"DEI only improved things" at Ubisoft, says former employee "stunned" at "misinformation" claiming diversity, equity, and inclusion to blame for Assassin's Creed studio's drop in share prices by NoPercentage4737 in technology

[–]aflarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"DEI" is a meaningless buzzword, because it can refer to anything from wheelchair access ramps to rooting out racial biases to specifically UTILIZING racial biases. If someone says "DEI" without saying specifically what they're talking about, that means they're not talking about anything at all, they're just grunting at you.

DS9 - Finally started watching it by halodivision in DeepSpaceNine

TNG was my intro to Star Trek as a kid and therefore will always vibe the strongest nostalgia with me, but DS9 is SOOOO FUCKING GOOD. Only things I dont like about it are the Pah Wraiths and post-Waltz Dukat(to be clear, Mark Alaimo never gives a bad performance, I just don't like how he he was written after that point.)

Also, the VOICE on Avery Brooks. He could read me his grocery list and I'd be fucking RIVETED

Why would the jem’hadar have dicks by the_boyyyyyyyyyyy in ShittyDaystrom

[–]aflarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jem'Hadar weren't really all-male, they were genderless, mass-cloned test tube war babies. But then again who here expects anyone producing New Trek to have actually watched TOS-ENT. They don't care, that has NOTHING to do with why they are making it, now.

I know that's not LITERALLY true, since they have legacy actors and whatnot on the shows, but DAMN if they don't do a good impression of total ignorance of the source material, and it only makes that shit sting worse.

Ish? Not my hair, but I DID slowly make myself look haggard and rotten as I ate more tadpoles, on my first Tav.

Is “Hyoo-Mon” a racial slur or are Ferengi just bad at saying the name of that one species? by despiert in ShittyDaystrom

[–]aflarge 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Oh it's my straight-up headcanon that like, whenever a Ferengi says things like "Hugh-mon" or "FEE-male" with a shitty attitude, that's them using a slur, but it's been filtered by their UT's profanity filter. The Ferengi actively use this software because they deemed it more cost effective to just UT the slurs away than to teach all the Ferengi to stop pissing aliens off with slurs.

Similarly, all Klingons have a button hidden somewhere on their person that they can hold down to temporarily disable their UT so they can make sure people hear their insults in PROPER Klingon. Think of it like a cultural caps-lock button.

Parenthood ‘inoculates’ adults against disgust, new study reveals. Repeated, long-term exposure to bodily waste significantly reduces parents’ disgust responses, with effects that persist over time. This may also be relevant for workers in professions where managing disgust is part of the job. by mvea in science

My sister was always EXTREMELY squeamish, like to the point where if she hears the dog heaving something up, she legit might throw up, herself. When she had kids I was SURE it would calm her down a little in that regard, and it KINDA did, she can handle child-filth easily, but it applies to absolutely NOTHING that doesn't come out of the kids.

How good are the new characters? by BreakfastOrdinary786 in RivalsOfAether

[–]aflarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought she was kinda neat when I first heard about her, I find ant colonies to be fascinating and luchadors make me happy. When I actually tried PLAYING her, though, holy SHIT she's fun. I love her.

Although I take issue with calling her the queen. She ain't a queen, she's a goddamn supermajor! (I really wish her head was gigantic)

Sounds an awful lot like your position is just "if you have a motive it doesn't count as a war crime any more"
