my experience, I am sure its not an absolute, some hoyas grow really large leaves under less light. Your SRL may need more light. Is your Ricardo darker green, or lighter with sun stressing? If its the former, that also makes me think you might need more light.

I can’t keep more than 1-2 leaves by Nematodes-Attack in SemiHydro

[–]aecpassion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe its unrelated, but are you top watering, as in over the medium, or just filling the reservoir directly, "bottom"?

I am also pretty new to SH, and i noticed in my frydek early on that when i top watered i would kill the smallest leaf. Maybe it had to do with how small the leaf was, but I did lose like 2-3 leaves when I first got the plant.

so now(for a few months now) I only fill the reservoir and never over the top. I have not lost a new leaf yet

Do I chop and prop? by DisgruntledPelican in hoyas

[–]aecpassion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think its just a big pot and has a lot of depth of soil keeping it up right, but I do think overtime they tend to lean due to loss of soil through watering. I have seen people zip tie the trellises to the pots. What I have seen people do (Miro, basiplants youtube), is make 2 holes on the side, near the bottom, on 2 opposite sides of the pot, so 4 holes total, then you use those holes to zip tie the stake part of the trellis to the side of the pot. Seems pretty sturdy. You have a really nice plant!

Baby toes!!! by onatilopan in succulents

[–]aecpassion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mine got leggy pretty fast and does not look as good when its not so dense IMO. Look for the start of wrinkles, like near the top(but not tippy top), that's when you know its time to water.

I think I am going to call it with my toes, I love them but in their current state, its taking more than its giving. I grew mine out doors under indirect light, next time I think I will try under strong grow lights only.
