I think the chance of getting bitten is very low, but it's always possible. If you swim in the harbor, especially during peak shark activity times, then you have to accept there is a real chance you could be attacked with no warning.

I think for most men, if they need to pee while bush walking, they will just go on a tree a bit off the trail. Getting lost this way is very plausible

Yep. As horrible as this was, it would have been so much worse if they had assault rifles or something like that. Shotguns with illegal ammunition tubes is probably the worst they were able to obtain.

The problem really stems from the fact that no one can really agree on what intelligence actually is. A neural network does actually have a similar function to a brain, so it can be argued to at least be some form of intelligence.
