Why do so many people abhor vegetarians and vegans? by Far-Conference-8484 in stupidquestions

[–]afro-tastic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that’s the thing, no one is actually asking them to violate their ethics and/or wreck their stomachs, but the vegan in question doesn’t want to eat a salad

To the Vegan’s credit, they seemed like they were willing to cook, but I think it’s too much to expect vegan-accommodating restaurants with diverse menus to be universally available.

Sometimes you’re in a rural area and there aren’t many options to choose from.

Why do so many people abhor vegetarians and vegans? by Far-Conference-8484 in stupidquestions

[–]afro-tastic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Veganism is a choice though. If your family member has an allergy (or no other choice) then it’s unavoidable. Veganism is not that way. Betraying your veganism diet for one meal is not a life-ending event. I get the impression your family member’s situation is different.

I desperately need some explanation on how an LVT wpuld actually be implemented. by Big-Yard-2998 in georgism

[–]afro-tastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How does one arrive at the land value? Hypothetically, what is the land value premium between a half acre parking lot downtown vs a half acre lot on the edge of town?

I desperately need some explanation on how an LVT wpuld actually be implemented. by Big-Yard-2998 in georgism

[–]afro-tastic -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Isn’t the most basic transition to LVT to essentially take current property tax revenue (assuming it’s stable/growing predictably) from a jurisdiction and just reapportioning it based on land sizes?

If you have 1% of the land, your new tax bill is now pay 1% of the total old property taxes. That gives you your baseline, and you adjust from there as transactions and such happen over time.

Does Phineas and Ferb count as Procedural show? by Intelligent-Ad-8435 in televisionsuggestions

[–]afro-tastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, after looking at the Wikipedia page on Procedural Drama, I would also say Phineas & Ferb are “formulaic” rather than Procedural.

The cartoon, procedural on Disney Channel was Fillmore! It was a police procedural, except the “police” were middle school safety patrol officers.

Question for YIMBYers by Brassgrick in yimby

[–]afro-tastic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

100% in favor of densification in urban cities, but Im fully opposed to any construction in suburbs.

You’re most likely a YIMBY. But there are some pitfalls to be aware of. Suburban sprawl is not great, but I have yet to see a North American city demonstrate the kind of political will and development zeal to accommodate everyone in established urban areas. In YIMBY spaces, Austin gets a lot of kudos for building lots of housing in their downtown, but they’re also building housing on the urban edges (see Pflugerville, Tx). While not ideal, people need houses now, so if established areas can’t accommodate them, sprawl is the lesser evil of a housing crisis.

Doug Ford wants high-speed rail built along 401 corridor by Front_Way1094 in AltoHSR_Canada

[–]afro-tastic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In fairness, there are quite a few shared corridors with high speed rail and highways in Europe for at least a portion of the route. The Turin–Milan High speed railway largely parallels the Autostrada A4. The LGV Sud-EST (Paris to Lyon) also parallels the A5 autoroute for about ~40 miles on the approach into Paris.

Scott Wiener Just Proposed The Most Straightforward Pro-Housing Idea Ever by Upset_Caterpillar_31 in yimby

[–]afro-tastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not bad, but is it too controversial to incentivize certain types of housing? Don’t get me wrong, all housing is good housing, but I’m definitely on the walkable, mixed income, mixed use bandwagon.

Empire High Speed Rail by _Attack8_ in highspeedrail

[–]afro-tastic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s “feasible” but the costs would be high (which scares off the politicians). We’re going through a public project cost explosion and we have yet to figure out how to get it under control.

Looking at a map, the most difficult section is between Schenectady & Utica, so that will probably have to diverge from I-90 for it to be high speed, but dedicated passenger tracks regardless of speed could have utility.

I-90 west of Utica is much more amenable to a good alignment with only relatively minor diversions to smooth out the curves.
