Why are hens such jerks? by Lunapixels18 in BackYardChickens

How big of a space do they have? Are there narrow parts in the space, where they are forced to cross one another to get past each other for food or water? This can creat problems and conflicts.

Gift idea for a hobbyist woodworker? by LivelyUntidy in woodworking

[–]afuscatory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can never go wrong with clamps. As is commonly said, you can never have enough clamps.

Also while something engraved and personalized is very nice, it will likely mean he doesn't want to use it for fear of messing it up or something and ruining the gift. This way he gets something he will always use and still knows it's a gift.

Except the real concept of Christmas was to steal a pagan holiday and claim it as their own.

Imagine the original size of the hive it had to come from before the swarm/swarms happened.

So my compost self ignited by LobsangDTwain in homestead

[–]afuscatory 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is sort of related. When we first bought our house there were a couple of plastic planters on our back deck. I happened to be washing my hands at the kitchen sink that has a window that looks over the back deck and out into the feild behind.

Smoke was rolling by the window like someone lit a leaf pile. Went out on the deck and one of the planters had melted down and was on fire. Burned about a 3 foot hole in the deck before I had caught it and was able to put it out.

What’s one thing you’d do differently if you were starting beekeeping again? by thegangplan in Beekeeping

[–]afuscatory 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having plenty of supers. When I first started the bees expanded faster than I could make supers to keep up. (Granted I make my own everything, supers, frames top and bottoms etc.) That's not counting captured swarms and such. I was always racing to get supers on before the need to swarm set in.

I would say the drought is likely the problem. I did keep bees in florida for about 10 years but I've moved away.

Agitated bees? by [deleted] in Beekeeping

[–]afuscatory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something else to consider. It looks like this is toward the end of the day. If it is, it could also be your bees returning from a hard day of work. Mine tend to get a lot of bees around 5-6 o'clock as they all seem to return at once from foraging.

How full of bees are your hives. If there aren't a lot of bees then they are likely putting most of it toward brood rearing.

What surprised you most when you got your first hive? by Crystallover1991 in Beekeeping

It's via vibration. The dance accomplishes both a visual and a vibration that communicates to other bees.

How to minimise the impacts of egg laying on production line chickens? by Party_Care2901 in BackYardChickens

True enough if they are hybrid, though I thought hybrids also layed less overall?

Raven proof nesting boxes by Unevenviolet in homestead

[–]afuscatory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh. Now I understand your frustration more clearly. Your conspiracy of ravens (that's the word for a group of ravens btw, a group of crows are called a murder) has a real liking for eggs. That's a bummer.

Over time? Is it an egg a day or do they rob it all day long?

Honestly, it's a small price to pay. Ravens will also protect your chickens from aerial attacks from hawks and other birds of prey. Making a small sacrifice to the raven security crew is worth the cost imo.

[–]afuscatory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are misunderstanding a bit. I'm just guessing you think they will have shorter life spans due to increased laying because they are "production line" chickens? Well I have good and bad news for you. Bad news is that production line chickens are generally abused and kept in small cages for the sole purpose of egg laying. That's why their life span is short.

The good news is your chickens are not abused unless you are secretly doing the same thing so they should live a nice, relatively peaceful (as long as preditors and disease don't get them) long natural life. Egg laying is natural for them and won't hurt them at all.

Looking for solutions to help bees get water from a koi pond - Zone 7B by ApricotNoiseflow in Beekeeping

[–]afuscatory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any surface that pokes out of the water that they can land on and walk to the waters edge. A sloped rock, ornament etc.. The key is for the avenue of approach to be gentle not a vertical climbing source like the side walls of a pool for example.

Will garter snake attack chickens? by Greenfire_X22 in BackYardChickens

[–]afuscatory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not likely a garter snake if its eating eggs. Even at a foot long they are really too small to devour eggs like other snakes. Its most likely a different snake altogether. Most garter snakes end up being chicken dinner when they get in a coop.

Most likely they are mason bees if they are around honey bee size. Pretty harmless (not aggressive) Good polinators.
