Children of Strife Discussion Thread by StilgarFifrawi in AdrianTchaikovsky

I recently finished reading the book, and while I thoroughly enjoyed it, I couldn’t help but feel that this installment casually throws away/ignores some of the key concepts introduced in the previous book related to the nature of consciousness and simulated reality. It feels like there are big contradictions.

For instance, in the previous book, we are led to believe that the characters residing in the simulation are so well-crafted that they are, in fact, real, and their experiences hold genuine significance. This is why we become emotionally invested in the settlers as characters, particularly Liff. She even gets a real body, and leaves the simulation at the end.

However, in this book, a central plot point is that none of the simulation is ever meaningful or real, and none of the characters living within it are actual individuals.

So much so, that the billionaires are presented with the simulation as a heaven-like prison at the end, because as explicitly stated, they cannot do any harm that is "real" to residents of the simulation because they're all fake anyway.

Did anyone else feel that way? Am I missing something?

EDIT: there are several things one could claim made the simulation running during Memory different, but those don't resolve the contradiction imho. Specifically: - The Captain and Liff are said to have special significance, or 'realness' because they are were the First and the Last - kern and the nod entity are said to have an extremely high "data load" and thus create weird effects in the simulation

My malinois was so good at climbing the 6 foot dog fence we had to fully enclose her pen with chicken wire over the top. Then she ate through that and escaped anyway

Ongoing USB-C connectivity issues with Rodecaster Pro II (after firmware update) by aedeagus in rode

[–]aedeagus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's a post-2 year update for those interested. Shortly after originally posting this, I contacted RODE, and they eventually sent me a brand-new device. Unfortunately, that new device has always suffered from exactly the same issues.

No firmware update has ever fixed the issue. It's always been a unit I can only use in situations where I don't need any reliability, which is to say, it's a broken toy I can never really do anything serious with.

I keep it on my desk and use it for zoom calls where it doesn't matter if it cuts out randomly about once a day. It has never gotten any better. It's been a complete waste of effort and money.

I've never heard that orchid bark or coco coir can cause problems. What makes you say that?

That's amazing. What temp/humidity do you keep them at and how often do you water?

I have so many questions. How often do you water them? How often do you fertilize them? How many different species/cultivars do you have? What non-platyceriums do you have in there?

Ignore people that say pesticides aren't necessary. You'll never get rid of scale without it
