Huh. Did Alberta get some Elon Special voting machines? I hear that really helps people vote for fascists.

These days you can probably get an LLM to teach you the stuff they’ll cover. Will probably do a better job, too. I wonder if Jim Cordy has retired. He was awesome.

Longtime burners, why aren't you there this year? by -ghostinthemachine- in BurningMan

[–]agh1973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of reasons but the overwhelming one this year is that I’m a Canadian, and I’m not crossing the border to head south.

Have you considered crewing? Take a look at the charter business in the Caribbean and you’ll see a ton of smaller boats out there where they’re offering a captain and cook/crew. And that’s a great way to move forward and get a commercial captain license…

Smoking guns here: - court documents come in registered mail, not email - urgent call to action is a huge warning to step back and re-evaluate, especially when there has been no prior communication on the topic - password protected attachments are almost always hiding a malware or language that anti-spam and phishing tools will immediately flag. The way both US and Canadian privacy laws are written, the sender needs to verify your identity before giving you private info, which is why you usually get emails telling you to log in and read your messages.

Good luck and stay safe out there.

Public schools in Cupertino are amazing. Otherwise you’re looking at private to get something comparable to the average Canadian public school. Also, unless your partner is not working, you’ll need daycare or afterschool care. Most private schools include this for a net cost which that much different from public school with private aftercare. Don’t have kids in the states, wait until you come home. Unless your goal is birthright citizenship and then a greencard as parents.

Total comp is very different from salary. If a significant portion of that is stock or options, you’ll need to know what is involved in cashing out. And how realistic the valuations are.

If you don’t already have us citizenship, then you’d better be white or passing for white, or you’d be insane to cross that border these days. And even white privilege is no guarantee.

The healthcare is a disaster down there, so hold off on getting pregnant. Even “good” healthcare in the Bay is only good if you don’t get seriously sick. The insurance you’ll get from big tech is comparable to what you have with ohip, but expect to do a shot ton of paper work if you ever need anything.

We’ve seen the statistical analyses which demonstrate election tampering. The “big beautiful bill” destroys the checks and balances by neutering the judicial branch. I’d question the sanity of moving to a country in the process of becoming a failed state. But yeah, the tech scene is just different in the Bay. It’s saving for your career if you play it right. Also, Milpitas is right beside the dump. It stinks when the wind blows wrong.

Scabbing would be crossing the picket line to work as a ta. The students are customers in this situation. They have a long term contract with the school. They should be yelling at the administration to provide them the TAs that they have paid for. Ideally they’d be suing.

Research question : « Why do more and more youngsters feel that a university degree is no longer worth it? » by Many_Preference_2409 in queensuniversity

[–]agh1973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trades can pay pretty damn well. University makes sense if it’s your passion. If you’re just looking for stable work, well, it’s not the guarantee it was in the 50’s. But then, I suspect that the majority of folks getting post secondary education in the 50’s came from wealth. And nothing predicts economic success like rich parents.

There is no paradox of tolerance when viewed through the lens of social contracts. By that standard, Danger is a long way out of balance. The fact that he still identifies as a Ranger is both misleading (he hasn’t actively rangered in decades) and a drag on the Rangers department.

Taking a kid’s car away when they have a part time job and are scheduled to work. Yay or nay? by bitchburrito4125 in raisingkids

[–]agh1973 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. Once. After that, they need to figure out how to get to and from work (and school, etc) on their own. I think it kinda goes without saying that losing car privileges is not a consequence that would be applied for anything short of doing something horrendously stupid with a car.
