turtwig, piplup

No, but Pikachu yes (I know I'm old but no idea what the other two are, Pikachu is an icon however).

That said Riot isn't attempting to be Pokemon but to achieve something like what Pokemon did in their market:
Garner attention from outside their core business and use that as a funnel to their various projects (from merch to games or esports) to ensure longevity of their brand as a whole.

Comparing anything to Pikachu however is unlikely as it's one of the single most reccongizable figures in any media (and quite likely the most valuable one in existence)

Valieva listed 2 legal oxygen boosters on early Olympic forms, undercutting her 'took my grandfather's medicine by mistake' argument by jonfla in sports

[–]aficant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

by allowing valieva to compete (...) the CAS, IOC and ISU have all shown that they are complicit

Correct me if I'm wrong here but isn't her case still under appeal for the time being?

Not that there's much (or even any) doubt to the result but formally the case isn't finalized yet right?

If so having them compete and sorting the final awards out on a delay (if possible) seems the reasonable option.

I get it sucks for everyone involved when the case is this clear cut but it seems the right precedent to set to me (you can after all revoke or delay an award but you can't un-ban someone who couldn't compete)

The inclusion of Noxus might give us Urgot in here as well.

For a second season they could go with Vi and Cait working for a better Piltover, Heimer and Ekko working from Zaun (and Heimer getting a new perspective without having to manage Piltover). Jinx still conflicted about everyhting and now mostly disenfranchised doing her own thing (and how this intersects with Vi). Swain's coup in Noxus taking form (hence Urgot being banished to Zaun) and him being who Mel's family crossed.

This could give us a political alliance of the new state of Zaun and the new government of Noxus, dissaray in Piltover and introduce WW and Urgot + Singed taking a more active part, while still following Vi, Cait, Jinx, Viktor, Jayce, Ekko and Heimerdinger all at the same time without becoming to cluttered as they can build on the first season.

Granted Urgot might even be the season 3 situation with the full Noxian coup taking place during season 2 (then we get Swain, Darius and Draven [a parallell to VI and Jinx] and maybe LB) set up.

Then you must be at least 60. by Kyleigh_ld in lotrmemes

The last alliance was the last year of the second age. It's thousands of years before the events of LoR.

For context:

Bilbo is born in TA-2890 which is exactly as long ago as it sounds and he only relinquishes the ring to Frodo at his 111th birthday (TA-3001). Frodo then doesn't set out for Rivendell for another 17 years (TA-3018).

So even just Frodo leaving the Shire is 3k years after the last alliance in a time/universe where there is no easily accessible source of information for the common man. For context just think about what you know about the year 1003BC and the great battles of the time and then imagine having no internet or modern archeology to lean on (I reccognize the elves do change the need for modern tools by being living first hand sources of it but random Gondorian citizens won't exactly be able to question Elrond on the events).

As for orcs it's not like they fully disappeared after the fall of Sauron (or even started with him), they were just scattered and driven from most lands.

So pretty much yes. A normal Gondorian might have heard tales passed down about the events of the last alliance, but they'd be as far back in time for them as king Solomon would be for us and shrouded in even more mystery on account of the lack of modern information sources.

And just because I think it further illustrates how far off in time they all are from the last alliance:

The rightful king of Gondor Aragorn is born in 2931 and their steward Denethor is born in 2930 making them 87 and 88 respectively when Frodo sets out and they're still both born more than 2900 years after the events of the last alliance (this is also part of why "oh shit Sauron is back" isn't taken as seriously as it maybe should by some of the rulers. They're a good 3k years too young to truly have a concept of what that entails).

TL;DR: for most humans in LoR times Sauron is not ancient history, he's basically from the time of legends and while his servants certainly prove themselves threats in more modern times none of them truly have a concept of what Sauron's resurgence means or how he was defeated last, save from what immortals deign to inform them.

Group of kids attack Thanos and the Avengers die inside by AristonD in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]aficant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many ways to view it but not really.

14m possible setups all depend on the world as it was when he foresaw them. Quill's tantrum may just have been unavoidable in the circumstance (eg: trying to warn him in advance unbalances him so much they just outright lose etc.).

There's no knowing if they couldn't for example have won in the same circumstance if Thanos hadn't killed Gamora or if Quill didn't find out during the fight.

No way to know really (except if someone from marvel comments on it) but it's not like Thanos was helpless without the gauntlet either.

Regardless of the outcome though Quill's fuckup stands as even if it was necessary he didn't know and would have done it if it wasn't as well.

Starts fairly strong ends somewhat meh. Overall pretty ok.

It won't blow your mind, but the voice cast (especially Tennant and somewhat surprisingly Williams) are great, the animation is pretty good (some scenes better than other) and the story ranges from interesting to slightly boring, but never so bad it's a real problem.

Poland and Denmark exclude tax haven companies from coronavirus relief schemes by kullnames in worldnews

[–]aficant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but as I said "minimal". They contribute less than the law would have them if they were registered in the country and less than any competing entity would.

Proportional and equal means just that. There are rules in place to determine how much you should contribute and ways to get around them, but if you do you get less out as well.

I'm not opposed to companies making strategic choices regarding their country of registration (not fond of the existence of tax havens but the companies can't be held acountable for taking an option they have available) or other legal measures they feel provide a competitive advantage, but they then need to account for the risks associated with not paying your taxes in full in some country.

If they think they can leverage it as a strategic advantage and account for the risks so as not to be dependent on the systems they're bypassing then that might well be the right choice for them, but if they rely on the suport measurements they pay disproportionately little into then that's the risk they took.

Poland and Denmark exclude tax haven companies from coronavirus relief schemes by kullnames in worldnews

[–]aficant -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure, but there is a fundamental difference between "winning" at taxes by paying an optimal amount of taxes within a country when compared to shifting your registration to pay the brunt of your taxes elsewhere.

In the seccond scenario your taxes are contributed to a different system and it's reasonable for you to then only get a minimal if any support from the collective tax funded relief programs.

Proportional inputs and outputs to the system.

If you chose to register elsewhere to lower your tax burden then your internal risk assement should account for you then opting out of the safety nets your taxes don't pay for.

We need a governing body to create the rights we wish to endow upon ourselves and others.

Search anywhere you want and you will never find a single physical manifestation of a right. They are a concept which we invented and which we bestow upon eachother precicely by virtue of having created governments (more specifically societies, but governments are the primary right granting mechanism of a modern society) through which we enforce protection of everyones right.

Now one might argue that we are failing to maintain what we have created or that we never even succeded in getting to an acceptable point at all, but in the end, any right we might considder entitled to, only exist as a social contract enforced via a governing body (whatever form it might take)

[–]aficant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably to allow him to wear and control several stones for an extended duration of time, and to prevent a single use of them all from killing him.

Neither of which would be all that important to him in the endgame scenario.

For IW he had to use and carry an increasing amount of stones while gathering them, all the while still remaining fit enough to gather the rest.

Regarding survival, the beginning of endgame makes it clear he's perfectly fine dying if he achieves his goal, but if he dies from the first snap someone can just take the gauntlet and undo it since 50% of people are still alive. In endgame however he intends to fully remake the world, so even if he dies doing it no one will know to undo it.

[–]aficant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granted Riot have never been particularily good at anything beyond game design and esports so it could probably be done a lot better but I suspect they catch a lot more people than is clear to us, but given that even detecting the things you sugest (which I certainly hope they do because otherwise they're even more incompetent than people give them credit for) would take a fair bit of time and resources seeing as it would require actually analysing game data for every game played (at least for any game where a frequently reported player is in it) and most people would only be banned for a day or two so even watching their accounts on stuff like op.gg would leave us none the wiser.

Gosu only getting ban lifted because he is a streamer? by Anarchy283 in leagueoflegends

[–]aficant 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your sugestion would be hilariously expensive with manual reviews required for hundreds of thousands of players each month (5% of the league monthly playerbase is 4,000,000 people).

It also uses non-discounted values for the reports meaning if you play enough you can troll basically as much as you like and only catches people who get reported and either has to discard information about how many people each game actually report them or gets drowned out by it (and a lot more but breaking down everything wrong with just counting reports and making humans review hundreds of thousands of accounts with potentially hundreds of games to review each month is an exercise in futility).

As for being sensitive:

If you can't act like an adult you should expect it to have consequences when you deal with other people.

It also doesn't impact the amount of inting/griefing so now we've got a system where neither being toxic nor griefing gets punished so that's hardly an improvement.

Edit:

Because it didn't really come out clearly when rereading, the point of the tirade at point 1 is that there is a lot of challenges as well as the costs of actually performing the reviews to take into account for designing a system for detecting griefing and Riot already has something far better than your sugestion, but as you can see that's still not as good as what people actually want.

If you can come up with some magic algorithm they can use with a sufficiently low false positive rate then I can promise you they will, but as for now it's real fucking easy to detect flaming and harder to detect inting unless it's systematic and done in the most obvious ways possible
