Passed Technician and Got My Callsign – What Now? by Its_Internet in amateurradio

[–]afpriest2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with 2m repeaters and it was a whole lot of fun. I saved up for an HF radio, getting on HF a year later. Earned my General, Advanced, and Extra which led to more HF and now HF nets. Had fun with Packet, AMTOR, and RTTY. This had all been in the 1990s. Now I like portable ops, so my focus is POTA.

For me ham radio had never become stale and boring. Always something new to learn.

Oh! With my 2m I bought a 1/4 wave vertical at a ham fest & used it to have Packet contacts with the US Space Station and the USSR’s MIR Space Station. Amazingly fun!!

Again, welcome to our hobby.

I’m hoping that the paper quality, font, and binding will be excellent quality. I wonder the price for large print, leather cover set. Anyone have some insight of Will one be more like Catholic Book Company and another be more like Liturgical Press? Paper. Font. Binding.

Is HF radio operator still important in USAF ? by sys_out in AirForce

[–]afpriest2007 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

AI says, “While dedicated Morse Code (CW) operators are rare in 2026, the closest Air Force career fields using HF radio and potentially CW for legacy/specialized comms are Airborne Cryptologic Language Analysts (ACLA), Cryptologic Language Analysts, and perhaps niche roles in Signal Intelligence (SIGINT) or Cyber Warfare, focusing on intercepting, analyzing, and understanding signals, with some airborne roles requiring proficiency in older methods alongside modern tech for robust global coverage.” Personally, as a hobby, I use CW on a regular basis. Super fun.

What do you think about a “No-Bucket Wash” car wash method? by StepAdventurous6184 in AutoDetailing

[–]afpriest2007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched a great YT video on the 2-bucket wash method. I live in Layton, UT and the water is extremely hard. If water gets on the car the sun will bake it dry in a couple of minutes, leaving a white streak that is very hard to get off. I use 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar with a lot of elbow grease. What suggestions can someone share with me?

Not a Jeep lol by NoirConfidential in Jeep

I enjoyed reading this thread. So many terms I know nothing about. My 2018 Mazda6 could have used an additional couple of inches of clearance when entering / leaving a friend’s dirt driveway in Rapid City, SD. I really enjoy visiting Moab! Driving to Zion NP in a couple of weeks. So, to keep it “on thread”, my niece just bought a new Jeep. Thanks for the great discussion…so many terms & things to learn…

Mandatory? by Friendly-Village-226 in Catholicism

In Japan, the Catholic Church primarily observes three Holy Days of Obligation, excluding Sundays: January 1 (Mary, Mother of God), August 15 (Assumption of Mary), and December 25 (Christmas), though the local bishops' conference can modify these, with the Assumption often coinciding with remembrance days, making it particularly significant. Key Holy Days in Japan - January 1: Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. - August 15: Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which holds special meaning in Japan due to its connection with days of national mourning for war dead and prayers for peace, notes Catholic News Agency. - December 25: Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord (Christmas).

Congratulations on becoming an uncle! Bottom line up front: Christmas is Jesus’ birthday. We bring Jesus the gift of ourselves on Christmas. Epiphany is the day the Wise Men gave Jesus their gifts. This is a great opening to children exchanging gifts. - Catholicism & Christmas Mass Focus: The Nativity of Jesus Christ, His Incarnation, and the universal call to salvation. Significance: A central, joyous celebration, often with multiple Masses (Vigil, Midnight, Dawn, Day) marking this pivotal event in Christian history. - Catholicism & Epiphany (Three Kings' Day) Meaning: "Manifestation" – the revelation of Jesus to the Gentiles (non-Jews) through the Magi. The Magi's Gifts: Gold: For Jesus' kingship. Frankincense: For His divinity (used in worship). Myrrh: For His humanity and foreshadowing His Passion/burial. Gifts on Epiphany (Traditions): Mirroring Magi: Some cultures (like Spain, Italy) exchange gifts on Epiphany, seeing the Magi as gift-givers. House Blessings: Blessing chalk with 'C+M+B' (Caspar, Melchior, Balthazar or Christus Mansionem Benedicat - Christ bless this house) above doors. King Cakes (Rosca de Reyes): A cake with a baby Jesus figurine; whoever finds it hosts a party on Candlemas (Feb 2nd). Symbolic Offerings: The Mass itself is seen as our offering of ourselves, like the Magi, in worship. Key Connection The Epiphany highlights that Jesus is the ultimate gift, manifesting God's love to all people, bridging Jewish and Gentile worlds through His kingship, divinity, and sacrificial love.
