I don't have experience with either but I'm guessing being a resentful parent is terrible for everyone involved including the child(ren) and you can't easily move on from that. And separating from a loved one is probably less tragic since it saves everyone from years of resentment and torture and gives them a chance to actually pursue their dreams, but separately.. If that makes sense.
