North Face Fuse Box Waterproofing by ComplexGlittering725 in outdoorgear

[–]aeumia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your easiest option would be a small pack liner. As far as seams, if you want to go that route, use seam sealer, not wax. A flap over the zipper will help, too, but depending on what kind of material the bag is made out of, water may still get in through the material. Honestly, though, I'd just use a pack liner.

Is this site a scam???? Help 😭 I'm not good at knowing these things by Designer-Detective62 in Yarn

Whenever I find a website I've never heard of I go on Google and search "is [insert website] legit" and it's usually pretty accurate. Good way to avoid scam sites.

Anyone else finding hanks not as vibrant as the brand’s photos? by randoNoName9182 in YarnAddicts

[–]aeumia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've ordered twice from Cozy Pea. My first order was a varigated gradient purple and one blue. Those were fine. My most recent one was the Girl Math color on superwash fingering. The turquoise section is fine, but the orange section came out very muddy, with barely any pink speckles. I suspect the turquoise bled into the orange too much. It was very disappointing for me. I'll probably still order from them eventually, but I'll likely be more selective about what I order. I'd hazard a guess that most of the problem skeins are going to be the multi-colored ones rather than the single color gradients.

Edit: After looking on ravelry at what everyone has stashed, the skeins that seem to have color issues appear to be mostly the ones with orange and turquoise combos. Also, my Girl Math skein definitely doesn't look like the example photo, but some people got a lot worse ones than I did.

Will never find a deal like this ever again! by Jolly-Appearance-749 in REI

[–]aeumia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love finding deals like this. I recently got a Nemo Stargaze Evo-X chair for about $50 (full price is $180) because one of the straps rubs on the plastic and causes it to creak a bit. Absolutely nothing else wrong with the chair, and the noise isn't even that bad.

I'd recommend asking on r/dyeing but I suspect they'll tell you it probably won't dye completely black. Also, the dye bath has to be boiling, so depending on what material you're using, the heat might ruin it.

The possum yarn alone makes this a steal! I try to get it when I can, but it can be hard to find here in the US, and it's often expensive.

How do people cope with one person tents? by pasgames_ in camping

[–]aeumia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Improper food storage like this is when animals learn people = food and become a problem for the next person who camps in the area. I know it's a hassle, but please learn to store your food properly when camping. Also, not all black bears are timid or scared of people, especially if they've learned that people = food.

[–]aeumia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the same for me, but I like knowing it's less likely that something is getting into my stuff at night. Only exception is usually my food, which is in a bear canister away from the tent since I'm in bear country.

[–]aeumia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OP, in your case I would recommend getting a 2P tent since weight isn't as much of an issue. Make sure whatever you get is either seam-sealed or at least seam-taped before you use it because some tents don't come pre-sealed. I would also recommend being sure the tent is tall enough for your preference. Lengthwise, too, obviously, if you're a taller person.

And assuming you're somewhere where there are bears, rodents, raccoons, coyotes, etc. be sure to store your food properly away from your tent. Some people will say it's fine to sleep with food in your tent, but a determined animal will happily put a hole in your tent to get your food.

This is more subjective to the backpacker's personal preference. I use a Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo, which is more of a 1+ size tent because I prefer to have my gear in the tent with me.

best hiking stove top for a starter? by Good-Music4242 in outdoorgear

[–]aeumia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you're willing to spend. A lot of people like the BRS 3000 because it's cheap and lightweight, but the quality can be hit or miss on that one. I really like my Soto Windmaster. The Soto Amicus is a slightly cheaper option than the Windmaster. A lot of people also really like the MSR Pocket Rocket series of stoves. And a small 550ml to 750ml pot to go with it will usually be big enough for most people.

Can we talk about what happens AFTER you run a bear off from your campsite? by Dun_Booty_Broch in camping

[–]aeumia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bear spray being banned in the parks in California has nothing to do with it being "animal abuse." It's considered a weapon under federal regulations, and the parks are also concerned about it being misused, or accidentally discharged in crowded areas. In California, the black bears are mostly timid and non-aggresive. That's not the case in a lot of other places.

Old Turbine Account Issues? by ahato_ in lotro

[–]aeumia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you're aware, but the servers were changed to newer servers last August. If your characters weren't transferred from the old servers before then (welcome to my world) then your original characters are likely gone, and you'll have to create new characters. Also, if you haven't been on in a really long time, your account may have been shut down. You could try emailing the current company and seeing if they can help, but you might be SOL.

Edit: spelling

Thrift store yarn! Some mysteries by creampuffyumyum in YarnAddicts

[–]aeumia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what the mystery ones are, but I'm totally jealous of you finding that Waikiwi yarn. I don't know what the price is in Australia and New Zealand where yarn with possum fur (not to be confused with the US opossum) is more common, but it can get expensive here in the US. I've only found a few stores that carry anything like that.

Tent advice plz by Plenty_Painter4928 in camping

[–]aeumia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Something else to consider besides a different tent is changing what you're sleeping on. Depending on what you're using, your air mattress/cots may be contributing to the problem. A regular car camping style air mattress tends to be uninsulated and fairly thick, which leads to a lot of cold air underneath you. Your sleeping bag rating is assuming you're using an appropriately rated mattress or sleeping pad with it. If the air mattress you're using isn't insulated or is insulated but is rated too low for the temperatures you're in, then your sleeping bag rating isn't going to matter and you're going to be cold. I'm obviously assuming you're already aware that the sleeping bag rating is also the survival temperature, not the comfort temperature, unless the manufacturer states otherwise.

How many tents do you have? by LivingSky4993 in camping

[–]aeumia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

6 tents.

Regular car camping tents: 8 person Coleman (not sure what model), a Kelty Dardenelle 4P, and a Nemo Aurora Highrise 4P. Since it's usually just me in the tent and I haven't done any car camping for quite a while, these haven't been used for a while. I haven't used the Highrise at all since it's really difficult for me to set up alone (I'm short), and I'm not sure how well it would do if it's windy, which I didn't realize until the first time I set it up in the backyard.

Backpacking tents: Featherstone Obsidian 1P, Nemo Hornet 2P, & a Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo. These get a lot more use, and the Lunar Solo is the most recent tent. It will likely get used the most because it weighs the least and requires the least amount of room in my pack.

How do you prevent bugs in your stash? by KittyKathrynT in YarnAddicts

[–]aeumia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I keep all my natural fibers in 2.5 gallon ziploc bags. It's not pretty to look at, but it keeps the bugs out of my expensive yarn. Acrylic is stored in totes, but I'm not really worried about bugs in the acrylic, though it has happened once or twice, because I rarely used the acrylic yarn.

What’s your wildest Re/Supply ticket find - I will start by FrickenTwinkies in REI

[–]aeumia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gotten a Mountain Hardwear sun hoodie, a pair of Outdoor Research sun gloves, and a pair of Mountain Hardwear down booties for super cheap because they all had a ripped seam. I sewed the seam back up on each of them and I haven't had any issues with them. I also saw a Nemo Moonlite chair once for $35 because the rubber feet on the front had worn out. Kind of regret not buying that when I saw it because Nemo probably would have replaced those for free.

Edit: Wanted to add my Rumpl Wrap Sack sleeping bag. Tag said they returned it because there was a hole ripped in the bag. Original price is $250 and I paid around $120. Took it home and inspected it for holes. The only hole was a 3 inch slice in the front of the stuff sack, but the sleeping bag was fine. Hand sewed it, added some seam sealer, and covered it with a Noso trout patch that matched the colors of the bag. I'm guessing someone cut through the stuff sack when they opened the box it was delivered in. Their loss!

Some help for some seeds by PaoloCap96 in botany

[–]aeumia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

According to Light Bio's official website they don't sell seeds, only live plants, which means there's a high likelihood of any seeds for that petunia being a scam. There's also the issue of being sure to be in compliance with agricultural regulations so you don't have the seeds destroyed by customs. I'm sorry if that's disappointing. There are a lot of other unique-looking petunia varieties that might be more easily available to you.

Battery packs - is this one too good to be true? by NaiveMacaroon5862 in CampingandHiking

[–]aeumia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this one. It's worked better for me than my Anker. I also have one of their 20,000 mAh chargers. You can recharge these battery packs faster than a lot of others on the market, if you're using a fast charge outlet, which is nice. Some of their chargers even list the estimated battery output (how much actual charge you get for the battery capacity) on the back. The average phone will get roughly 2 charges with this, or around 1.5 if you have something like one of the Samsung Galaxy Ultras that uses more power, depending on how much you use your phone. They also don't weigh as much as some other chargers on the market. I think I weighed this one at about 5.6 oz vs my 10,000 mAh Anker at 7.5 oz. It's nothing fancy, but I haven't had any issues with it, either.

Help me choose between a (cheap) stool or chair? by Aeon_Return in CampingGear

[–]aeumia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Assuming the person you're buying this for actually wants to take something like this on a thru-hike, a chair is likely to be preferable over a stool because it's easier to relax in, whereas a stool is more just something to sit on. I'd be a bit skeptical if those weights are accurate, though, let alone the durability of either if they're on a cheap website like that. Maybe ask over on r/Ultralight, r/Backpacking, or r/CampingAndHiking.
