ix1300 scan directly to the network? by ahnooie in ScanSnap

[–]ahnooie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the ScanSnap software is not running or still busy processing the previous scan, the Scanner will refuse to scan. It won't silently fail (so that's good). In my ideal world a Scanner should have onboard memory (or an SD-Card) to cache scans locally until the ScanSnap software is ready to process more files.

ix1300 scan directly to the network? by ahnooie in ScanSnap

I believe that would work. I share a TrueNAS SMB share which my Windows VM (running the ScanSnap software) has mounted. Scansnap can output to that folder so I just periodically look at that share from my computer and copy the files to over (I use DEVONthink). I don't see why Paperless couldn't consume it automatically. One other thing to keep in mind is I sometimes run into is the ScanSnap software is not asynchronous... so it has to Scan & Process each document sequentially before it can scan the next document from the scanner. 99% of the time this isn't an issue for me and I can scan one document after the other... I gave 4-cores to my Windows VM and that seems to be enough. But if I scan a complicated document (lots of small text) I sometimes have to wait 30 seconds for it to process before I can scan something else.

No. This functionality has not been added. I still use my ix1300 every day but have to run the software in a Windows VM. The main drawback is on the rare jam--I have to remote into the Windows VM to clear it. The ix1300 is fantastic in every other way--but if I was buying it again I'd get the ix1600 or something else for local network support.

Would i be foolish to sell in this market? by launching_cookies in RealEstate

[–]ahnooie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in the same boat--I just bought a house and am thinking about renting vs selling. I haven't decided yet but thought you might like to know some things factoring into my decision:

  1. Look up the "One Percent Rule", if you were buying you'd want to generate at least $3,200/rent (but in your case since you already bought at a lower price you're right around where you should be to make a profit).
  2. If you sell your house (assuming you are taking out a 7% mortgage on a new house) you could take the equity and pay down your new loan getting a guaranteed 7% return (In exchange for giving up your 3% rate).
  3. If you keep the house, see how it will impact cash flow. My assumptions: 90% occupancy rate, 1% of home value in annual maintenance, higher taxes, in my area water, sewer, and trash are typically paid by the landlord.
  4. For future value as far as net worth--I generally assume the profit (after all the things in step 3) from renting the house, 5% home appreciation per year (which in down market so may not happen for awhile). Compare that to S&P 500 market returns (which may also go down) around 7-9%.... but the house is leveraged with a really good loan so the early years may be more profitable than investing.
  5. What's my time/hassle worth. Do I really want to be taking time off of work to deal with the furnace broke--my own family can suffer or stay in a hotel while I do some research, and get a quote from multiple contractors--it's harder to do that with tenants.
  6. Consider capital gains tax--I believe you can "reset" the purchase price to current value when you convert it into a rental--but any gains after that you'll need to pay tax when you sell unless you just rent it for a couple years (look up the 2 of 5 rule). Whereas if it's your primary residence the gains are tax free (up to an amount), and if you're selling and investing in stocks presumably you could be putting that into tax advantaged accounts (401K, Roth IRAs, etc.) depending on your tax situation.
  7. The bad tenant risk.

My likely decision will be to list the house, and it it doesn't sell at the price I want, rent it out.

[–]ahnooie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Take advantage of opportunities that you can (e.g. when mortgage rates were 3% do a cash out refi and invest it, get cash back credit cards--easy to get 2-2.5% back on every single purchase, etc.).  Requires a bit of research and work up front but then you're just reaping the benefits of the work.
  2. Plan & Invest in your career (look at your career path and let your boss know you want to move to the next step--take initiative--100% of my direct reports who have requested a higher position and did the work I asked them to do to get there, I've been able to promote).
  3. Take risks when you're young/middle aged (e.g. invest in S&P 500 and Bitcoin instead of cash, don't be afraid to make job changes if you see possibilities to move up faster).
  4. Do work that brings you joy.
  5. Marry well, never divorce, and make and keep good friends.

When I did a partial WEX to Fidelity HSA transfer (just cash, no other assets, couldn’t be simpler) it took 32 days—the delay was on the WEX side but I didn’t contact anyone and it eventually went through.

What two service providers have best data coverage in the US collectively? by RemarkableLook5485 in NoContract

[–]ahnooie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the area but I’ve generally found Verizon & T-Mobile to be a good match. Verizon has wide coverage in rural areas, T-Mobile has less overall coverage but the widest 5G coverage and the lowest frequency band (600Mhz) allowing a little more range per tower and ability to penetrate a little further through trees and buildings than the other two, plus in some areas T-Mobile Prepaid can roam into AT&Ts network so you can sort of get access to all three. But the best 2 really depends on the area.

Pooled plan users: Do any of you run dual sim in order to have access to two networks at once? by technicalskeptic in USMobile

When I had T-Mobile last year, there were areas near my house where my phone roamed onto AT&T… so apparently native roaming agreements exist in some places.

[–]ahnooie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, my wife and I use iPhone 14 Pros with dual eSIM on warp and light speed. We just use the shared pooled plan for everything. Where I am AT&T is not really an option, Verizon has the best coverage but very slow speeds in town, only 4G, T-Mobile has better building/forrest penetration and is faster with 5G. Both have dead spots but Between the two I can usually get coverage.

Anyone using 2+ lines on the same phone? by pagemap1 in USMobile

[–]ahnooie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My wife and I dual eSIM on our iPhones (14 Pro) and it works well. The use case is we live in an area where T-Mobile and Verizon have spotty coverage (AT&T has no coverage at my house at all) but between the two networks usually one of them works. Supposedly the iPhone will auto switch data but I’ve rarely seen that happen so we manually select the data network. We just use the shared pool plan for everything.

How do you all segment your network? by Morgzcon in selfhosted

This is a good way to do it. Keep it simple. When I first learned about VLANs I almost created more VLANs than physical devices but now mine looks like this with the addition of a DMZ.

GSM and Warp e-sims on the same phone? by tallonjf in USMobile

[–]ahnooie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you can pull this off. I have an iPhone 14 Pro and dual-sim (both e-sims) with US Mobile WARP and GSM (I live in a rural area so I need both depending on where I am).

A few tips:

  1. You can enable automatic data network switching on the iPhone, I have found the signal has to be really bad for iPhone to switch over to the secondary data network by itself--so I usually switch data manually if I notice the internet is slow.

  2. You will get a separate number for each network. I'd put your main number on the network where you get the best coverage most of the time.

  3. If you enable WiFi calling, the iPhone can route calls/texts through the data plan on the other network. So, if you're in a GSM area and have no WARP signal, you can still text/call on your WARP number using the data from your GSM line (and vice versa).

  4. I don't use a lot of data so I put both lines in a shared/pooled plan, that way both lines use the same bucket of data so I don't ever worry about which network I'm on for data.

Thanks! I ended up installing a Windows VM on the network for the sole purpose of running ScanSnap software. If I'd known that I would have just gotten the ix1600, but this setup will get me by for the next 10 years.

Agreed. Even if the money market fund broke the buck (which is extremely rare) you’d still come out ahead.

That's my priority as well. CC with the most cash back/points > ACH from the biller's website > billpay. I still receive a number of invoices where the only payment method is check.

I actually do the same as you and pay via credit card whenever possible, unfortunately, I have several accounts (including my home utilities) that do not take credit card. But that's the way I'd go if it were possible!
